Excellent snowshoe but with subpar bindings
This 25" W's snowshoe has excellent traction on packed powder, hard pack, crusty snow and has good float in powder up to at least 18". Stride ergonomics are not 100% but very good. The weight is almost a lb more than MSR Lightnings, but hasn't been an issue for me. The bindings sound simple to use and good, but sadly, they are terrible. They are supposed to work by (1) inserting the toe of the boot under a toe cage that lifts up; (2) pulling two side straps that snug the cage over the boot toe; & 3) inserting the strap ends into clips on the sides of the binding so they don't come undone. The straps have a bulge near the end that is supposed to be at the far end of the clips so they doesn't slip thru. Despite these bindings supposedly fitting up to W's size 11, and me wearing a size 8.5 name brand snowshoe boot from REI, the straps are too short for this to work unless I tighten the bindings so much that the cage grinds into the tops of my feet with each step. With the bindings tightened to a comfortable fit, the bulges are above the clips, so the straps come out of the clips, which means the bindings get loose or just completely come off without warning. Tried moving the clips higher up the straps, but due to non-moveable a plastic part, they have to be so high up the straps that they still don't hold because the bulges aren't positioned right next to the clips. As a last ditch effort to stay with Tubbs Mountaineer, I tried on men's 25". The straps were still too short for the bulges to land below the clips. They weren't. Can't figure out why Tubbs didn't put a better binding, such as BOA, on what is otherwise a stellar snowshoe. If they can put BOA on Flex-Vrt and Panoramic, why not these? Tubbs told me they have longer straps one can swap in, but only for the 30". If you are considering these, suggest trying them on with your boots to make sure that the the bulges on the straps land below the clips without the bindings being pulled so tight that they pinch and grind your feet. Really wanted to keep these because they do a great job in most types of snow conditions we have here. But that's impossible due to the poorly designed binding system.
