Comfortable big bed for car camping
Looking for some cushy comfort from the cold, hard ground while camping where weight is not an issue? The REI Co-op Kingdom Insulated Air bed is your ticket. It comes rolled up in a fairly small package around an included air pump, but then inflates to a plush, comfortable air mattress. The pump is easy to use, if a little short for a taller user, but we did work up quite a sweat inflating the bed, albeit while camping on a humid, mid-Atlantic summer night. The bed itself is thick enough to not feel bumps, soft (and silent) on top, protects from uneven and cold/wet ground, and sturdy enough that my kids couldn't pop it. What's not to like?
A Restful Nights Sleep
I’ve always been a minimalist when it comes to camping. I’d only buy the smallest, most compact gear. But as I got older and had a kid, it was important for me and my family to have a full nights sleep. I must say I was skeptical about an air mattress. When I first tried this REI one, I was blown away by how comfortable it was. It is big enough for 2 adults and 1 Toddler. Only watch out is to not over inflate it. Take into account the weight of everyone on it. I made the mistake of inflate it until it was fully tight and the seem started to seep out air. I’ve since replaced it with a new one (the same one because I love it so much).
Nice - but then not so much
Enjoyed this mattress both in a truck and a 1/2 Dome + tent until two outtings ago. We have owned it for almost 2 years, used maybe 10 nights. It now deflates 75% after several hours. Checked seams and valve with no leaks evident. Inflated it and checked entire upper and lower surface with soapy water. Ah Ha! Several pockets show tiny leaks where the internal battens are sewn to the skin. Tried to repair with a dash of seam adhesive with minimal success. Its beyond warranty, so in the dumpster it goes. Dont get one.
Sleep in Comfort!
Best air mattress that I have used, to date. First, set up was easy. Included pump worked just as it should, inflated easily. Right off the bat I could tell that this was going to be a better experience than other air mattresses I have used. Other air mattresses tend to feel bouncy, and you can always feel when someone else is moving around. This bed is not like that. The surface is firm and comfortable and provided a couple of great nights sleep. I would definitely recommend this bed to others. I have an REI Half Dome 2+ tent and the width of this bed is the same as the tent. Fit was tight but it worked. Temp at night was 50 and we were warm with just a couple fleece blankets.
Nice, but not quite what we needed
This purchase was for my husband who “hates camping and sleeping on the ground.” We tried cots, but he wanted to try an air mattress and was always finding the cheap ones at Fred Meyer to deflate overnight. The plus to this air mattress is this: It did not deflate overnight! He was very happy about that and was very impressed. The downside is: He found it not very comfortable and it was too small for the two of us to comfortably sleep on. Because of the comfort level, we will be returning this product. But we do want to emphasis that it was very nice to use an air mattress that did not deflate overnight!
Was great…till it wasn’t
Like many other reviewers, we were very happy with this mattress for the first few uses, until it just stopped holding air. We only use it 2-3 times a year, and neither my wife or I are that heavy (185 and 110!), and after a couple years of use 2-3x a year this summer it stopped holding air, and by the middle of the night was more then 50% flat. Examined it closely and could not find any signs of holes or leaks, the only thing I can assume is that one of the welded seams somewhere at an edge or baffle failed, or a seal at an inflation point. Either way disappointed, dissatisfied, and frustrated.
Stays inflated, but not queen sized.
The big plus - this is the first mattress we've had that stayed inflated and didn't need air added at 2am. Finally, nice job! For that, 4 stars. But, it's not queen sized, it's a full-size bed. It's just a touch too narrow for comfort. We turned it sideways and put backpacks under our pillows for our heads to lie on so we weren't on top of each other. A queen is 60 inches wide, this is 56. REI always undersizes things, I quit buying clothes there because of this. Hey, REI: not everyone is a wiry little climber, bigger people like the outdoors, too! Please size things accurately!
High Quality
We have used this mattress for 10-15 nights and it has always held pressure for days. It did spring a leak when we left it in the tent all day and it got pretty hot inside. We pump it up pretty firm, so I think it just over pressurized when it got about 30 F hotter in the tent during the day. We were able to patch it in the field with a band-aid and it again held firm pressure all night. REI, please give us an inflation port on the long side of the mattress!! Tents have doors on the long side, so why is the fill port on the short side??? ;-)
Abysmal
Leaks. I used this only on a carpeted floor. By night three, at 180 pounds, I would be touching the floor within two hours. Based on my experience, and other reviews, it seems that if you get this there’s at least a 10% chance the same will happen to you. If you take this camping without testing it for several days you have a decent prospect of being miserable. This seems like a very unacceptable failure rate. Shame on REI for continuing to carry this. And at $150, for a very simple mattress, it seems particularly unconscionable. Now I understand why the sales rep, without prompting, said “you can return it if you don’t like it“.
Good Night Sleep!
Bought two of these to use in the REI Kingdom 6. Two mattresses fit perfectly inside. When inflated, its about 8 inches thick. The pack (mattress and pump) is somewhat heavy but not terrible. Inflation takes about 10 minutes (made my teenage kids do it). My daughter and I slept on one and my son on the other. Both mattresses stayed inflated for the two days and nights of the trip. We did not have to supplement the air. Sleeping was surprisingly comfortable. It was actually more enjoyable than sleeping on the thicker typical air mattresses. Overall I give it an A+ for comfort and durability.
