Good feature, useless documentation

I got the Garmin “smart watch” for Christmas. I’ve now had it for a month and am beginning to understand how to use a few of its basic features. I’m an old white guy who is old-time techie (not so much into social media, tweets and the like). The watch itself rates 4 stars but the documentation drops it at least a star. If you cannot use it then it's not worth much. It is hard for me to understand how a company can put so much expense and effort into creating a consumer product and then do such a horrendous job explaining how to use it! After opening the box I read the Quick Start Manual, a small 2” by 5”, 7 page document. The instructions did not indicate whether or not the watch had to be charged first. Pressing the “action button A” to turn on the device did nothing so I plugged it in to charge as I assumed that was the problem. Immediately a triangle appeared. What did that mean? Who knows? Nothing in the document would indicate what any of the many icons mean. After a while I tried button A again and a watch face momentarily appeared. If you move your arm like you want to see the time the watch face comes alive. Scrolling up on the watch face with a finger shows “My Day” and four icons and numbers. The footsteps icon is obvious. The others, not so much. What does a clock icon followed by the number 109 have to do with my day? Another scroll up with a finger and four more icons and numbers appear. The heart icon I guessed is heartbeat. I downloaded the 28 page pdf file hoping that would have better instructions. Sorry, still no illustration or explanation of the icons on the 2 screens I mentioned previously. At this point I was going to return the frustration producing device but decided to give youtube a shot. Success, I found a fairly good tutorial but sadly some of the screens in the tutorial did not match what I saw when I gave the same action as the youtube user. I eventually learned how to track my vitals and route when hiking and biking. The data provided is amazing. The fact that it uses GPS technology means that more accurate data can be collected than via my old Fitbit. I like that it produces a track I can see on a Google map on my phone via the Garmin app I installed. I still don’t understand what some of the data or icons mean. For example, I have yet to figure out if my “Body Battery” is showing me a good or bad number. Or what does the icon that looks like fire indicate? At this point I figured out enough to decide to keep, and use, the Venu Sq. Garmin, if you are listening, please create a video tutorial with a table of contents that links to the listed topics so a customer can understand and see how to access and use the many features included in the Venu Sq. I think it has the potential to be a very good product by people other than those who designed it.

Pretty but terrible app

I went from a Fitbit to the Garmin Venu. I like the square and it was the only Garmin that offered it. My inspire didn't have much info when I ran and it was hard to read. The Garmin app is terrible. It's confusing and I feel overwhelmed with information. I do not think the information is very accurate or useful. It can be fun to look at, but there are too many things that it doesn't offer. Fitbit considers an active zone/intensity minute of 60 seconds or more elevated Heart rate. Venu is only 10+ minutes. So if you run a 9 minute mile, Venu doesn't count it (Forerunner will). The Fitbit GPS is just as good as the Garmin. Garmin's are overrated.

Wasted Screen Space

Overall, I like the Venu SP. The battery life is great. It feels good on my wrist, and the software on my phone is very good. However, it has a couple big flaws. First, the big square display is a waste. All the watch faces are circles. So about 50% of the face is non-functional. As a result, the font and prompts are very small and hard for people with middle aged eyes to read. Additionally, the watch software and button flow is not always intuitive. This is why I have it 3 stars. Overall, I put it on par with my last watch, the Fitbit Versa 2. Hopefully, the Venu SP last more than 15 months before it breaks.

Not super user friendly

I just bought this and I’m not in love. It says it’s compatible with my phone and IOS and yet I receive all notifications, but text. I have reviewed settings and everything is on, but not receiving text. I’m not a huge fan that I have to scroll to get to what widget I want to see instead of having a menu or icons to access what I would like. It also lags a little bit to touch, I feel like it doesn’t respond very well when I scroll. The app for the Garmin also just looks outdated and all the watch faces are either too childish or manly or way too girly. I can’t really find anything modern and bold. I will be returning and going back to Apple Watch.

Not User Friendly (For Me)

After over an hour of trying to set up the Venu Sq, it was still confusing to me how to access the information I wanted to view. (I admit I am not a tech wizard.) I primarily wanted a simple device that tracked steps, heart-rate, and O2 level so that I could readily and easily view this information. Perhaps the Venue Sq does this, but I couldn't get the device to do it, and had to go to my phone to look at the app to get the information. The additional features offered by the watch weren't a priority for me. In addition, I found the watch band to be difficult to put on (mostly difficult to get the band to tuck inside the buckle). I

Nice with all the bells and whistles I need

Why the new watch: I do beat up my watches. I had to replace my Forerunner 35 twice, first because the buttons stopped working, secondly because the glass sits higher than the rim of the watch case. I do a lot of manual work and although I had a glass protector, the glass slowly got chipped on the sides until I couldn't read anything. Unfortunately, the design is the same on this Venu Sq. Why?! I managed to buy a big rubber transparent cover for it, that snaps over the watch. Should help. See pictures. You can easily access the buttons and I hardly notice it. What I also don't like is, that to save battery (I get it), the display switches off. I'm hoping that there's a way to turn that off but I haven't had the time to check it out. Otherwise, I like that I can still download an analog face, it gives me GPS and HR. I track all my walks and hikes (maps) and this is wonderful. I do like the option to chose activity type since I bike sometimes. I've also been trying to keep my HR low and this helps me track it without logging on. I appreciate the reasonable price on this one and it still has so many great features that I can access with Connect. I would recommend this watch. Please consider making an S model for us with tiny wrists for when I will have to replace this one :)

Adaptive brightness only. Too dim in low light

Functional watch, but the brightness settings kill it for me. Brightness settings are Low, Med, High. However each one is adaptive brightness. Adaptive brightness should be an option, not mandatory. I struggle to read the screen in low light situations since it brings the brightness of the screen down so much (even on the High setting). If this makes it back to Garmin, this needs to be addressed in a software update. There are forum entries about this for over a year now and still nothing has been done to address it. I don't use adaptive brightness on my phone for the same reason, don't force it onto my watch. Currently unhappy about my purchase.

Nice Venu Sq but.....

I do like the Venu Sq but I find it way too hard to figure out and get it set up. I got this for a Christmas present and as of today 1/16/22 I still have issues with it. I do not have the one with music and which is fine with me. Its all the other stuff 0 GPS is a pain. I am not a runner but just walk, ride my bike/stationary bike, do chair exercise too.The one feature I do like is I can keep great track of my water intake - Thank goodness some very kind people on FB groups have helped me with many issues. Be prepared cause it will give the real steps - still wear my other one for insurance reasons to get the steps I have to do.

Exactly what I wanted and better than expected

I wanted a watch that I could wear while training for a triathlon, and so far this one has been great. I have small wrists and have always hesitated to get a smart watch because I always thought they would be really bulky and award on me, but this one is the perfect size. It's not too big on me but it's big enough to easily read and navigate the menu. I didn't expect to want to wear it ALL the time, but I do because I love the step counter and the sleep monitoring, which wasn't what I got it for, but I use those features now. Sometimes I track how much water I drink, and that's been helpful. I've been super happy with this purchase!

Perfect Watch for Me

I purchased my Venu Sq a couple of weeks ago, and so far I am really happy with it. The only thing I wish would have been better, would be for this particular model be in a different color other than white. I did purchase a different color of band as white is hard to keep clean. It is really a great watch for me and is really easy to use, I love the touch screen and the easy process to start the tracking for activities. It has a great size screen and easy to read, and getting my text messages that are readible is great. I had a Vivosmart 4, which the band broke on and could not be replaced, this Venu Sq is such a step up.

Exceeds expectations

I've had my Garmin Sq for eight months and wear it continuously. I use it primarily for steps and have synced it to a My Fitness Pal to monitor my nutrition. I have the Connect app on both my phone and my tablet (and that's where my nutrition app is located). Occasionally I have trouble syncing to the tablet; twice I've had to uninstall and reinstall the app. Once I lost Bluetooth function on the Garmin and went online for instruction. Overall, however, I am happy with the Garmin Sq and it's uses. I use the alarm function often and like the variety of exercises available. The only one lacking that was on my old Fitbit is Hiking.
