I looooooved the first generation of the Pursuit. I’ve had the gen 2’s out for ~100 miles of hiking and backpacking in the White Mountains. Unfortunately these fall short of the gen 1s. The toe box seems a little narrower, not a huge issue for me but could be for others. I’m also getting rubbing on my heals, causing open sores. Same size and socks that I had with the gen 1’s, not sure if it’s a different cut, harder heel material, or different internal shape so my heel doesn’t fit as snuggly. For whatever reason they also don’t grip rock as well as the gen 1s. Supposedly same Vibram sole with “improved tread”. Not on rock apparently. Also the new insole and material designed for better drainage and quick drying gets rather loud before it dries out. I’ve never had this issue with another shoe. I still prefer the Pursuits to Altra, Hoka, & Saucony but not as thrilled with this model as the first iteration.
I absolutely love the midsole feel of these! That Zip Foam feels great. I also love the tongue gusset. But I was extremely disappointed in the "wide toe box," or what might better be called the lack thereof. They feel only slightly wider than my Hokas (ATV & Speedgoat). In fact, I even developed a small friction blister on the outside of my large toe, right where the toe interacts with the inside of the shoe. I also developed heel blisters on the first time out for a 4-mile hike in them. I expect that kind of thing in a formal hiking boot that is brand new, but after switching to trail runners as my scramble/hiking shoes over two decades ago now… this is the first time this has ever happened to me. It would have been much more comfortable for my foot to have the heel come up just a touch higher. This is such a bummer. I think they have the potential to live up to the hype, but Vs. 2 blew it for me.
So far they're great. I only have one 20+ miler and two short runs on these, but I'm happy. I've been mostly in Altras for years now and have tried Topos a few times. Previously the Topos were too wide throughout for me and felt sloppy. After Altra kept reducing the toe box volume in their trail shoes (I've been running in Timps & Mt Blancs) I thought I would give Topo another try. The toe box volume feels like what Altra used to. I have an extra unused pair of Altra Timp 5s I'm going to return and buy another pair of these Topo Pursuit 2s! The grip on these feel great. The cushioning is very comfortable. Toe box volume feels like what I used to get from Altra. The skin on my Achilles felt a little raw after my long run but it did not blister. So, I might be having a little heel slip in these.
I'm hiking the PCT this year, and these won over the Altra Lone Peak 9s for my picky feet. I ended up going a full size larger, and they fit wonderfully with thin or thick socks, without feeling too big. Soles are super grippy and flex nicely without compressing my toes or metatarsals, the upper feels nicely ventilated, the laces seem to stay tied without needing to double knot them, the toe box is spacious, and it's possible to buy replacement insoles for them directly from the manufacturer's website (which I discovered Altra doesn't do). I haven't had the heel issues that others have mentioned. So far, so good! I will post an edit after using these on the PCT if my opinion of them changes after using them on the trail.
After 5 days and 50 or so miles these shoes ripped. I bought direct from Topo and due to my vacation & order date I missed the return window. Top doesn’t stand behind the product; they suggested taping these shoes. Do yourself a favor and don’t worry about taping shoes that are 5 days old and about $150. But a different brand.
The features I initially loved about these IE the midfoot secure placement and nice heel cupping were eventually rendered useless by this shoes shoddy, cheap outsole. After a week, the zipfoam turns to marshmallow and leads to terrible instability. Less than 200 miles into my thru hike, the insides of each shoe stress ripped from the slanted/guttered trail I was on. Don’t get me wrong, they feel great and would do very well on frequently traveled less technical terrain, but the cheap squishy outsole will likely fail you in the backcountry. I’ve heard topo merged with a larger company recently and the quality/durability has suffered greatly. Guess I shoulda taken the warning more seriously. Back onto the lone peak bandwagon I go.
I just finished my 200th mile running my favorite trails with these, and I think I've found my go-to shoe moving forward. I ran in the MTN Racer for several years and loved them but I wanted to move to a zero-drop shoe. Enter the Pursuit. I understand that many users of the first generation are upset by their perception of a narrower toe box, and I would agree that the Pursuit feels slightly less roomy than the MTN Racer. Still, I've not experienced any discomfort or issues after 200 miles, and, coming from the Hoka Speedgoat, the toe box is great. Build quality on the Topo's is excellent. I'm always blown away at how long these last and how bullet-proof they've been. I expect these to last comfortably over 400 hard trail miles, which is about twice what I experienced with Hoka.
Pros: - grippy sole - good amount of cushion - durable - quick dry mesh Cons: - insole has a lot of bumps. constricts foot. - heel has no padding and curves inward. Really bad heel blisters.
I really wanted to like these with it being a Colorado company. While these shoes are incredibly comfortable with a roomy toe box, I found them wearing out and falling apart within 200 miles of use. Really disappointing as a lot of people recommend this shoe.
The wider toe box is great for someone who may have wider feet but it may still not be wide enough for some people. The grip is really good and I've had no issues with it The tongue of the shoe is a little stiff at first but will loosen with time and I would recommend re-lacing it to fit your feet better. Overall great shoe but I haven't fully tested it on the trail yet.
