REI Exclusive 940 - Perfection!
Allen
The Benchmade 940 has been one of my favorite knives since its debut around 2000. The REI Exclusive model is the perfect evolution of what I consider one of the best folding knives on the market. The Axis Lock is as fun to manipulate as it is practical. I appreciate being able to easily close the knife with one hand. I love how the color combination pays tribute to the original 940 featuring green G10 scales paired with purple back spacers. The smooth G10 is great for everyday carry because it is easy to draw from the pocket smoothly without tearing up my pants. The shape of the knife makes it easy to forget its in the pocket until I need it. If I were designing an exclusive based on the 940 this is exactly how I would have done it. There is a reason why I have four 940 variants in my collection. They are tough to beat. Well done!

Received an open box with broken seal. Fingerprints all over the blade. Clip was scratched to pieces. Obviously not the quality and attention to detail I expected from REI.

Incredible.

Blown away with the quality. This was a bit of a splurge for me to be honest and the day after I bought it I wondered if i really needed a knife this pricey... but from the first time I used it i knew I made the right call. It cuts through thick cardboard like butter - no sawing needed after you get the point in. Best knife I have ever owned and a real joy to use.

Easily the best pocket knife under $200

To the uninitiated, buying a knife for your pocket at this price seems ludicrous. To the informed and knife-obsessed, it's a great value! This knife combines one of the best steels in the industry (it's considered a super-steel), with the best locking mechanism in any folding blade (Benchmade's Axis Lock), and a tougher-than-nails G10 handle. Once you consider the ergonomics, the ease of cleaning, and the lifetime of free professional sharpening you get from Benchmade, this is an amazing value. I love it and carry it every day. Deployment, lock-up, blade centering, and fit and finish are perfect. Love it.

Slim, lightweight EDC

Not to boast, but I got this knife for $35, due to the 20% member discount, and my accumulated REI dividend. Best $35 I ever spent. A very slim, lightweight knife, made from excellent materials. Perfect knife for long distance hikers looking for a capable blade with a very low weight and size profile. I'm a long-time Benchmade fan, and this is one of my favorites. Aesthetically, it's a gentleman's (or gentlewoman's) knife, with purple spacers, and not too tactical appearance, but a razor sharp and elegantly contoured modified tanto configuration. If I happen to lose this one on the trail, I will happily pay full price to replace it.

Benchmade 940-1702

This knife is amazing. Light and nimble in the hand, yet sturdy and durable. I have a Benchmade Mini-Griptillian (556) as well as a Barrage (580S) and this is hands down my favorite knife. The Axis lock on it, along with all others just works. Buttery smooth action on opening and closing. I actually find myself playing with the lock from time to time since it's that smooth. The steel (CPM S30V) is super tough. The day I got the knife I was cutting about 30-40 cardboard boxes up, and it was still razor sharp. Yes, it's pricy, but worth its weight in gold.

Awesome knife didn’t have it long

I love this knife. I researched it for almost a year until all the stars aligned that I could purchase. The reverse tanto still blade is beautiful and creates a strong edge for heavy prying like paint can lids. The S30V steel is a perfect material for this knife size. The purple spacers gives it subtle pizzazz complimenting the forest green of the G10 handle. And so lite in my pocket you never would know it’s there which is great because my Buck 110 is like a 10 lbs weight. But much to my chagrin a 2 WEEKS after I bought it my partner and I moved house and I lost my 940 in the scuttle. Oh well I’ll wait till REI has its next sale.

Best general purpose pocket knife

If you don't mind spending a significant amount for top quality, this is the knife to get: Lightweight, handle shape feels good in hand and is easy to orient without looking, one handed opening and closing (with a little practice), handle is not slippery. I also like how it is smaller and curved near the pocket clip. So when you reach into your pocket for keys, it pushes out of the way rather than snagging on your hand. A small detail, but it makes it easy to carry this knife every day.

What a beaut!

Package arrived in 2 days. Mine was brand new, no issues like others noted thinking theirs were from the display. I got a great discount as an REI member which is crazy because benchmade's are rarely on sale or accept coupons. I thought I may want the mini 945 but was really glad i didn't go that route. This is the perfect size for an EDC and its really light. Action with the axis lock was a little stiff out of the box. Overall love this knife's muted forest green G10 with the purple accents. A great throwback to the original.

Just Buy It Already

I originally purchased this knife about 4 years ago, and have carried it on me almost every day since then. I use this at work for all kinds of tasks and also bring it on every hiking/backpacking/camping trip I take, so it sees a ton of use. Most shockingly for me, after all this use and abuse, the blade looks brand new and is STILL SHARP! Don't get me wrong, it could probably use a sharpening, but it is far from dull, still in the realm of safe to use. Overall, a fantastic, well balanced, and incredibly reliable knife. Do yourself a favor and grab one.

940 EXCELLENCE

Read the many good reviews on the 940, add in some beautiful colors ( backspacers and very nicely finished G-10), toss in REI's fantastic customer service, and there you have it. If you don't have a Benchmade 940, or want to add an exceptional exclusive, buy this! You'll be glad you did. Like Men's Wearhouse, I guarantee it.
