The Marmot Fortress 3P is an excellent 3-4 season tent and well suited for early spring, late fall, winter and high elevation backpacking. It's really well built and can handle significant wind and weather. All of the screened areas can be zipped closed to maintain warmth and prevent wind from entering the tent. I just got back from a backpacking trip where I camped at 9k foot elevation with wet snow. The tent did extremely well, and I couldn't be more pleased. I'm extremely happy with this purchase and would highly recommend this tent.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This tent was outstanding on the Teton Crest trail and in the Grand Canyon. I spent much time researching tents before this purchase, and valued strength and weather protection over weight and convenience features. I mainly backpack off season where overnight temperatures are 20-30 degrees. The Marmot Fortress kept me 10-15 degrees warmer than the outside temperatures, and held up well in 50mph sustained winds at Static Peak Divide. And in the Grand Canyon at Thunder River and Deer Creek, I found the tent ventilated well during the days and sealed in warmth at night. I slept extremely well in this tent, and wanted to share my positive experiences with the Fortress 3P.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This tent has all the features I was looking for. It can be used for four seasons and is light in weight.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] This is known as a 3 season tent, believe me this tent can handle any season. It may be over 5 lbs. but I have never been knocked down from a mosquito landing on my back. Seriously this is a perfect tent, and I get the ultralight thing, but if you are out in the early spring, or late fall this is for you And I have seen reviews about the ventilation, if you are one of them. Learn how to use a zipper. Marmot has one of the best tents on the market ! The Fortress Series period
Bought this tent for 2 people (enough room to put bags inside). Used it for 3 as well (with bags under the rain cover). Really easy and quick to set up, strong and robust so far (not yet tried in really windy/stormy conditions though). Used it in the snow as well as desert/rocky area. Usefull pockets and lamps hook. Though pegs, lots of possibility to anchor it if needed. Pretty light, even when carried by only 1 person.
This tent really is great! I love how it handles the cold, with enough mesh for the summer. It seems to be very strong…had it out in some really windy conditions. It’s a great tent and I highly recommend it (if you can still find one!).
Easy enough for one person to put up. The color coded tabs were super helpful and it’s great for car camping! While i didn’t encounter any inclement weather during my trip, it felt very secure when the wind did pick up. This is the perfect size for me, my dog and my gear. Like one of the other other reviewers mentioned, the vent on top not having any mesh over it seems like an odd oversight. I will probably end up modifying it as well, but it was cool enough at night to manage with just the lower, meshed one open.
I took this tent on a 20 mile overnight hike in Havasupai Falls, Arizona. I divided the weight of the tent between me and my friend; I carried the tent itself and she carried the poles, which made it pretty easy for us to carry through the long hike. When we reached the campground and set up the tent, we were impressed by how easy it was to set up -- which was the most important feature for me when picking out a tent to buy. The instructions were easy to follow and the poles didn't require us to funnel it through anything unlike my previous tent; they simply clipped on to the hooks. The inside of the tent was spacious enough to fit two people and our backpacks comfortably. Adding the rainfly was simple enough, had a smart tightening/loosing mechanism, and provided a decent cover outside the tent door for us to place our shoes. Getting in and out of the tent was easy as well. The tent also has several big mesh doors that kept us cool in the heat of the desert day (70F) and closing it kept us warm and dry during the cold desert night (dropping to 34F). It took only one person to roll up, pack the tent, and fit it back inside the bag -- and unlike my previous tent, we didn't have to deal with air getting trapped inside the tent. I definitely would recommend this tent and am planning to take it winter hiking in New England as well.
I love the design, ease of setup, and appearant quality. The full closure should do well from the snowy forest to Black Rock City. But in its bag, with all the parts, it weighs 7lb 6oz. The two man version is 6lb 3oz.
[This review was collected as part of a promotion.] Bought this for xmas, got to use it for the first time over the weekend (March 2023). night time temps went down to the mid 20'sF. Set up was super easy in the dark with just a headlamp on. I used this car camping so it was just me and my giant gear bag and i had plenty of room for me to spread out. kept all the vents closed and no condensation issues. I will be using this for most of my camp outs. i'm 6'3" and the bent pole design is a great feature as it kept the tent wall off the foot of my extralong sleeping bag. The main dome gear hook worked like a dream, meaning no sag from hold a big lantern thanks to the cross pole design.
