Great 1st impressions
Got the pump in mail and immediately put 2 new batteries in it to test the pump out on a Klymit static V insulated mattress. I put a half breath into the mattress to prime the pad and make sure the valve was open. I then connected the pump and ran the pump for 3 minutes. The mattress wasn’t firm. I wasn’t sure if the pump was going to be strong enough to get the mattress as firm as I like. I finished off the mattress with one breath and closed the valve. It is a luxury item that is going into the pack. The question for the pump now is how long will it last on the same batteries?
Works on Wing Valve Pads
Very slow on 3v, but it's better than fussing with an inflator bag. If you don't mind voiding your warranty... bridging two springs with a wire and soldering a usb-A cable makes it lighter, and able to run off a 5v phone charger. I hate guessing how much juice I have left in regular batteries.
Works well
I got one of these and put two AAA lithium cells in it to use for my WingLock XTherm. (Lithium cells cost about the same per energy delivered as alkaline cells, but (a) weigh about a third of the power-delivered equivalent number of alkalines, (b) work better in the cold, and (c) don't leak and corrode the insides of your gear. I gave up on alkalines and only use disposable lithiums, with adapters to fit equipment designed for C and D cells.) Lithiums have a slightly higher voltage than alkalines, so this may affect my measurements. I found it took 5-6 minutes to inflate my large XTherm, and less than 2 minutes to deflate to where I could easily fold it over and roll it up, pressing out the last tiny bit of air. Unless I'm going on a long ultralight backpacking trip, this goes with my XTherm.
Not compatible with most Thermarest pads
Last year I bought a Thermarest Neoair pad and this Neoair micro pump. Yesterday I tried pumping up the pad for the first time. There is no way to get the pump to mate with the valve. Same problem for the other four Thermarest pads I own. Today I read that the pump is only for 2020 and newer pads with a different valve. How could that make a pump that is not compatible with the millions of pads they already have out there? It would have been easy to make an inexpensive silicone adapter, but no.
Love this on my thru hike!!!
Love this on my thru hike. I did half the PCT last year and there were times at night I would just sit in my tent and dread blowing up my mat - sometimes putting off much needed sleep. I’m back on trail trying to finish the PCT but this time I brought this pump. I LOVE IT!!! It blow up the mat in a couple of minutes while I do other things. It doesn’t blow it up perfectly firm but that’s fine. I finish it off with 2-3 breaths - way better than the 50+ it takes without the pump. I shortened my mat (which kills the warranty) and saved nearly the same number of grams as the pump ways, so I really came out about even. I put batteries in my resupply boxes so I’ve yet to run out of juice. I use the pump every night to fully inflate the mat (regular size thermarest shortened to about 58 inches) and each morning to suck just the little bit of extra air that doesn’t come out when I roll it up. The batteries have lasted at least ten days. In short, I think this pump is worth every penny and every gram. Now if we could just convince thermarest to sell mats in more female friendly lengths...
Micro Pump or Pump Sack 🤷♂️
I purchased this after seeing several gear reviews on Youtube and was excited about something small to bring so I wouldn't have to fool around with a pump-sack. I've used this a few times and the main thing I think is it should be faster. I guess if you get into camp there's not much else to do but wait for your air mattress to get pumped up, but the pump doesn't stick to the valve so I have to sit and hold them together to keep a good seal. Not sure if it's worth the extra weight over a pump sack as I think I can actually go faster with the pump sack.
Great Idea but needs Improvement
I was really excited about this new mirco pump and trying it out on the new NeoAair Uberlite Sleeping Pad. Since being in house arrest I had time to test it. Well It was disappointing to say the least, the new AA batteries only lasted for one inflate and deflate. It took four minutes to inflate it but it was only 90% inflated. Using the pump sack that came with my sleeping pad, I was able to inflate the pad in 3:18.2 minutes with nine pumps. I am going to return this item and just use the pump sack. If you want to use this mircro pump, then get rechargeable batteries for the trail.
Time Savings
This is one of my luxury items on the trail. I backpack with my kids and need to inflate multiple sleeping pads. I let the pump do all the work while I set up the tent. I've used it many times and have not had an issue with the battery contact. However, I think it would be really nice if it didn't use AAA batteries, but rather a USB rechargeable battery.
battery life
We used the first version of this product during the majority of our Triple Crown, it was great. If this new version is like the previous one, strongly suggest using energizer lithium AAA batteries. Greatly extends the battery life and also they weigh much less as a Percentage of weight vs. an alkaline battery.
Not worth the price
Really let down with this, this is almost 25% of the cost of a pad and it's now just a useless paperweight for me. Takes more than 10 minutes to inflate my xtherm up just enough to hold a shape, not enough static pressure on the fan to pump it up more than that. Purchased it for deep winter hiking and reducing the latent air within my sleeping pad but this just doesn't work anywhere near well enough to warrant bringing on a trip. On a silver lining; the inflation bags included with my xtherm is fantastic. Wish I wouldn't have bought the pump and pad together cos I would've realized the air bag works good enough.
