Awesome rack!
We've owned a Yakima HangOver 6 for two seasons now and use it on both a minivan (Toyota Sienna) and a 3/4 ton truck (Ram 2500) and even a little EV (Chevy Bolt). I'm not sure what the negative reviews are about, we absolutely love this thing. Easy to load, solidly holds bikes, and super quick to get them on and off. We generally keep the rack tilted one notch down to leave room for the front tires, and only in 90 degree mode when we don't have bikes on, which keeps it close to the car. We've recommended it to tons of people, it's a great conversation starter in parking lots, hah!
Too Low for a RAV4 Hitch
This bike rack actually works very well for managing up to 4 bikes when traveling on even/flat surfaces in a RAV4 (2021 or older) with a rear mounted hitch. Unfortunately, the mountable hitch location on the tab 4 means that this bike rack only has about 8.5-9” of ground clearance on a flat road. I measured my Trek-Marlin-8 on the rack in the slanted position (required for carrying bikes on a hatchback vehicle) and the trail bike had a ground clearance of only 8”. If you have an even longer bike (from head tube to the back of the bottom tire) you’ll have even less clearance so driving up angled surfaces/sloped roads from a flat position might bottom out and jam up your rear tires.
just doesn't work
I've had this rack for a year now and I wanted to like it but it just doesn't work well at all. I've tried every way of mounting my bikes but they are always slipping out of the cradles. This includes bikes with large forks, medium size forks and small forks. Even my son's full suspension bike won't ride for long without slipping out of the top part of the rack. I have to stop at least every hour and readjust the bikes. I also bought 4 extra rubber straps and I'm on my last strap. I will be selling this piece of junk for a fraction of what I bought it for and continuing my search for a decent bike rack. Don't waste your money on this. I use my $100 Walmart bike rack more often than the Yakima.
Bad design
The design of the hinge that allows you to lower the rack is faulty. The rack suddenly failed and our bikes came off in traffic. Luckily no one was killed. I am sure that Yakima would argue that its up to the user to ensure....etc. But, good design makes it hard, not easy to think its locked when its not.
Nice Rack!
It works great on my Wrangler and on my minivan. You can place the mast at different positions while loading and driving. While loading, I lower the mast to it's lowest position, put the 4 bikes on and raise it back up. So fast. This is the future of bike racks. Hoping they add a ski attachment quickly!
Works for us
I have tried several different tray style carriers, but now that we are transporting more than two bikes I wanted something that didn't extend so far behind the vehicle. This Yakima rack works for both our Tacoma (open bed) and FJ Cruiser (with and without Backswing adapter). There are three bolt holes to set the length of the mast. If you want to run the mast fully vertical on the FJ with no hitch extender, it must be in the highest position. My limiting factor is a Trek Slash, which has 29" wheels and a 160mm fork, so the highest position is needed to keep the tire off the back of the FJ. With the Backswing adapter, I can run the mast in the second highest position because the adapter adds a little height, but also moves everything rearward a bit. In the highest mast position (regarding mast length and vertical), it can be difficult to get a bike in the fork cradle. (keep in mind my FJ is also lifted, so the hitch is higher than normal as well). To make things easier, I will move the mast to the angled position, load the bikes, then push it to the vertical position for transport. Overall, this rack works for my needs very well, but may not be for everyone.
Doesn't work well on a minivan
There is no way to lock this rack into the vertical position while leaving on the front wheels of the mountain bikes it is carrying. I think the only vehicle that it would work on in that aspect is a pickup truck with no shell. Also, the strength and height required to mount the bikes onto it makes it really hard for some people. Yakima says the next position down from vertical is okay to carry the bikes but there is a lot of wobble and it doesn't feel solid or safe. I'll be returning it and will get a traditional gutter type carrier.
Very disappointing
It weighs a ton when loaded with four bikes so moving it up to lock into position is a good workout. I’m surprised that Yakima released such a bad design and quality product. All the rubber straps broke and a few months. The attached hooks for the forks are screwed on and kept coming loose after every drive. Still looking for a good vertical bike rack.
Very well built, fits on Tesla X
I put this behemoth together yesterday, and it is heavy but well constructed. I think if you were of shorter stature, putting bikes on this rack could be a challenge. I'm 6'2" and struggled a bit the first time. For our SUV, the rack needs to be extended to keep the tires out of contact with the vehicle, which extends the rig considerably. Still, this is the best solution we've found for moving bikes with this model.
Works, but really big
I wanted to love this bike rack. In the end, I returned it for a platform style rack. Specially the Kuat with extension piece. The platform rack can sit on my car the entire riding season. Where-as the Hangover is really big and gets in the way for daily activities. I drive an outback for reference for others.
