I really, really wanted to like this shoe as the 'non-pro' version was good for me but just not durable enough. Similar to the previous review, my soles started to delaminate on a very limited number of miles. I reached out to Topo directly and they have apparently never seen this defect before and have no inventory to replace directly. Buyer beware!
A very different shoe from the Ultraventure (of which I'm on my third pair and love almost unconditionally). The Pros are *very* stiff (yes, they have a rockplate). They do have better lugging and traction than the Ultraventure and are really quite good in mud and snow but, IMHO, are almost more like a "hiking-boot-lite" than a trail running shoe. I run long/ultra distances and they are too firm and unforgiving for that kind of distance. Also, with only about 15 miles on them the outer layer of outsole/lugging started separating from the first layer of outsole on one of the shoes. Unsure at this point if they're a keeper. I know others have loved them but the jury is still out here ...
I am in love with this shoe. After trying 4 different shoes (and suffering foot pains and blisters) while on the PCT, I finally landed on this one and it is perfect. They give you the Altra shape (wide toe box) but with more support. No foot pain, no blisters. They lasted me over 500 miles at a time on the trail. Now that I've been off trail, I find that I just keep wearing them because they're so comfortable. I should also add that I am a woman with a somewhat wide foot, and this male's version fits me perfectly. I am normally a woman's 9, so I guess I sized up a little in getting a men's 9 but that's what fits.
Disappointed with these shoes. Everything about them was great before the outsole started delaminating from the shoe (as others have mentioned in prior reviews). They were probably the best trail running shoes I have worn in terms of stability and comfort over long distances but the durability is absolute garbage. I purchased another pair from another vendor (REI was out of stock in my size) and the exact same issue happened within a week of use. This is absolutely absurd for such an expensive and hyped up shoe from a reputable brand. I emailed Topo's customer service with the issue I found in both shoes and a link to this page describing the reproducible issue so we'll see what they say about it. Don't buy these because the outsole will fall apart essentially $140 shoes that can't last more than a week of their intended used.
I loved these at first. They are super comfortable shoes. I love the wide toe box and great cushioning. However, after about two months of wear the heels have pretty much fallen apart. I wrote to the company and there is nothing they will do after the 30 days warranty has expired. It makes me feel super frustrated when I splurged on $150 dollar shoes and they fell apart almost immediately. The company claims that they are for thru hikes??? Hahaha. You can't even cross the state with these shoes. They are going in the garbage.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail in '21, and these shoes saved my feet. I can't speak to trail running, but for long distance or thruhiking, these are absolutely the best shoe I've tried. La Sportiva's destroyed my feet, and Altra's offered no arch support. These shoes swooped in and saved my hike. There is a bit of heel slippage, but once I learned how to knot my laces correctly for the issue, that problem was gone for good. I cannot express how much I love these shoes in any finer detail than this.
Long time Topo customer, primarily trail shoes of every model. Have had well over ten pairs of Topos by now. The Ultravenure Pro is my current favorite trail runner. Have run many races and routes from every distance to well over 50 miles in these shoes. Primarily mountain trail running. Currently have over 500 miles on them and they still look in excellent shape. Going on my second pair now as the cushion is finally starting to fade and I can feel the earth a bit too much on a hard run. I haven't experienced any delamination issues or any tearing in the upper like other reviewers have. Highly recommend this or any Topo shoe as every future model seems to improve dramatically over it's predecessor.
Had high hopes for these but they failed to meet them. I thru-hike and typically use the Terraventure 2. Works ok, but I needed a little more support, thus, the Ultraventure Pro. I like the sole, stiffer with more support, but the upper is just fabric over the top, no support provided leaving your foot slopping around in the toe box. Additionally, the fabric crimps when you step and your foot bends causing pressure points. Very disappointed. The sole is great but the upper ruins the shoe. Topo would have done better by giving it an upper like the Terraventure and keeping the sole. This would have made it an awesome thru-hiking shoe. For now, I will stick with my Terraventure.
I tried the switch to full zero drop last year with some Altra Lone Peaks for long trail running and hikes. While those shoes were comfortable in the moment, my ankles and Achilles really did not do well with them. So, on to Topo, which has the nice wide foot shape of the Altras with some more stability and 5mm of drop. I tried on both the regular Ultraventure and the Pro model and found the pro more comfortable and liked the beefier toe-cap and rock plate. I hiked a whole bunch of miles last month in the Utah national parks with zero foot issues. As a bonus, the mesh on these is pretty fine and even without gaiters did a very good job keeping sand out of the shoes. The one thing I haven't tried yet is running (still restricted to flat surfaces due to the ankle issues), but I am very comfortable recommending for long hikes.
I’m writing this mostly in response to the many negative reviews this shoe has garnered. I had been hesitant to try this version because of them and stocked up on 3 last pairs of Ultraventure v1s that somehow became available in REI even after the v2 was released. With only one pair of v1 left in my stock pile I needed to take a shot at these Pros and I’m pleasantly surprised. The toe box is as wide as the UV v1 and the minimal overlays actually make for a more comfortable forefoot fit. The midsole zip foam is softer than the EVA of the UV v1 without being at all spongy, part of this may also be the addition of the rock plate. Full disclosure on lacing: I skip the lower eyelet sets by the gaiter hook which provides some more toe box room while allowing enough lacing for a runners loop at the upper most eyelets. This locks down the mid foot and heel well for me for both the UV v1 and this Pro version-no heel movement what so ever. I ran the UV v1 during this summers San Juan Solstice 50 miler and based on how well they did and how these pros compare so far over the same rocky and technical trails I run on out here in western CO I’m confident these are a good replacement. They handle well on techie downhills, are smooth on flats and the outsole climbs better than the UV v1. They do feel a tad stiff at first but break in after about 10-20 miles, similar to the old Salomon SLabs circa 2011 which were bomb proof once broken in and lasted forever. Hope this adds some perspective to this shoe’s review.
