Measurements are stated in inches unless otherwise indicated. Size chart values represent body measurements, not garment measurements. Some women's pants are available in petite and tall sizes. Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".
PETITE: Generally, as compared to regular sizes, petite sizes are 2.5 inches shorter in inseam, 1 inch shorter in body length, 1.25 inches shorter in sleeve length and ¾ inch shorter in total rise.
TALL: tall sizes are 3 inches longer in inseam, 2 inches longer in body length, 2.5 inches longer in sleeve length and 1.25 inches longer in total rise.
Capri or cropped pants have an intentionally shorter inseam—reference the technical specs instead of this chart.
Inseam is measured to the floor.

I have been wanting a convertible hiking pant. I typically wear a size 18W, but I sized up wanting these to be comfortable. They fit great in the waist/hips and the belt is really helpful. They weren't too tight in the legs EXCEPT where the zipper was. The zipper cut into my legs while bending/stooping/sitting in a way that was so completely uncomfortable. If you have extra skinny legs, maybe these would work. But like I said, the legs weren't tight, just the zipper area. I really wanted to love these, but returned them. Absolutely disappointed. I feel like REI hasn't quite figured out plus sizes yet.
The snap button is not there it is a regular button that will soon come off. I just got them and right now the button will not fit thru the button hole. These used to have elastic in the waist that you could pull tighter and now they have this pull thing to tighten them put it only pulls from one side. The sizing is much smaller than it was before. The legs are now very tight. I do not need the size I buy but need bigger legs as I have large legs and now these are too tight. I have 3 older pairs and they are much better.
I ordered these solely based on the fact that the sahara nonconvertable pants fit me so well, and we're very comfortable. I figured, alright, these 18's fit, let's order the convertable ones for my trip. Ha, just kidding. They were like a 16 or less, and there was no way I was going to be able to button them. As a side note, I was disappointed to find that unlike their pants counterpart, this had a weird zipper at the end of the pant leg, instead of a synch cord. So, order a size up. That way if they're too big, you could at least wear a belt, rather than not be able to get them on at all. Plus there was an adjustable belt built in, so that could be used.
So I had a size 16 that fit but were tight. I wanted something looser, so I returned them and ordered the plus size 18. To my surprise, no more stretch/elastic waist. So now at least the pants fit looser everywhere else, but the waist feels no bigger than the size 16 did. Seems counter intuitive. The fabric is perfect and they feel great on, but because there's zero give in the waist, I can't recommend the plus size.
I really wanted to like these, and was ready to buy the other color as soon as I knew they fit and looked right, but sadly they did not. These run smaller than previous versions, not drastically smaller, but definitely noticeably smaller. Also, the zip off is higher on these than previous versions, way higher than I prefer. I will be returning the pair I purchased.
These are incredibly tight. I had ordered these several times each going up a size. Not comfortable at all and I really wanted to like these. REI is not very plus size inclusive- Very Disappointing. I was excited to see these only to find that these are not true to size and even with going up two pant sizes.
Look, I know I’m a big girl. I ALSO know that I wear a size 16-18 in pants in just about every store that sells pants. I got a size 20 for some “extra” room and could barely button them. I feel like I would need a size 24 to be comfortable according to their sizing and that’s ridiculous. These are not curvy friendly at all for being “plus size.”
If REI "truly" wants to get behind the advertising message of "Body Shape Shouldn't Determine Adventure Size", then CUT IT OUT with the idea that women beyond size 2-10 couldn't "possibly" need a REAL inseam!! (And that means, yes, BEYOND 34"!!) REI, you SERIOUSLY dropped the ball on this one.
I bought a pair of Sahara convertible pants from REI about 10 years ago. You can tell I loved, loved, loved them because I am still wearing them. They fully stand up to the task of all-day hiking. I wanted to buy another pair about 5 years ago, but whoever was in charge of design at the time decided the Sahara's needed to be fashionable and have a very short crotch. Seriously??? They're hiking pants, for heaven's sake. So I waited another 5 years for REI to come to their senses. This new design sits *close* to the waist, but the crotch depth is still a full 1.5 inches shorter. Maybe with time, that will quit bugging me. I like that REI kept the crotch gusset since these pants are supposed to allow me to scramble over rocks, etc.. However, they narrowed the width of the gusset and that's where missing crotch length went. What I find difficult to live with is the lack of cargo pockets. The old style had true cargo pockets that I could actually put a birding field guide in, not the vestigial pockets the latest design has. These are super tiny. I can barely fit my fold-over wallet in there, let alone a pair of sunglasses in a soft case. The sunglasses would stick out. Also, the side pockets are a full 2" shorter than they used to be. And there is no inset zipper pocket inside. Not so functional. One thing that's missing is the little corded loop that used to be sewn into the waist band. I used that for hooking my keys or a small flashlight, etc. Even with these annoying deficiencies, I'm keeping the pants because they're still better than anything else I've come across. But come on, REI. These are supposed to be functional pants. Just because I'm a woman, doesn't mean I don't need proper hiking clothing that works for the job.
This is my second pair of REI convertible pants, and the product development in the intervening years is significant. The shorts are a comfortable length, the pockets in the right places and have good functionality. The waist adjustment is really an advancement though. No drawstring that gets caught in the zipper, it's almost a belt cinch. Quick drying, great fit and shape.
