Delicious Lunch!!
I tested the Black Bean Soup. What a delicious and filling lunch. The product was easy to prepare. I had my lunch on a nice drizzly, cool day. It warmed me and kept me going while teaching an outside class for the afternoon. The texture was perfect. The product was not too soupy and runny, but had substance and heft. The weight of the product was perfect to throw into a day pack. It could even be used at any time of day for any meal. (Throw an egg on top for breakfast. Yum!) I think the product can be a great base for other meal ideas as well. All in all, I will be looking to add this product to my hiking pack as a great meal addition.
Simple and tasty
This was a thoroughly-tasty soup. Regarding taste, it is not salty, or sugary, or anything associated with ready-made soup mixes; it is minimalist in ingredients, which is great. I followed the fuel-saving instructions (put mix in boiling water and let sit for ~10 minutes) rather than actively simmering the mix and it hydrated as hoped. The recommended water addition makes it quite soupy, so add a bit less if you like a thicker soup or dip.Outside temperature was ~50 F; it may need simmering at significantly cooler air temperature. This is a fine snack for two people or a moderate meal for one person and I have no reservation against buying this again for future trips.
Good flavor, but not really soup
Soup is not quite an accurate descriptor for this product. I even added a little bit more than the specified amount of water and it was very thick, more like a bean paste. At the same time, the flavor was quite good for a freeze-dried meal. I was thinking it would be good as a bean burrito filling because eating it by itself in its thick state was interesting when a soup-like consistency was what was expected. It was hearty, filling and had good flavor on its own without any additions, so overall a good solid trail meal.
Backpacking
It’s good for camping not backpacking
needs seasonings
I bought this to try out different backpacking foods since we’ve been planning a trip. I was excited to find vegan options and wanted to try it out before heading out so I wouldn’t run into any unpleasant tasting surprises. It tastes just like it says it will except one thing. You can’t taste any seasonings. Thankfully I was home and could add salt, onion powder, adobo seasoning, paprika and tumeric. After those it was delicious!
Food for Pack
This soup mix is quick, tasty and very easy to pack in a backpack. The packaging can handle a bit of abuse, the mix itself amazing. I used the cooking instructions to conserve fuel. In no time I had a hearty meal for myself and my 14 year old daughter. (She loved it) A definite pack for our next trip or even a lazy cook night at home. Thank you for a simple to make but delicious to taste item that is also organic!
If you want soup, add water
Completely delicious, especially with all the fixings. I agree with another reviewer: you’ll need to add more water if you want soup. Otherwise you’ll end up with a tasty burrito filling. Love what Patagonia Provisions is putting out. Don’t stop!
Only For Black Bean Lovers
Organic Black Bean Soup is an okay meal. The only taste is black bean. There is a lack of any other flavors that are noticeable in the taste. A different container must be used for cooking, the packaging wasn't intended to hold boiling water.
High in protein low in flavor
Cooked on stovetop per directions. Consistency was good. Plenty of beans, corn and chipotle peppers. Needed to cook an additional 3 min to get corn to rehydrate and added another half cup of water. Flavor was lacking considering it said it had peppers, onion and garlic. Easy to cook and was easy to carry in hiking bag. Beans were soft, corn still chewy despite additional water and cook time. Overall, if in a pinch it would work but might need packets of salt and pepper to bring out flavor.
Great meal
This was a great meal. We made it will a bit less water and it was more of a very hearty stew. Definitely recommend it.
