For boots: Add one half size to your street shoe size. You should be able to slip one finger behind your heel when you are standing up with the boot unlaced and your toes touching the front. If the boot is too short, your toes will get smashed walking downhill. Too long and your heel will slide up and down and give you blisters.

Weight of a trail runner with the stability of a boot. Great combo. True to size. I had read reviews saying they ran big, bought a half size down and returned them for my true size. So happy with these shoes. Have done several day hikes 6-8 miles of rocky climbs and they have been great. Haven’t carried much weight but have no reason to think they couldn’t handle it.
I was looking for a hiking shoe for the warm summer months as an alternative to my trusty Zamberlan Vios. Love my boots for their rigidity and stability but they are definitely hot and pretty heavy for carrying a light summer day pack. Went to the store and tried on several brands and styles and found that the La Spotiva brand of hikers and approach shoes felt like they had the stiffest soles compared to others my store had on the wall. Still would like to try on some of the Zamberlan low cut shoes but was not able to as they arent stocked at my store. I couldnt find a shoe in stock that would work for me as I wear a 13 and a half in the La Sportivas but found these online and took a chance. I knew I could send them back with REI's awesome return policy. The fit felt good and the shoes felt stiff enough so I decided to put them to the test. Had them a week and have done about 10 miles in them ranging from docile mountain trails to a scramble up past 12000ft this past weekend through snow fields and loose rock, stream crossings and even a nice hail storm. Im pretty impressed with them. If I were going to be loading up more than 10 pounds on my back I might go for my trusted boots but these are feeling really good for summer day hikes..nice and light, cool on my feet, fairly stiff, good grip from the Vibrim soles, and nice and dry through shallow crossings and wet grass.
I got these before starting several summer camp/hike trips. These are super comfy for me, even for long (8 mile) hikes. We did some tricky scrambling on rock walls around streams and falls, and I've never felt more secure. The sticky rubber and big lugs are just right. We hiked in hot and cold weather and these shoes struck the balance for everything. They are NOT waterproof. Dip your toe in a puddle and they'll keep the water out, but in a sustained drizzel, the eventually soaks through. I suspect gore-tex slows but does not stop water. I am not marking it down for this; I never expected these to stay dry through a long wetting. These run a bit big for La Sportiva. I wear EU43-43.5 in La Sportiva climbing shoes (I don't wear climbers very tight), 43.5 in La Sportiva approach shoes, and EU44 in La Sportiva trail runners. I ended up with EU43 in the TX Hike, and they still feel roomy.
This is my second pair of La Sportiva hike and approach shoes. This GTX model is waterproof which is a great feature. Excellent sole and solid toe band. The fit for me (size 13/EU47) was perfect. I am hard on my footwear; used for disc golf, hiking and mountain biking. These shoes are durable, comfortable, fairly cool and perform above expectations.
Feel great from heal strike through toe push. Light. Become even more comfortable over time. Fit perfectly and encourage me to stay on my feet and keep moving.
