Gradual rediction in quality and materials
I have been wearing these for 20 years and sadly they have been declining in quality and durability and now the rubber soles seperate from the upper at the toe, (my last 3 pair) the leather is thinner and the padding wears much more quickly, it is sad that the quality has been reduced while the price has increased. Please stop walmarting your products !!!
Buyer beware
I bought these to wear in and out of my house. Dispute the light use over the last year, the soles are coming apart. Seems defective, but Merrell has done nothing to honor their product warranties. Be aware if decide to buy this model.
Dressy Slide
I bought these because I needed a shoe that was more dressy than the usual Jungle Moc or Jungle Slide, I'm in love with the style and the comfort.
Great, but not durable compared to prior version
I owned both the original Encore Gust and now the Encore Gust 2 and I am disappointed with the durability of the new design. The original Gust had leather lining on the inner side of the edges and they lasted a long time. The new design has a polyester fabric where the leather used to be and it wore through really quickly. These are comfortable shoes, great design, but for the sake of little bit of extra leather cost they really compromised the durability of the shoe. I hope they start using leather again in their Gust 3 design, otherwise they are not worth the cost.
Inner Heel liner not at all durable
Very comfortable in the wide with, but inner heal padding has already ripped after just a few months of use — very disappointing!!
Less secure fit than prior versions
I have worn Encores for probably 15 years. The Gust 2 fits differently, the footbed is shallower and your heel comes out of the shoe more easily than prior versions. In the past these were perfect travel shoes because they were comfortable, easy to remove (TSA), looked reasonably dressy if you didn't want to be the typical tourist wearing running/training shoes everywhere, and with their grippy soles, were actually pretty good for light hiking on up to moderately rugged trails (Zingaro in Sicily, Formentor in Mallorca, Les Calanques in France). Now the looser fit means hiking is out. I didn't return these but just wearing them in town.
Material differences????
This was the second pair of this same shoe that I’ve ordered in approximately two years. Loved, loved the first pair. I found the second pair to be extremely similar in fit but not in material comfort. The upper, which I believe to be a leather, is much more stiff on initial wear and feels less comfortable. Not bad, just less comfortable. I’ve worn them about a dozen times and I don’t feel any difference in the “stiffness “ of the material. I don’t remember any breaking in time on the first pair. The form of the shoe is so good and I’m hoping the upper will soften , but so far no changes. The first pair was black and the second a brown. Maybe different material???….
A Good Houseshoe for An Older Gentleman
My husband is 81 and needed a new pair of indoor shoes (We do not wear outdoor shoes in our house.). Given his age and energy level (He has lymphoma.), I thought these shoes. Might be a good alternative to the old style indoor shoe he has worn for years. They are easy to put on (no shoe horn needed) and the back of the shoe does not permit his foot from sliding backward as his regular indoor shoes, which is more safe. The soles also provide a firm grip to our hardwood floors. He likes these so well, I purchased a second pair for him to wear outside. BTW: I have worn this style of Merrill’s for years. I don’t know why I never considered recommending this Merrill style for him.

Not skid resistant
The shoes are comfortable. True to size. Leather is soft. They are slipper style which makes them easy to put on and take off and lets your feet vent and stay relaxed. I work in healthcare, particularly operating room. Our rooms are mopped after each procedure. These shoes are dangerous on wet surfaces like linoleum we have. They glide like skates and I almost fell a few times! They would be keepers for life 5 star shoes if the sole was really skid resistant. Redo the sole on this shoe, Merrell, and I’ll be your customer till I’ll retire. Until then 3 stars because of safety concerns.
Super comfortable, but didn’t last
Super comfortable, but didn’t last. I’ve been wearing mine for over a year and the heel insole is coming apart. I really want to buy another pair, but it doesn’t seem economical.
