Love it so far!

It looks great on our vehicle, packs a lot of stuff, and our gas mileage hasn't decreased at all. It fits quite a bit of stuff, opens from both sides, and the gloss black finish looks nice! I was worried it would get scratched up compared to the Skybox finish, but it still looks good after multiple road trips. With more kids, I will need to upgrade to the 18 for more room to fit gear, but for now this one works great for my wife, daughter and me.

Lots of space, not weather-tight!

This is the first roof box I've ever owned or used. I installed it on a 2021 Outback, it looks great on it. Overall I'm happy with it. It adds a huge amount of cargo space- more than I was expecting. Will be great for road trips for our growing family. Opening height wise it fits a large 95L Osprey duffel packed to the gills. The locking and opening mechanism is easy to use and inspires confidence. Installation was really easy. The torque knob setup is really well thought out and works well. Installed for the first time in the parking lot at REI and it was less than 15 minutes. The negative for me, and maybe my expectation was a little high given the price, but it's definitely not weather-tight. On our first road trip with it, half was through bug-central and the other half was on/off rain. Well, the box splatted a whole lot of bugs as expected but also found a lot inside the box when I went to unload, including a couple decent sized honey bees. And after the rain portion, there were some puddles inside and the pack I had near the front of the box was wet. Not drenched, not a ton of water, but don't trust it with your sleeping bag! This is not the end of the world for me, just have to consider it when loading up the vehicle. But I was expecting a little better on that front.

Nice fit, five minute installation

Grand Tour 16 by Yakima. Easier than expected to install but honestly - two people are necessary to lift it onto the racks. REI Ann Arbor was kind enough to help with this the first time. Once it's up there all adjustments can be done by one person. A portable step will help with this process. No need to look for a second star wrench because the [square] end wrench (with hand wheel attached) does everything you need to mount the Yakima G.T. 16 to the racks/ vehicle. All square end screws should/ must be loosened before loading it on top of your racks/ vehicle. Then you just slide the attachments into position and tighten until you hear the audible click. This 16 cu. ft. of additional space will really expand our cargo space in our '21 Crosstrek Limited. Our vintage Yakima Low Rider Towers and old style round Yakima bars fit perfectly into the attachment clips.

Worth the expense

Bought this on sale for use with my Chevy Bolt EUV and rented Tesla Ys for longer road trips. With all the options, I made a spreadsheet to help compare the features of ~10 Thule and Yakima boxes. The key/latch mechanisms of the lower priced models left me with this GT, CBX, Skybox or the Thule Motion XT. With those options, It came down the flat bottom on the GT. I have had it on the car for a week and just did a ~100 mile camping trip with my partner and our 4 month old. We were able to pack everything we needed in this box and the trunk of our Bolt EUV. The box looks GREAT, which I was not expecting. Our energy efficiency took a hit, still not sure goes bad yet. Somewhere between 10-40% with the box mounted front forward, will do some tests later this year with the more aerodynamic backward mounting.

pony express of carriers

"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays…” I drove through rain, freezing temperatures, desert climate, and this thing did quite well. I drove at high rates of speed and it didn’t act like it was going to fall off. My stuff stayed dry and snug. I like how it allowed my dog and myself more room in the cab of our vehicle to travel well prepared.

Looks great and very little wind noise. Very easy to attach to the roof rack. Love the option of opening from both sides. This makes tightening the clamps to the roof rack very easy. Easy to move to another car.
