Nice rack, read before you buy.

Before purchasing this rack, I carefully read all the reviews. Another user mentioned a problem with the pins that secure the rear wheel (falling out). When I asked REI about this the manager told me that Yakima addressed that issue by using a steel pin. When my hitch was delivered, it had the plastic pins installed? During assembly of the receiver section those pins dropped right out onto my living room carpet? I bought a threaded bolt and lock nut to fix the problem. Just a terrible design on Yakima’s part. Those plastic pins are supposed to interlock in the center but they don’t seem to make contact when the bike is mounted. Do you really want to trust your road bike on this when on the interstate? It’s an easy fix but one they should have addressed. After you clear that hurdle, you will really love the simplicity and ease of use!

Wouldn't trust it with my bike

Needed a hitch-mounted system for one bike, and this seemed to be the best- Yakima is a good name - but the mount into the hitch was not secure. Sold as fitting 1.25" to 2" receivers, which I guess really means it doesn't fit either. Adjusted it into my 2" receiver as tight as possible and it still rocked back and forth like a hobby horse. Not going to trust my bike to that. Website suggested having to use shims if it was loose. Seriously? That was reason enough to send it back.

Very good for transporting a single bike.

I bought this rack during the pandemic because I got sick and tired of taking off the front wheel and trying to fit my bike into the trunk of my car. I finally decided to invest in a tow hitch assembly and a bike rack. This rack has been very good and I would recommend it to anyone interested in buying a single bike rack. The only complaint I have is that is does not fold upwards when not in use. No worries - on my hatchback, even with the rack still in place I haven’t had any problems parking. I’ve used this rack to transport my road bike (700c wheels,) gravel/all-terrain bike (650b wheels,) and my fat bike (26” x 4.6” wide) and all of them mount fine and have been stable during transporting. What I really like about this rack is that all the clamping is done on the wheels and there is no clamping on the frame. I did replace the pin holding the back tray with a SS bolt + nylock nut to address any risk of the back tray dislodging due to a broken pin. I also cut a (roughly) 4” piece of inner tube and threaded the back ratcheting strap through it so that as I clamp down the strap onto the back wheel, it’s the rubber inner tube rather than the strap contacting the wheels - this makes sure the strap doesn’t rub my carbon wheels. I’m the only one in my family who rides, so this rack has been affordable, reliable, and super convenient. Taking it on and off is easy and the rack is lockable. With cable lock, I can lock the bike to the rack and the tightening/anti wobble knob can also lock so that the tensioner cannot be undone - this prevents someone from stealing the rack from my car when it’s parked. If you’re just looking to transport a single bike and want to do it on a budget, this is a great rack for the money. Is it perfect? Maybe not, but the flaws are minor and after changing a plastic pin to a steel nut and bolt, any shortcomings are easily addressed.

Very nice rack.

Much lighter then my old rack, but still very solid. I don't know why another reviewer said that it rocked back and forth, he must not have installed it correctly. It has a cam that tightens it in the hitch. Also, you don't need tools to install this, it has a tightening knob. Note that it does not fold up when there isn't a bike on the rack.

Terrific Single-Bike Carrier

Sturdy, well-engineered carrier for single bike. Installs and can be removed quickly and easily. Slight lateral motion when driving, but minimal. Bike seems very secure. My only issue with the rack is, while reported to be able to accommodate tires up to 5", it is difficult to move front bar over my 4.8" tire. I doubt any wider tire would fit as it is a bit of a struggle to get the bar seated over my tire. Otherwise, I would readily give the rack a 5 star rating.

Pretty rad rack

Works great. Wish a hitch pin could go all the way through but the lock still works just fin. It's more just peace of mind than anything but perfect rack for one bike. And it fits both my road bike and downhill bike without having to switch pieces around.

Perfect For What I Needed

I have a 2018 Jeep Wrangler JL with a 2" hitch receiver and standard spare tire. I never need to transport more than one bike and I wanted something light that would be easy to install and remove as needed. I was afraid this rack would not clear the spare tire. It does with no problem. I have carried my road bike and a mountain bike on several test runs and purposely went over speed bumps and railroad tracks. The bike was very stable. At 70 mph on the highway, there was no issue. I have seen one review that stated the rack was not stable in a 2" receiver. I did not find that to be the case. When installing, the knob should be tightened as tight as possible. Then wiggle the rack and tighten more. The rack will be stable in a 2" receiver. The tailgate will only open a couple inches with the rack installed with no bike loaded. I'm OK with this because the rack is easily removed and installed. At 25 lbs, it is easy to remove and store in the garage when not needed. The rack includes a cable in front in addition to the ratcheting tie down for the rear wheel. I like having the extra protection of the cable while transporting the bike. The cable is advertised as a security cable to prevent theft. I'm not convinced it lives up to that. I'm pretty sure I could break the cable loose. The rack also has a lock that secures it to the receiver. Both locks use the same key (Yakima SKS system).

Good simple single bike carrier but wanting more

Good single bike rack, however, Just be aware that this does not have a tilting feature so the bike will/may have to come off if you need to access the trunk if you have a hatchback,SUV, or truck with a camper. Also, because there is no tilting feature, the rack cannot be tilted/folded up when not in use. It would have also been nice if the rack had the adjustability to move left and right to center the bike to the car (my 29er tire sticks out further on the psssenger side). The front tire does dip down and is lower than the rear tire on the rack so if you’re weird about the bike being level on the bike rack this may annoy you, however, I’ve noticed that it helps position the handlebars on the bike to sit just below the roofline on my wagon and not stick out above it (may help gas mileage??) The lock cable feature is useful for quick runs into the coffee shop or market, however, a beefier security device/cable should be used if the bike will be staying on the rack for longer periods. Lastly, this will forever be a single bike rack. You cannot purchase and attach an extension/add-on to make it carry an additional bike like that of the KÜAT or Rockymounts. Overall this is a good rack. Yakima succeeded in developing a simple single bike carrier style hitch rack.

Fits my needs nicely.

I have a small car and a mountain bike. This rack is super easy off and on, although I did have to get the nice REI employee to explain that the knob to lock it to the car and adjust the fit in the hitch receiver is locked when it freewheels and unlocked when it turns, and it's super easy to load my bike. The cable lock is hard for me to get out of its tube, and, of course, being a cable, is probably pretty easy for a bad guy to cut, but I took the bike off for the night in the hotel. Overall, a great, basic bike hauler

Bang for your buck

Owned for 3 months, used 3x a week. This rack is lightweight and easy to install/remove. I’ve had 27.5” and 29” mountain bikes on this, both with 2.6” tires. Never a problem getting the bar over the tires. I’ve tested this rack over posted speeds just to see if there was any issues and found none. The one thing I’d like to see Yakima change is the length in the cable locks, they always seem too short for my liking. The one this I am not thrilled about is the flex when rolling over off camber bumps or drives. It just would give me peace of mind if it didn’t do that. Also, it sits close to the vehicle and doesn’t flip up which I would like to have. I’m satisfied with my overall impressions for the price paid.

Impossible to insert stinger into hitch receiver.

I have a 1.25" receiver and the stinger of the rack does not collapse enough to get it inserted. I made sure I was holding my mouth right and everything, but no go. Second dislike: the plastic shelf that the rear wheel sits upon is kinda junky with the plastic. It does not provide assurance the wheel is being supported well if the strap is cinched down. Let's talk about that strap. Again kinda junky on the plastic, and very difficult inserting and pulling loose from the lock mechanism. I will stick with Thule racks, which is what I have ordered at the time of this review.
