My first GPS watch
I got this watch a few weeks ago and have taken it on jogs around my neighborhood, long hikes in areas with poor reception, and trekking ridgeline trails on a Hawaiian vacation. It's my first GPS watch so, at first, I was not used to its weight and bulk on my small wrist (I have to tighten it down to the 5th notch), but after the first mile or so, I don't tend to notice it as much. The watch only comes with a quick start guide so it takes a bit of fiddling to figure out how to use it. Generally speaking, my usage of it has been pretty simple. The watch met my needs for pace/distance tracking, as a pedometer, elevation tracking, monitoring heart rate, calorie burn counting, navigation, and as a watch that does automatically adjust to a change in time zones. It seems high quality, durable, and was water-resistant enough to survive some dips in the ocean. The battery life will last me through a day-long hike, but it also takes overnight to recharge with its special charger. I wish it used microUSB or type-C so I wouldn't have to keep carrying the charging cord around with me on trips to make sure the watch is charged. I didn't download the Movescount app, and I have not yet synced it with my phone to tap into all the integration features that this watch can handle. I anticipate continuing to use it for hiking, especially as I ramp up training for Mt. Whitney in the fall, but I don't foresee using it daily for my runs, sleep tracking, or step counting as it just too bulky for a female with a smaller/athletic frame.
Satisfied
Recent firmware updates have fixed some of the issues initial reviewers had, I'm 2 weeks into my purchase. Very pleased with the comfort and overall look of the watch. I mainly track trail running, mountain biking, road biking, xc ski, & ski touring. Mainly moderate daily training distances (1-2 hrs). App could have a lot more functionality but does the basics like linking to Strava.
Records multitudes of data
I used the Suunto Spartan Sport HR on runs, hikes and while walking through cities. It recorded data about my speeds, heart rates and elevations. I found it incredibly helpful to monitor my fitness. It is easy to use and you can even pause it if you miss a light while running on streets, something I have not found easily available on other trackers. While hiking it recorded both ascents and descents( which clarified why my knees did not like a particular hike). I have a small wrist but was able to tighten the watch so it did not move as I ran. Great product!
Easy to use watch
Great watch, but bulky for a small wrist. I would love for it to have a smaller watch face. I found that the mileage tracking was more accurate when walking quickly (13.5-14 minute miles) if I used the running setting instead of hiking. It took a few uses before I got the hang of which buttons to push vs. when to use the touch screen, but after I was used to it the watch was easy to navigate. The altitude tracking did not seem consistent between the two times I hiked the same trail. The display is clear even in direct sun. It was easy to sync to my phone through the app, although I haven't used the app since I synced it because I haven't needed to. The battery got me through 5 days with two 1.5 hour walk/runs before it petered out on the third run. Initially I had to look up a few things in the online guide to figure out how to change the sound and messaging options but the help topics were easy to navigate. Overall it is a good watch, but would be excellent if it were smaller.
Inconsistent performance of various features
I tested this watch extensively for a month from the date of my purchase. The watch is good looking and the functions both in the watch and in the app are elegant. The problem starts when I put all important features to test - the features that you really pay $500 for. 1. Altitude Meter - I bought this watch mainly to work for my hikes and mountaineering. Altitude measure is absolutely important for me. This watch even has "hiking" and "mountaineering" features under exercise function so I thought Suunto figured this out. But, the altitude measures that I received in variety of times and in various terrains are highly inconsistent. The watch has an option Settings -> Outdoor -> "Auto Adjust Reference altitude". This option is available to pick the altitude automatically based on gps information when you do not know the altitude and be able to insert it manually. Anytime I use this option the it refreshes forever and never captures the altitude. So, basically, in unknown terrain there is no way I can rely on the altitude. Even a free google app provides better altitude reading (via gps) then this watch. I raised this issue a number of times with Suunto support but their response is inadequate and they did nothing to resolve the issue. 2. Auto-adjust time - The watch is supposed to automatically adjust the time when you move time zones, as long as you connect your watch to gps (for example, by going to Navigation and picking "Your Location" option). this works sporadically and stopped working after their recent software update, at least for me. 3. Barometer - There is no way for me to say if the barometer measure is accurate. However, I can say it is fairly inconsistent and changes rapidly by adjusting reference altitude. I know alti and baro are connected but at the end of the day I cannot rely on barometer to provide me good measure of weather changes while in the mountains. The "storm alarm" feature, which works based on this premise, is essentially rendered useless. 4. Thermometer - In this case, I know, it is a technological restriction, but the temperature is never accurate if the watch is on your wrist. The watch basically picks up the heat from your body and shows higher temperature (if you are in cold weather). To measure temperature accurately, you will have to keep the watch away from your body. But while doing that, it takes about 10 mins for the wathc to stabilize on a temperature and even then I noticed variances with actual temperature. Taking 10 mins to measure temperature is not a practical solution on the mountains. Among the features that work, I believe steps count and wrist HR are fairly good. I never had an issue with GPS tracking. I did not use the watch adequately in water, so I will not review its durability or function under water. In summary, this watch is good if you are going to use it for day to day standard activity like running, weights training in gym, aerobics, standard sport, etc. However, if you are going to use this for only those activities don't know why you will spend $500+ on it. I bought this watch to aid me in hard terrains and mountains giving highly reliable and consistent (if not accurate reading to a feet) altitude, temperate, barometer, and gps readings and it fails miserably. I basically lost confidence in the watch and returning it today - exactly one month after purchase.
Running Tracker with all the bells and whistles
Very impressed by the product from the second I opened the box it was in. The weight of the watch was significant compared to any other watches I had tried before but felt very durable but also extremely sturdy. Additionally, the watch band felt great. The fact that it has two loops on the band to make sure it stays close on well, as well as the way the band is formed makes sure that it isn't going to come off of your wrist, even if doing some more intense athletic workouts. Every run or activity tracked on the watch has gone seamlessly and tracked movements very well. The interface for the watch did take some learning, and even to this minute I'm still learning about all of the features, but man was I impressed with all that it has to offer. With every run, the watch was able to display so many different areas of what occurred during your run and easily translates over to the app for my phone as well as on my computer. Anyone looking for a quality watch that comes with all the bells and whistles, I assure you to look no further. I've never been so impressed by a watch but was quick to fall in love with everything it has to offer and has performed greatly throughout numerous conditions.
Lot of sport options
The watch is very good for tracking, but it lacks some useful feature like: Find my phone. Answer calls. The sleep tracking is good but the app on the phone does not show you details, like rem sleep toss and turn and so on. The totals on the app and on the watch do not match, there is a 24hr delay for some reason. The water resistance is good so far, but I have not gone swimming or surfing yet, in the shower it works.
As a watch, this is outstanding
It has the look I wanted, it has every feature I could think of, plus a lot more. I worried that the black would be too bulky on my girly wrist, but it looks very tactical and rugged, so that was okay. There was one issue that was probably my fault for misunderstanding. I want a tracker that will automatically map my route using GPS when I go out. Not where I have to push a button and say "start exercise" (or whatever the company uses for their terminology). I wear reading glasses and it is impossible to read the screens on these things - on any brand - without my reading glasses, but who wants to carry reading glasses on a run? You see? The Suunto seemed like it would just start mapping my route as I went, but it didn't. I did have to push the 'start exercise' button. I also dislike the Movescount app. There's no way to see your sleep tracking on the app or the website, only by looking at the watch, which gives a very general overview but no detail at all. The other problem was that the daily step count was inaccurate. On my first day it said I'd done 850 steps...but that I'd gone 1.6 miles. (The mileage was accurate, the step count was not.) Today it had me doing 3500 steps (probably close to accurate) but didn't register any distance at all. The device is great as a watch, but the interface with the Movescount is too awkward and fiddly for me. As soon as I have time to take it back to REI, I will, and probably pick up a Garmin while there.
used/refurbished
Clearly received a used/refurbished edition of the watch given packaging and how the watch started up versus how it should have based on the instructions. Seems to work fine based on a few early workouts, but heart rate jumps around more than it should. Decent watch, but not worth $300+.
Great real time tracker for long runs
The Suunto Spartan Sport HR Baro GPS Watch has wonderfully accurate heart rate, gps, distance, and timing features. Coupled with long battery life, this is a great watch to wear on long runs.
