Incredibly poor construction and durability
Do not waste your money unless you get then on a huge discount. The durability of these shoes is a joke. They fall apart within a few hikes/climbs. That includes both the sole of the shoe and the upper part. They do have good grip, I would just like them to last more than 5 outings for the price before I consider putting them in the stash. This is for the leather version, not sure if the non-leather version suffers from the same issue. The TX4 might not have the same accuracy for climbing but can still climb well and will last you a whole lot longer.
Poor quality and not durable.
The soles detached, shoe laces broke and interior liner wore through within a month. I sent the shoes back to La Sportiva for warranty replacement which they honored but sent me Guide TX rather than Guide Leather shoes but ok. 6 months later the replacement shoes have hole in the uppers next to the rand. So I got 7 months out of two pair of TX Guide shoes, I usually get 18 months out of a pair of Scarpa Zen Pros.
Four pair in four years.
I've been running the TX Guide up and down the Grand Teton for years. In fact I suspect that I'm on my 4th(?) pair. Personally I love the fit, which is snug enough that most mornings at the climbing gym I climb in these, without switching to my actual climbing shoes. However they are also comfortable enough to solo the Upper Exum and Middle Teton in a day. I generally expect a dedicated approach shoe, that sees a lot of rugged mileage each summer, to only last one or maybe 1.5 seasons. Go take any show into the Tetons or around the WURL and it's going to take some serious wear. My solution is to always keep one extra new pair ready to pull out of the box. They're great.
One of the Best Approach Shoes Out There
You can tell there was ton of thought behind the design of these shoes. Definitely my go-to approach shoe alongside my beloved TX4 Mid's! I mostly romp around in desert environments, so I really appreciate the leather that helps keep sand and cacti out. These feel super rugged and durable, so I expect them to last quite a while. It's almost unbelievable how light these shoes are given how supportive they feel! The climbing zone up front feels super sticky even on wet rock. The laces go all the way to your toes so you can get a super custom fit, which is quite nice. The padded tongue is very comfortable - kind of reminds me of the cushy tongue on Katana Laces. These are basically technical climbing shoes that you can hike around in - I'm super impressed. I'm not much of a climb-some-pitches-in-approach-shoes- type climber, but you sure could be that person in these. My sizing note: I always size 1/2 size up in La Sportiva approach shoes. (Street 8.5W/40, but I wear 40.5 for a comfortable fit)
Love these ,
I work in the protective field with clients that change their minds from one minute to the next Re: location , outings and so on , these shoes/boot adapt to any situation!! I own 3-4 different styles of tactical boots , these are my go to . I saw the other post with a hole in the front of the shoe /boot I do not believe that he has the same boots , they do not come in that color and the lacing is not correct. Well worth the purchase true to size not clunky like other tac boots .. I just wish they came in black like the rest of my tac boots lol …..
Poor quality.
After 2 moderate hikes, on basic terrain maybe 8 miles, the rubber outsole on heal is delaminating. Second pair of sportiva in a row to fail quickly, I love how both shoes fit but I just can't justify spending $$$ with this brand anymore
Narrow!
For reference, I measure 9.5 on the brannock and wear a size 10 in anything Nike; the Scarpa Crux approach shoe fits me perfectly in a size 42.5. The idea of a well-made close fitting combination hiking and climbing shoe was the big attraction for me, but the bottom line is this shoe is too narrow for me - bone-crunchingly so, even with thin running socks and trying both the 42.5 and the 43. Really like the concept of this shoe, features and construction but had to return them.
Poor. Just poor .
Poor construction toe sole separating from upper . Great grip and comfortable shoe to wear in their defense but don't expect to last long
A purchase that makes you feel good!
You know those purchases that afterward, you just are so happy that you did it, so happy that you found an item that actually improves your life? Well, these were one of those purchases for me. I absolutely love these shoes! They hike well, climb well and bike well. For reference, I wear a 42.5 in Mythos, a 43 in TC Pros, and have a wide foot. In these I am wearing a 43, and with the extra laces near the toe, I don't feel like my wide foot is being crushed. It also allows me to adjust the toe box for more aggressive climbing capability vs lighter trail days.
Great All Around but Run Small
Great for Guiding, Easy Scrambling , Warm and even for HBR. Runs pretty small tho, so get 1+ Size. Recommend having this on the narrow smaller size and the TX4 on the comfier side for Guides in the Field
