Tasty new addition to backpacking dinners!
I added this Spicy Red Bean Chili meal to my dinner menu during a strenuous 5 night Grand Canyon backpacking trek in early October. The dinner was a very tasty and refreshing break from my traditional rice/pasta/foil pack meat based meals. My meal prep was a bit off label, as I boiled 2 cups of water, then thoroughly mixed the boiled water with the Chili mix in a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag (don’t use generic freezer bags for this step). I tucked the freezer bag with the reconstituted mix into a coozie (a homemade envelope constructed of very lightweight insulation material) along with a single-serve foil pack of Spam. After a full 10 minutes, I mixed the warmed Spam with the Chili in the freezer bag, added a dash of hot sauce from a restaurant sized packet, and devoured. The contents were completely rehydrated, and the double serving size is perfect for one person when burning twice the calories on strenuous treks. Great energy, no aftertaste, quick cleanup. A new entrée on the backpacking dinner menu!
Very tasty
I was very satisfied with the flavor of the spicy red bean chili. I’m a fan of spicy and found that it had the right amount of kick and flavor. No gastric issues afterwards. While I know that’s not fun to mention but when backpacking that’s a huge deal. An upset stomach is Not something you want to deal with on a trail. I’d definitely get the Spicy red bean chili again
Hearty vegan chili
I'm not a vegan, but I don't eat a lot of meat and like to mix up my diet. I love chili and this hits that spot in its vegan way. The instructions call for adding the mix to boiling water and continuing to boil for a period of time, so know your cooking cup will be dirty when you're done. If you take the fuel-saving option, be sure to wait at least 10 minutes before eating so the beans and veggies are fully cooked. The flavor is good. It may be too spicy for some but not spicy enough for others. I added a lot of hot sauce to mine. You might consider adding salt, too. One package is 800 kC. I skipped lunch and didn't bring snacks on my 6.5 mile hike, so the whole package made a perfect dinner that night! Caution: it's bean-intensive. Warn your tentmate.
My favorite instant dish
This is excellent chili. The spicy is very spicy which I love. The regular is also very good and flavorful if you prefer less spice and the flavor of the beans etc. And they use excellent ingredients.
Delicious and Filling!
A great light weight meal option for the back country. I took one on a bike packing trip recently and loved it with some pita to dip in. Enough for 1 hungry person or two people if youve got some sides.
Great flavor - needs a little more cooking time
I prepared this one at home, rather than on the road, since it requires a 10-minute simmer. (Which still left the beans undercooked, so I would add another 10 minutes of resting, covered.) Flavor was good - really enhanced by adding cheese, etc., but also great on its own. (I ate the leftovers cold for breakfast the next day, and really enjoyed it.) This was a nice surprise since I didn't have high hopes after my experience with one of the Patagonia grain dishes.
Tasteless yet bitter
Not sure how this chili managed to have seemingly no taste and yet be bitter and gross at the same time. Also took much longer to cook than it says - some of the beans were still crunchy after 20 mins.
Tasty and flavorful
Patagonia has done very well creating a tasty and filling meal. Appropriately spicy- personally I would have preferred a bit more heat but then it would probably be too much for average palate. At 600 calories the meal is average for most bag meals. Would prefer a higher caloric content. Typically I try to find meals in the 800 calorie or greater range.
2 different experiences
So the pouch said there was about 2.5 serving in a bag. I decided to try to split this into two meals since it was just for me. The first time I measure out the half cup but its hard to tell If I'm getting enough of the seasoning or too many beans. I decided to try cooking it by putting it in my hydroflask food container and pouring boiling water in it. I did that and let it sit for about 15 minutes. after that time I tried a bike and noticed the beans were still crunchy. The flavor was bland and I was disappointed. This time I through the rest of the pouch in and left boiling water in the container for about 30 minutes. This was much better and the beans were almost completely re-hydrated. I had a couple crunchy bits but not enough to bother me. Also the flavor was muuuuuch better. I feel like even though there are multiple servings you really cant divide the bag or else the seasoning to bean ratio is off. I really enjoyed the flavor and would purchase this product again.
Perfect end to a great day on the trail
Great spicy chili i made on a trip up Mt Yale last weekend. Followed the instructions and it cooked perfectly the first time. Great flavor and portioning was good for a full meal for me. I will definitely bring this on the trail again.
