Excellent shorts, Medium waist may want Large size
I have 4 pairs of these, been using for over a year. The chamois on this is definitely better vs their cheaper shorts, which I used to wear. The pockets on the legs are very useful for phone, gel packs, keys, etc. I've also used the small pocket in the back waistband for keys. It's not very large. One comment on size, my waist is 32 but I prefer the large vs the medium because I don't feel any resistance to pedaling with the large. On a medium the fit is tight enough on the legs that I can feel some extra effort required to pedal, not a lot, but some. BTW - I don't have large legs. Recommended
Comfortable on long rides
Big fan of these shorts, bought a second pair after liking the first so much. PROS: - Fit is snug and comfortable - The chamois is MUCH nicer than PI's entry-level shorts (which seem to have gone way down in quality in the last couple years). The cushion is formed with thicker segments under the sit bones and thinner around the edges, so there's less of that diaper effect you get with the cheap ones. - The pockets are great for a phone and a wallet. Nothing has fallen out after a few hundred miles of use. - The sage color is a nice contrast to every other black bike short on the market CONS: - The waist rises a little higher than other bike shorts I'm used to so sometimes it folds over while riding, but that's not a big deal
Pockets handy, waistline could be taller
Postives: side pockets good for phone and wallet, good inseam length Maybes: very thick padding, either good or in the way depending on one's tailfeathers. A bit on the thick side here but... comfy. Negatives; waist line about one inch too low. the back and the sides tend to creep down after a few miles. The 20 year old Pearl Iz's never had that problem. Given the price point, I'd expect a taller waist line.
Great REI shopping experience
I only bought these bike shorts at the suggestion of an REI staff member. It is a better quality product than the one I intended to buy, and was less expensive because it was on sale. The shorts are more comfortable for riding than any I had ever worn. It is always a great shopping experience at REI, like a kid in a candy store.
Love Them!
I just ordered my second pair of these shorts since I really like the first pair. I'm 5'10", weight 150lbs with a 32 waist and ordered a medium which fits perfect. The chamois is a little thick but makes for a very comfortable ride and I also like the longer leg length. I'm not a big fan of stuffing things in my biking shorts so I don't use the pockets. No problem with them not staying up and with any of the grippers. All in all, for the price and fit they are an excellent buy for me at least!
Better than ever.
Much better chamois than my old Pearl Izumi shorts and sizing is consistent. Just ordered a second pair.
Top notch
Waist band and cuffs are very comfortable. Love the pockets on each side though I just realized there is a third on the back. Padding is just right for me. I purchased 1 pair while visiting the Twin Cities REI south. Planning on buying another. I’m 5’ 11" and 190 lbs. purchased size Large.
Disappointed in these PZ Cargo shorts
I've read the reviews and it is like I received an alien product relative to others!? I am typ pleased with Pearl Izumi products and do a lot of long rides on Voler, Castelli, Gore, ... etc shorts, but bought these as a second pair of cargo shorts for my daily 20+ mi commute (Voler Cargo 2.0 bibs are the bomb, BTW!). I gave these shorts two stars only because the pockets are nice and allow me to not always have a pocketed jersey or jacket to still carry my quick access stuff on my commute. The shorts seem sized OK but so not stay up due to the thick chamois and the lack of grips on the high waist portion. The chamois is thick and stiff, a horrid material finish that chafes like no other chamois shorts I have owned. The only solution I have found is to wear some poly Underarmour shorts or similar liner shorts to counteract the friction. Works OK since my commute is short but disappointing for a PZ product. Would not recommend unless my liner shorts hack will work for you and you don't mind pulling the shorts up frequently. They literally catch on my saddle if I don't pull then up before mounting my bike. I am 5'9''; 195 lbs; 34 in waist
Great pair of biking shorts
I always wear Pearl Izumi bike shorts and own many pairs. They are all perfect, fit well, strong material and very comfortable. However, this pair ran small, and I had to size up. Otherwise, perfect.
Good fit for me
Fit was accurate & cushioning was great. I don’t use the small pocket so can’t comment on that I mostly road bike
