Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works better than a handheld lighter! I got this as a gift from my grandpa. It is absolutely great for lighting up my MSR Whisperlite Universal. It is much easier to use than a lighter or matches and seems much safer. It will light up my stove in canister mode with one click. It is definitely a reliable way to light your canister stove (but still bring matches just as a backup)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Alcohol stove, works for me Unlike SoCalKen, I was able to use this igniter to light all three alcohol stoves in my backpacking gear. The trick was to hold the igniter tube over the alcohol fuel a few seconds (just above the fuel, 3-5 secs typically) so some vapor collects inside the igniter tube, then the igniter lights the fuel no problem. A nice clean light-up every time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Works in a pinch After purchasing, I used it to light my isobutane stove in my kitchen. It took 3-4 attempts to finally light it. I then took it on a small backpacking trip which ended up being rainy and breezy. Under these conditions it took forever to get it to light. I have not tried using it on my Whisper Lite yet, but will on my next outing. The spark it puts off is very weak. I normally use a flint/steel to light all of my isobutane and white fuel stoves and have better results. I will definitely keep it in my pack. It also went through the wash after I returned home and it still worked. I gave it 3 stars because it is very small and works wet or dry, but it does same a while with weather due to the weak spark.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Doesn't work with alcohol stoves Yes, I know. MSR and the description says this is for canister stoves, but it nor anything I could find on the web said anything about alcohol stoves, so I wanted to try it, because I don't like using the BIC Mini Lighters. I was sort of expecting it wouldn't work, and indeed, it didn't, at least not for me. So I'm just writing this review to share my experience. I'm sure it would work well with a canister stove. I have a canister stove with one built in. Worked every time, and this one sparked every time that I was watching. I even sparked myself once when I was being careless. So good product, which is why I gave it 4 stars, and I recommend it, but not for alcohol stoves. Darn, I'll have to still bring my little lighters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to use lighter I like this little guy, particularly the way I can use it with pretty much any glove I have on. I have not had any problems with cold or wet conditions too. Wind is always a pain, but I think it pretty easy to shield for a good spark. Way less than an ounce too. Good, redundant spark source for a stove.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works but a bit short for me I purchased this for igniting alcohol stoves. It does work, but you may have to employ a few tricks to get it to light the alcohol: 1) As Vandy-SJ stated in their review below, hold the igniter over the alcohol for a few seconds (a count of 5 works for me) to build up alcohol vapor inside the tube prior to actual ignition. I find holding the igniter vertically works better than at an angle. 2) When filling your stove, squirt a bit of alcohol on a large flat surface inside the stove ("large" and "flat" being relative terms where alcohol stoves are concerned, of course). This will improve the evaporation of the alcohol and the chance of gathering that vapor inside the tube. This won't apply to all types of alcohol stoves; mine (RUCAS) just happens to have a large, sloping, concave surface inside which facilitates this technique. Your mileage may vary. 3) If all else fails, place a tiny drop of liquid alcohol directly into the tube or dip the tube into the alcohol in your stove and withdraw it. Now press the ignition button. For a couple seconds your "MSR Handheld Piezo Igniter" becomes your "MSR Handheld Piezo Match". Now just touch it to the pool of alcohol inside your stove and voila! Personally, I'm finding this the easiest technique for my purposes. I realize this igniter was not designed with alcohol stoves in mind. All the same, I found it a little short for my needs. A slightly longer tube (about 1/2 inch) would make it ideal. Otherwise, works as intended.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great but... I have and still use this device however after a recent trip to Montana in less than 32° the device would not work. I don't recall the specs or limitations on it but I had to hold it in my hand to warm it up and it eventually a spark was produced. TG I had a backup lighter (as always) so that came into play as well as my friends lighters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for lighting stoves I bought this to use with my Snow Peak Lightmax stove. I know, blasphemy for not using a Pocket Rocket, but it is what it is. Anyway, this little lighter is perfect! I hated using a lighter or matches to light the stove because I'd have to get really close the stove when lighting. With the piezo igniter I feel very safe and can keep a safe distance away when it ignites. I've even used this with my alcohol stoves. It's very durable and easy to use. I highly recommend this product!

Does this have to be refilled in some way? Is it sensitive to temperature? I live in Alaska.

Asked by: akkayak
The igniter simply creates a spark. It requires no refilling or maintenance. Temperature should not affect performance.

Does this work with MSR Wind Burner stoves?

Asked by: Lucky
No. The product "Details" say that it's not compatible with radiant stoves (Reactor and WindBurner). I tried it on my WindBurner and it could not ignite.
