Don't recommend.

This box installed quickly, but after our first use, there was a lot of water in the bottom of the box. This got several things wet including shoes we had for our trip. Super annoying to shut also, even when empty. I will probably return this when we get back. The outside is so slick, that is is close to impossible to grip when you need to close it when it is wet. To shut the lid, (even when empty) you must climb up on the car and push it down in about 4 places before it will click and lock. The front is especially hard to shut as it is hard to reach from my car. The water in the bottom is frustrating due to our stuff getting wet.

excellent!!

Bought this last year from REI. Wanted to wait to do a full year review. Have used it to take beach stuff to the jersey shore and OBX. Used it up in Vermont for snowboarding too. Is everything I wanted in a cargo box and has held up great. I have a 2018 cross trek and although I got the larger one (it was the only size they had in stock at the time) it still looked and drove great. Fits the evo bars perfectly.

18 grand tour

The look of this box is great. I compare this to skybox and lower and more stylish however when watching a video of how the box function falls short. Compare to the skybox 18 opening lid is a hassle need to hands also to close unlike the video where the lids shuts by itself it catches on the end when means you have to use both hands and press it down hard to lock it. Unlike skybox easy to close. However the room inside works great it’s flat unlike skybox where at the end it’s tapered go anything long like 84 inches will get caught at the end where the grand it’s all flat which means better space design. For 100 more it’s just a box box minus opening and closing. I do like how you torque it down to install as well leaves more room. You just have to compare both have cons and pros. Hope this helps.

Better than the Skybox!

I had a Skybox 16 for 5 years on my Outback. Worked fantastic! I then realized that my new OutBack can accommodate a larger box, so I went with this box over the Thule XXL and the CBX. It is a really nice looking box. Ive had this on my car for the last month, and I don't notice any more road noise than I did before (speed limit here is "80 mph"). Yes the box weighs 15 +/- more than the box I replaced it with, but I am gaining 10 inches in length, an inch in width and 2 inches in height. The locking system I can see where some folks have had some issues. There is no lip, or hand holds if you will, to pull down on. I simply just put my hands on both ends of the box and close it. However it is much smoother than the Skybox. Also the track system they use is MUCH easier to tighten (comes with a hex tool instead of using your hands as a tool).

Nice looking, poor performance

This roof box is very hard to close. Either the front or rear latch requires a lot of pressure (happens on both sides) and the box doesn’t have any grip area to pull it closed. You end up leaning over the vehicle trying to figure out which latch isn’t closed, because they all look closed. I’m going to return the box and get a Thule instead. It is easy to install and quite quiet at highway speed. The shape is a little awkward, best for skis but not for bulky camping gear.

Most stupid piece of junk

This thing, in fact, has a lot of nice features. The packing volume is substantial, it is aerodynamic, looks nice, and easily mounts on the roof of a car or SUV (you need crossbars for that). This all is good except for one feature which pretty much nullifies everything else. When mounted on the roof of an SUV and packed, it is extremely difficult to lock. Basically next to impossible, especially when the surface is wet after the rain. It looks closed and feels locked so that you cannot lift the lid unless you turn the opening lever. Yet it is not fully locked due to some reason, and then you cannot turn the lever completely into the locked position and pull out the key. To lock it completely, you need to press extremely hard at several locations or literally pound full force with a fist. And do not take it lightly — I am a man 6'1" 190 pounds. The engineers who designed this stupid locking system are complete idiots who need to be fired and never let close to this type of products again. And the company needs to redesign its locks so that they would be at least reasonably easy to operate.

Beautiful but Impractical

I was initially drawn to the high gloss automotive black and chrome finished Yakima badge - it gives off high end aesthetics with it's sleek lines. I also appreciate how smooth the action is to open and close the cargo box, especially when compared to other roofttop boxes - its capable of opening from either side of the car as well. Thanks to the three extra spines on the lid and two metal brackets on each end of the box. I removed a star for the sheer weight of the box, being heavier than most 18 cu ft boxes, which then lessons the amount of weight in cargo you can carry - because every car has a rooftop weight limit; the more the box weighs, the less cargo you can carry, regardless of the cu ft of space you have. I removed another star due to its limited tolerances. This track the clamps rest on, has a limit that doesn't allow me to seat the box as far back on my roof as I need, making the front end of the box jut out way, wayyy too far past the front crossbars, which then creates instability of the box at highway speeds. I removed another star because this also leads to excessive noise and shaking of the box when travelling at highway speeds. This also may lead to a decreased longevity of the box life, and wondering what damage it's doing to my cars factory front crossbars, as its violently vibrating up and down, hundreds to thousands of times in a given trip. Wish I could return it, as I am not even 50% satisfied, but I bought it at a garage sale... I wouldn't recommend this model to anyone.
