Terrible tire
I've now had 3 of these tires fail in under 6 months of moderate riding. The first two developed what appeared to be blisters within 4-5 months of install (maybe 1-2k miles). The tire bulged out with a 1 or more large (1 cm to 1 inch) bubbles filled with either air or sealant, making the bike un-rideable. In one case this stranded me ten miles from home. The other instance I at least caught it while still at home. The third tire began to crack open along the treads. It looked like dry rot, which shouldn't happen within 5 months of install, on a tire I bought directly from the shop. The tire was ruined, but I at least noticed the large cracks before it led to catastrophic pressure loss on the trail. I was willing to forgive the first 2 bad tires, but the third time was the charm--I will never trust another WTB riddler again. Between the 3 tires and professional installs, I've blown over $300 on these awful tires which go bad before they even lose their tread.
Impossible Tire To Change
The WTB Riddler tires came with my Cannondale Topstone (Carbon, 105 set) with tubes. They proved to be the hardest bicycle tires I have dealt with to both get on and off the rims. I have been an inveterate bike rider for over 55 years and have never faced such issues. Questioning my tire changing techniques, I went online and found others were having the same issues as me. I wondered if the tubeless-ready bed of the rims was causing my problems, but I received confirmation that it was neither me nor the rims when it took three of us to change a tire on a ride on forest trails when I got a flat. I switched out to an equivalent Schwable tire and have had no further problems.g
this is what you want
Hi there! Waza here to tell yall bout how gnarly these tires are. Went tubeless with these, once they set they held air pretty well and worked great on a multitude of surfaces from salty crack ridden roads to technical trails. I commute with them almost daily and did a century with with 0 problems couple days back. WTB hit it with these!
You will get flats
These tires have extremely poor puncture protection. I could not get them to run tubeless at all, tire wouldn’t seat even with soap and water and they wouldn’t hold air. I’ve ridden the tires about a month everyday (tubed) and can hardly go a few days without a flat. I’ve had flats from grass seeds, twigs, gravel, plastic pieces pretty much everything you could imagine. Tires have left me stranded on bike packing trips multiples times even with extra tubes. Also the tread is breaking off after only a month of daily use. Not super stoked on these and I recommend looking for a different tire. Especially for the price.
Terrible Tubeless Tires
the least reliable tubeless tires that i've ever used. when tubes are in them, they are very comfortable and supple. I've had 2 sets. First one leaked from the side walls. REI replaced them. New ones are nearly impossible to seat in the rim. Need about 90psi to push into place (yes, i use soapy water). But this makes them almost impossible to change with a portable micro pump. Had to ride 10 miles with and unseated oblong tire to get back home and get to a high pressure pump. I only ride these at 35-42 psi, so pumping to 90 just to get the bead to seat is awful.
Will puncture on the slightest gravel
I truly wanted to love these tires, and hoped to be the exception to the negative reviews, but after the 5th puncture on easy gravel and the inability to remove the tire to change it on the road due to tightness, I’ve given up. While they have excellent tread, the slightest bump or hidden root will doom you to a long walk home. Even more importantly, they took me over two trips to the bike shop to get these seated without a compressor, and had to pump to over 100 psi to get an effective seat on the rim. For reference, these are 55max psi tires. As such, I’ve been left stranded a few times because I couldn’t get the tire off the rim after a flat. Even my favorite bike shop remarked on the impossibility to remove the tires without a specialized tool. I hope they are improved on in the next generation, but until then, I’ll be joining the gravel king SK team.
Makes gravel rides more fun
Easy to mount tubeless. I run 42psi rear and 40psi in the front. I weigh about 152 with my camelback and this is perfect pressure for me.
Doesn't mount correctly on my rims
After some struggle I got the front tire to seat correctly, but the back is always slightly out of true. It doesn't seat evenly in the rim the whole way around. I'm using tubes on this setup. I've tried soapy water, extensive massaging, etc. This is on stock rims that came with my Trek Checkpoint ALR4 purchased in 2018. I like the feel and grip of the tires but I don't think I'll purchase them again due to the seating issue.
standard on cannondale topstone
Surprised by bad reviews. These came standard on my Topstone. I came here to buy a new set after wearing out the first set. Mine lasted 1800 miles over six months 80% road 20% dirt. The back has zero tread, front has 50% left. Changed three flats all on the road and they were tough but went in fine with co2 pump. They are tubeless but I use tubes, don't care enough to get fancy. I like the tires and am getting another set.
Tires are fine.
The Riddlers came stock on the Topstone, and I wanted to convert to tubeless. Got some better rims to do this with. The stock Riddler tires were different from one I got separately from REI. Sidewall a slightly different color, and with different text layout. The stocks also had ridges on the rubber every 10 cm or so, which made sealing difficult. The purchased one didn’t. Getting it on the rim was fine (remember to Centre tire in the rim) and then the bead popped into place with an air compressor. Added the sealant, pumped up to 60psi and it’s holding. Not my first choice for tubeless tires (Maxxis or Schwalbe) but these are fine. I like the sidewall look.
