Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dorky but effective It looks pretty goofy and I was a little embarrassed when people saw me, but that's what it takes to block the sun. Hiking in AZ I could see others without such a protruding brim or massive fabric over the neck were clearly exposed to the sun despite their eyes being covered. It was also validating to see a trail guide had the same hat- because they work amazingly. If you don't mind looking like a goof-ball, or at least you prefer that to a severe sunburn, this could be the right hat for you. I use it because I hate using sunscreen when backpacking. Unfortunately it's just not possible for a hat to cover your face, neck, and ears without looking goofy, even the other REI hats often leave ears unprotected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great bicycle sun protection My dermatologist recommended using better sun protection while riding my bike. While looking for a sombrero that would fit a 30 inch head/helmet, I stumbled across this item. With a pair of careful scissor cuts to the side mesh to allow for the helmet straps, it fits inside the helmet comfortably without even needing to adjust the strap length. The cuts were along the mesh holes four holes up from the brim extending to the fourth hole from each end. If fraying ever becomes a problem, I will try some type of flexable rubber glue along the edges but so far no problem. The hat still works well without the helmet. I've tried it out on three different Giro helmets of various ages and it works great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best sun-protection hat out there Best wide-brim sun-protection hat. The brim does suprisingly well in the wind. It can be worn loosely or tightened down when the wind blows. Yes, it looks dorky. But, when I spend my days out in the sun in the desert or Sierra Nevada mountains, functionality rules - and that's the Sunday Afternoons hat. I like that the outer part of the brim brim can be folded back for more view of the sky, but then I can fold it back into place when the sun shines stronger - and the brim retains its stability. I bought mine about 10 years ago, and it's still going strong. Great product!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stylishly dorky It's a dorky-looking hat. Therefore, if someone says "Hey nice hat" I question their sincerity. I spent hours on one occasion in the baking sun. The hat kept my brain from boiling. When applying sunscreen, I tend to forget the back of the neck. The hat has saved me from a nasty burn. No other hat will do the job this one will. So don't be a self-conscious fashion plate and go for one that looks cool. Just get the functional hat and call it a day. I've got news: you're not as cool as you think you are anyway.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic product Took this on a 2-week safari. Very, very happy with keeping the sun and dust out of my eyes and hair. The side brims were great. Loved the breathability of the hat--didn't have a sweaty head. Stayed on my head in the wind. No one made any comments about the flap or the dork factor (I didn't care anyway). Came home and washed the hat. Didn't look dirty but lots of dust came out. Just a touch of a bar of soap on the sweatband, and voila, no more brown ring! Looking forward to the next time I can wear this hat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Don't leave home without it! Exactly what I was looking for. EXACTLY. I burn terribly and easily, and my neck usually gets it first. I'd gotten by with a gimme cap with a bandana stuffed in it forever, but when I saw this...well, it's just perfect. It's lightweight, it fits nice without binding, and it BREATHES--that's a big deal. And it goes everywhere with me; sure, hiking, yeah, that's what I got it for, but it pretty much goes everywhere I do anymore. It's that comfortable.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great on a calm day This hat provides great sun protection as long as there is no wind. Unfortunately, I bought this hat for use in the geyser basins of Yellowstone, a place where the wind never stops blowing. In breezy conditions, the cape that is supposed to cover your neck turns into a sail that constantly flaps around. As a result, I find my lower neck unshaded, not to mention the flapping is annoying. There is a velcro tab on the back of the hat that can hold the flap in place, but the hat does not provide adequate protection when the velcro is used. I have been trying to find a great sun hat for several years, and after wearing this hat, the search continues.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Just what the Dr. ordered! My dermatologist told me to get a hat and wear it at ALL times. What I like about this hat is that it gives good side coverage from the sun - but doesn't interfere with my backpack while I am hiking. Baseball caps just don't cover my face enough, and big straw hats don't work with backpacks. So this is a great solution. The brim got bent up a little but I don't mind. Seems to breathe well too!

I'm looking for a hat for sun protection that i could use during a RUN. Ball cap isn't giving me the protection on the side of my face. Have you heard anyone use this hat for running?
