Shocked at Poor Quality
I’m shocked by the poor quality of these snowshoes! Only used twice on short trails in soft, fresh powder on well defined trail at a sno-park, and these snowshoes are scratched up terribly. Poorest quality I’ve ever seen! Other than that, they are comfortable, lightweight and the bindings are super easy to use.
Uphill: fantastic. Downhill: downhill
I added MSR shoes recently to climb in the ADK mountains in NY. Ascending, the teeth around the edge of the frame really helped on crusty, icy snow. I like the binding pivot mechanism, and the addition of the Televator into the design is genius. While descending, I found that the 2 strap Posilock bindings didn’t prevent my boots from sliding forward, until the straps were cranked down so tight that they hurt my toes. Would love to see some kind of a toe loop added to the front of the binding...I plan on MacGyvering one myself.
Excellent in most conditions
These snowshoes are perfect for almost all slopes and snow conditions. You might need a more aggressive tread to go up or down a pitch like a black diamond (steep) ski run, but for blues, greens, and flats they work great. They've worked well in one-inch to foot-deep snow, and in powder to crust/ice (extremely deep snow might require more surface area). The bindings are super easy to get into and out of, and hold well in most conditions (on a long, steep downhill I might wish for a binding that goes over the front of the boot's toe area, but if you crank these down enough you mostly stay secure even in those conditions). I had never snowshoed before getting these, and they've made it easy to learn.
Great Buy
Solid. Worth the extra. I wasn’t sure about the metal but it’s way better than the plastic.
Really great bindings ... but
I purchased a pair of these from my local REI store and completely love them .... except for one small thing. The bindings are super easy and really great ... the quick release and the ratchet arrangement is ingenious. But I would strongly recommend that you either extend the length of the bindings as part of the package or offer longer binding straps as an option. I am a larger male with a size 10 1/2 foot. Boots are typically worn when snowshoeing and boots tend to be larger in size (overall) than sneakers, dress shoes, or running shoes. With a 10 1/2 boot it is very difficult to fit into the bindings. I can't imagine anyone with a size 11 or greater being able to use them even if the meet the weight parameters of the snowshoe (which I do). I would strongly suggest that you extend the front binding by at least one inch and the back binding strap by 1 1/2 to 2 inches longer. Again, these are really great snowshoes with a relatively easy set of bindings.
Won't buy again.
I have now bought and used two pairs of 25"" REVO Eplore snowshoes. We live in the country in Northwest Montana and snowshoe 5-6 days per week with our snowshoes. The first pair did not last the first winter when my wife's pair and my pair broke the frames and Ice cleats on the same day. We replaced them with identical snowshoes for this years winter and today 2/3rds of the way through winter they broke exactly as they did a year ago. The frames and rivets are too week for daily use and the Ice cleat breaks off where the two rivets hold it onto the frame. Will move to a better grade of snowshoe.
Nice and stable
This was my first pair of snow shoes that I purchased, so I have nothing to compare them too. However I am hooked! These are technically “men’s” but i loved the width as it felt more stable. i am noticing that some people out of the trails have slightly narrower profiles, but i plan on breaking Trail on my own here in a few weeks. You cannot go wrong with MSRs. Love the grip on the bottom from the various blades. I especially use the toe picks quite a but for climbing up hill.
MSR Revo Explore
Love these new shoes, but on the first use, one of pins came off. It was near the end of a 4 mile outing, and I would expect better performance.
Garbage design, breaks easy
First time using, two miles on flat ground in snow, the pin on the front of the left snowshoe that stabilizes everything sheared off and broke. This was not during rugged or extreme use, but easy going snowshoeing. Snowshoes were sized appropriately for my size, all instructions followed. Just a terrible design that is a weak point and will break easily, as you can also see in several other reviews.
Poor designed heel strap
Overall good snowshoe. I bought it spring 2023, so didn’t use them until 2024. Snow wasn’t great that year, so snowshoeing was limited. This year the snow was great. I’ve done more snowshoeing this year than in recent memory. Brings me to the review. If I had bought them fall of 2023, I would have returned them. The back heel strap is finicky and comes loose after a few minutes. My friendly REI staff suggested a strap. They had no other corrections to what I was doing. I purchased a 20 in rubber strap, placed around the back strap and around my ankle. Works like a charm.
