Has no basemaps, and isn't for the large-wristed

After hours of research on the web (Coros, Polar, Garmin, Suunto, Samsung, Casio), looking for sports watches with GPS AND built-in maps, I settled upon the Suunto 9 Peak Pro. It had all the sensors, all the activity tracking capabilities one could ask for, at a fairly reasonable price (well, at least compared to Garmin). Plus, it was attractive, not chunky, and seemed to have a good build quality. Once at home, the first problem cropped up. The included strap wasn't big enough for me to wear this watch. I could barely pass the tang through the outermost hole on the strap, and in that position, the secondary securing pin wouldn't really fit into any of the holes. My wrist is about 21.5cm (~ 8.5") in circumference. I realize this is towards the upper end of the scale. But I've never had a problem with any Garmin or other sport watch I've owned. For reference, from Reeds Jewelry website: "... watch bands are manufactured to standard lengths. For women, the standard is between 6 3/4 inches and 8 inches, depending on the style and manufacturer. For men, the standard watch band measures between 7 3/4 inches and 9 1/2 inches, again, depending on the style and manufacturer." For Suunto, this is a nope. The bigger problem is the Peak Pro has no included basemaps. REI says it does, but it doesn't. REI's website description of this watch says: Visual Map Display Yes Basemap Yes My main focus on this puchase was to have offline GPS locations plotted on a base map, on the watch. Not transmitted to my cellphone. Not displayed later at home on my computer. On. The. Watch. It records tracks or routes, allows you to import them into the device, but has no background map capability (unlike many Garmin watches). Having a breadcrumb trail is not the same as displaying same over some frame of reference. If you live in an area where cell coverage is spotty, or non-existant, you'll understand the desire for a display that includes not just a breadcrumb trail, but also typical map elements nearby (like the less expensive Suunto 7 does, BTW). I recalled the salesperson mentioning some sort of return policy, so I decided to take it back. I have other watches, including a smartwatch with many of the health/fitness functions, but without the GPS and mapping. Didn't really need a $500-600 watch that couldn't do what I wanted. The return experience was also less than stellar. Everything was boxed as originally received, I had my receipt. The guy who took the return was pleasant and helpful, but his colleague kept butting in to the discussion, casting aspersions on my return and saying it should not be accepted. So, in short, fine watch, unless you happen to have large wrists, and unless you want actual on-board basemaps for offline use.

functions as expected

Bought the watch in the beginning of January and now after 9 months of use I think it is fair to review. Yes the watch doesn’t have a lot of watch faces, yes there are no detailed maps (just plots on black background). I’m not sure why this is a surprise to anyone in the comments who researched the different brands. Anyways, bought the watch for robustness and battery life, and I am pleased with both. A lot of reviews commented on how the GPS is worse than some other brands, but after a hundred miles I haven’t seen weird tracks. This could differ with tall buildings and such. The distance and elevation is also super consistent with expectations.

My 3rd Suunto device

The software is the same as my Suunto 5. I splurged on this when it was on sale. It charges very quickly. I like the touchscreen and the few bits of additional functions, e.g. HRV. It lost one star because after a month, one of the straps is tearing from pin that holds it to the watch. The Suunto 5 strap was much bulkier, less generic. It also lost a star because I had to do two soft resets. I would loosen the watch at certain times, as I did with the Suunto 5. When this watch cannot find your HR, it shuts off that feature and the sleep tracking feature, but they do not turn back on, hence the reset. Instead of loosening it, I completely remove it now. I am not a fan of that.

Switched from Apple Watch

I had been using an Apple watch for years and wanted something round/better looking with good GPS/activity tracking and better battery life. I've had this watch for a couple weeks and am loving it. Everything on the watch/app works well. I chose this over Garmin/others because it was thinner and I didn't need maps on the screen or payment ability which are the main features this lacks compared to the other watches.

Suunto Data Sharing Policies

Suunto recently started requiring users to share location data and health data through the app. The sharing is not optional if one desires to use the Suunto app. If the user does not consent, Suunto offers app deletion as an option. Nice watch, but I will not be buying another Suunto product as a result of their data policies.

Great watch

I love this watch. Upgraded from Spartan Trainer, love the touch screen, tracks my rides and runs with what I assume to be great accuracy. BUT buy it from REI and do not, under any circumstances, buy directly from Suunto. They're customer service is the most abysmal of any company I've had the displeasure of dealing with. Completely uncommunicative, can only "chat" them. Absolutely awful. The polar opposite of dealing with REI.

Durable but significantly undercounts steps.

Durable and great for water sports including swimming, SUP, Kayaking, etc. Battery life is terrific; about 6 days. Terrible at counting steps; undercounts significantly. Doesn't count at all if you are using most activity trackers.

First Suunto

I must say i'm impressed with this watch. It has alot of bells and whistles. And a first time owner of this product the battery life that was a selling point for me. I've owned Apple watch, and fitbits but and I must say its a lower quality products with a crazy price range for a fraction of the batter life of this product. The price for this product is also well with in range and better quality. As an athlete i'm impressed. However, the silicone band can be a bit more durable with the purchase product. Within 3 months of owning the product i've manage to loose the little ball at the end of the band. Besides that issue, I will continue to purchase Suunto products.

The REI comparison chart shows this as having base maps, and it does not. The biometrics are both off and slow to read. HR is finicky and O2 sat is super finicky and usually wrong. The watch looks sharp, but overall, just doesn't cut it.

Great, Solid Built Outdoor Adventure Watch!

Nicely built. Solid watch with Sapphire crystal watch face unlike most in this price range (that are plastic). Simple very functional, easy to use design. Responsive touch screen. Great GPS with Breadcrumb feature. Long battery life. Fully charges in little more than 15 minutes. Only issues for me: Watch face larger than I like (42mm). O2 sensor not very accurate and quirky to function. I'm not sure of sleep monitoring accuracy.

great watch

Very happy with the watch - that said I was using a FitBit Versa so anything would probably be better! Battery life is epic. GPS works well. Lots of sports options. The vibration is a bit noisy, which is think that is a function of the connection to the band which can rattle. Also, the Sunnto App does not allow you to pick which notifications it sends so it is everything or nothing - I would prefer just calls and texts, but nothing is better every little ding.
