Great Midlayer / Jacket
Love the product. I picked up a “Large” as I knew I was planning to use this a large a midlayer so did not want it too bulky as I would be wearing a shell on top. Sleeves are slim, but again, I didn’t want something too loose so for my purposes, this is great. Fleece is warm and almost making me think that I may not need an outer shell if where I’m going is not going to rain or be too windy. Outer material seems to be durable but using as a midlayer, I wouldn’t have to worry about it anyhow. Hood seems nice and warm, but we’ll see how it performs once I get to use this more. Wish there were more color ways, but the blue w/ orange pocket isn’t too bad. This would be a great jacket for going around town as well, when it may be a bit chilly and to used as a single outer layer. Again, I believe it may be warm enough to just wear a t-shirt underneath but when you get the sub 40s, would act as a great midlayer. I do wish that the zippers were a bit more “higher quality” with larger/thicker pull chords, but it really not that big of a deal. What would also be nice would be weather sealed/taped zippers for front, and pockets. That would just make the product seem more “premium”. But it is Patagonia, so you know that it’s a pretty good product to begin with.
Many Pros but one Big Con
Pros: -Great material-seemed to be relatively durable and shed water well, I would trust it in the field -Soft and relatively warm for it's purpose -STRETCHY for range of movement -Sleeves are the perfect length -Zipped up collar height was a surprise positive and comfortable too -Warmth to weight ratio was pretty good - felt warm enough while inactive down to about 45F -Face fabric relatively quite, not too swchishy -Hand and drop pockets are made with stretchy material which was a nice surprise Some background before the cons: I'm 6' 0", 180lbs, 45in chest, long arms, athletic build, w/ slight dad bod that comes and goes. There are a number of outwear brands that fit me exceptionally well. Patagonia is not really one of them. I own one Micro Puff jacket that fits OK and somewhat similar to The R2 TechFace. The other jacket I purchased is the Marco Puff which fit similarly but I returned that one. I work out in the Intercontientital Rocky Mountains often outdoors at high elevations. I really wanted this garment to fit and work for me. Cons -The jacket is too long on the torso. It went down near my groin. Not a huge negative here, but is too long as a mid layer. -There is an internal seam that is a bit obtuse throughout parts of the garment. These seams are a minor annoyance when putting it on. I would just hate these seams to be under backpack straps and become a pressure or rub point. This is really a minor annoyance and not part of my reduction of rating starts. -Finally, and the main reason for the reduction in two starts, is the fit. For me it is very hard to call the fit of the garment "slim". I purchased a large. Using the sizing guide I chose the large as the best option for my sizes. Doesn't seem like other sizes will work based on the dimensions provided. Patagonia jackets are only slim in my forearms, leaving little room for a base layer. Beyond that there was too much room in the chest, and torso. I read a considerable number of reviews from others my size that reported the same faults in fit as I found. So much extra room that when I sit down the bunching in the torso area that occurs, due to the zipper, was more than any other mid layer I have ever worn. The reason I docked the jacket two stars is because I know there are other mid-layer jackets that serve the exact same purpose, manufactured by other brands that look just a good, weigh less, cost less, with same or better durability, that fit better than this jacket. Outside of the rather poor fit there are a considerable number of positive aspects about this jacket that make me wish this jacket worked for me, but unfortunately it didn't work for me. I had to return the jacket.
Great product, with one recommendation
The craftsmanship that you expect from Pata-Gucci is as expected. Very warm, actually warmer than I expected it to be. My only concern would be durability in the elbows and forearms. I'd like to see Cordura or similar enforcements in these areas. Outside of that, great product. Buy with confidence!
comfortable, except scratchy collar
I really like this jacket, except the collar. I need to wear a turtleneck inside this jacket, but I really don't like turtlenecks. Everything else is perfect.
Perfect sweatshirt
Perfect for all day activities, love the extra long sleeves. Best “sweatshirt” I’ve ever owned.
My son has been now living in this hoodie
It replaced his previous Patagonia hoodie. Great quality and it looks good, too
