How could something that failed get 5 stars?
This lighter/torch is amazing. So is the company that makes it (SOTO- Japan). It performed flawlessly for several months then stopped. But it was so good, I wanted to try again rather than just get a refund from REI (another great company). I used Soto's form to tell them the problem; in ONE day I got a personal reply and an offer to replace it. Cindy said it is a complex mechanism and CAN have problems- but it is so well thought out that I DON'T CARE- I'll try again; they are responsive and willing to make good. I wish I needed a stove or a pot or a spork because they make them too!
Great lighter & mini torch
This isn't just a lighter, it's a mini torch. When stuck out in in below zero temps (used down to -20F) and after getting dunked in a river in the Arctic, this is the only lighter that would work EVERY SINGLE TIME. Admittedly it had to be kept in an inside pocket but it was the only one that worked. This thing is a life saver. Since it's also a torch, it was also effective at melting ice off of snow machine hitches. I bought this to give as gifts for the survival kit for five of my closest friends after experiencing its reliability and usefulness.
Awesome!
I don’t normally write reviews. But with ongoing Covid, I bought a bunch of camping equipment. This lighter is one thing that has stood out among my new gear. It’s an awesome idea. It’s basically a Butane torch adapter for standard lighter. It really only uses Scripto lighters. I live near the pacific coast w lots of wind and a torch type lighter is the only way to go. I thought this thing would burn thru fuel but it’s surprisingly efficient. Used it on a camping weekend, around the house to burn rope, and light my charcoal grill 30+ times and it’s still half-full. Wow. Quality product too. Made in Japan.
Butane torch
I have had trouble starting fires at higher altitudes and cold weather. Thought this torch would solve the problem. It didn't. The product came with what looks like a standard refillable Bic like lighter and the torch. It took a bit of time to figure out how to install the lighter due to inferior instructions (pull the top straight off.. It doesn't hinge as suggested by the pictures and torch construction) Torch lights fine at moderate altitude and temperatures. Temperature is not as hot as I would like so it was no more valuable than a standard match.
Terrific torch; great customer service from Soto
A couple years ago, I bought a Soto XT Torch from REI. I used it a couple of times, and it worked well. Recently, when I went to use it, it didn't work -- no gas flow, no light. (I'm near sea level, so it is not an altitude issue.) I contacted Soto Customer Service, and they promptly shipped me a new one. Wow, what great customer service. As to the reviews here that complain these torches don't work at high altitude (above 5,000'), in all fairness, the Soto packaging makes that very clear.
Compact, durable camp torch
I still have my original pocket torch from 2012 and love it. I wish this version and the extended XT version had been around back then so I could refill it—my original (and apparently the current version from 2019 on) will only accept Scripto lighters. I’ve had no issues with this unit over all of these years and the heat it provides is a helpful tool for damp kindling that may be tough to start with just a match or normal flame.
A Travel Necessity
I fly extensively and this is my go-to lighter. I remove the Scripto soft flame insert and stick it in my pocket (TSA compliant) and put the Soto skeleton in my checked bag. When I get to my destination, I reassemble the pair and BAM! I’ve got my torch lighter for tonight’s cigar.
Excellent torch!
I think a lot of reviews are being unfair because the quality of the product itself is fantastic. However, I have found that the quality of the lighter you buy to full this is very important - some work better than others. I have found big inconsistency even between "Made in the USA" brand lighters (BIC, others). When you get the right lighter insert, this thing pushes a strong blue flame that consistently lights and is hot enough to instantly start fires. If you're into refilling Soto has other more consistent torches. But nothing beats the peace of mind that comes with carrying another lighter so you don't have to worry about running out of fuel. Not only that... those cheap lighters still work as lighters!
The Best Lighter
Really with out a doubt the best bug out everywhere all purpose lighter I've ever found. Over the years I've had many lighters and just realize how much waste over time there has been. Now I've found I feel one of the best Refillable lighters on the planet, because it just plain works. My wife has used five lighters to my refillable which is still half after lighting up my life with BBQ and much much more. I like it and feel since it is refillable it is very more environment friendly than all those thousands that get tossed every day.
Garbage!
Maybe I got a lemon, but mine was useless. Bought the suggested lighter, tried different ones from a 5 pack and it never worked consistently. Upgraded to the butane “torch” model - much better!
