Sun hat with extra features
Everything is great about this hat! I like the crown adjustability and the way it packs flat. However, I just realized that the hat I ordered didn’t come with a dark under brim fabric to help block bright light like what was advertised. That is one of the reasons I chose this hat over others. I also don’t know if I would ever use the hidden Velcro pocket in the top (which has an insert that looks like an absorbent pad with mesh).
odd design
The hat looks good from the outside, but the method for adjusting the size is idiotic. It's a flimsy plastic hook that you move from space to space to make the hat tighter. It takes up the band on one side only! The more you tighten, the more lopsided the hat fits. Sunday Afternoons started with the hat larger than the normal size and expects you to adjust down. This strange hat is way overpriced at $50 unless you just happen to be one of the few that the hat fits without adjusting or have an odd shaped head.
Nice hat!
Hat fit me great and keeps my head cool in the brightest sun. The drawstring needs fastening to the back, outside of the hat and I did that with a few stiches of thread. After a few days use though, it is not keeping its shape very well, especially at the front top where it is now sagging. I use it for fishing and not church going, so I'll keep wearing it since it is so functional, comfortable and able to protect my ears from sunburn better than a baseball style hat.
Great for Outdoor Work
I bought this for a camping trip where I knew there wouldn't be much shade. The hate kept my face very well covered in the intense sun. It also never got hot; never broke out into a sweat.
Best hat of the bunch
I recently bought several sun hats. After doing lots of research, I purchased the Sunday Afternoons Bug-Free Charter, the Charter Escape, a Tilley TMH55, and a Filson Summer Packer. The Charter Escape won the contest and that is the one I am keeping! I thought I would offer some feedback after comparing the several hats. Sunglasses slots are genius! Love the Sand color. The Charter Escape is just the right size! Big enough to offer some decent protection. Small enough to be worn consistently even when trying to avoid the "big sun hat look". The simple hook and slot adjustment system (a small strap with a hook buckle that slips into different slots to adjust sizing) is the best and most comfortable of any of the hats. The chin strap through the side grommets is also best of any of the hats. It also works great to just loop the chin strap over the top of the hat and have it hang off the back brim. The Charter Escape seems to do well holding its shape even after being smashed. Overall, just really like the hat. Now they just need to make a bug-free version of the Escape!
Great for trails in AK!
Bought this for my husband for our trip to AK. He loved it. Kept his face out of the sun and even the wildlife liked it.
Perfect hat
I puchased this hat along with another competior for a 2wk cruise in some sunny spots around the world. The hat kept me cool and it sat well seated on my head the whole time. When the wind kicked up the strap (hidden in the inside pouch) was easy to sintch-up and store away when things died down. Easy to clean by hand and dryed fast.
Great outdoors hat!
The Charter Escape is a great hat for camping, hiking, etc. The fit is good, even for my extra large head (~24”). The construction seems to be very high quality, which I’ve come to expect from Sunday Afternoons. I’ve used/abused several of their hats here in Alaska, and been incredibly happy every time. This hat is no exception. High quality and great in warm and cool weather. As usual, well done!
Great Hat, No Size Small = Too Bad
Bought this hat for my wife, who's outside in the woods all the time Birding. Alas, she has a small head and tried to use the size adjustment to make it work. But like Outdoor Dad below, if you go down to the max adjustment, it's so lopsided the hat doesn't really fit and is unsightly. Too bad, because it's a really nice hat. If it fits you, it's a keeper! We unfortunately had to take it back.
Perfect Golf Hat after 2 tweaks
Being a golfer I was concerned if this hat would work for me. I measure 22 5/8 inches (57 1/2 cm). Allowing a little room for comfort - my normal hat size is 7 3/8 (59 cm). The medium size fits perfect and can be further adjusted with their elastic hook system in their hat sweat band. I golf a couple times a week and sometimes it gets very windy. I opted to change their hat chin strap system into a trooper style (back of the head tightening system) as seen in my picture. If I don’t need the extra tightness - I adjust the slide very loose and if I need the extra tightness - I tighten it as needed. I played the other day in 20 mph winds without any problems. Additionally, I purchased a 1 inch magnetic coat button - put some double sided tape on it - and inserted it into their sunglass slot to hold my ball marker as the brim is not stiff enough to support a slide-on magnetic ball marker. Now I have the perfect golf hat. FYI: I also own a Tilley LTM5 - and the quality is every bit as good - at half the price.
