Perfect for our 2018 Subaru Outback!
We had been looking for a roof box to add to our 2018 Subaru Outback for longer family trips that require additional luggage, etc. We had searched and finally chose this one - it fits perfect! Trunk opens without issues as well. My wife and I are able to install and remove without issue. Highly recommend!
VW Tiguan 2018 Set Review
I purchased the following items for my VW Tiguan 2018: Thule Evo Raise Rail - item # 1519940001 Thule one key system 6 locks: item # 1594340001 Thule Wingbar evo, 47 inch: item # Item # 1519970002 Thule Motion XT L, Titan Glossy - Item # 1172460002 This is a really solid system. I don't keep the cargo box on unless I need it, but the aerobars are on my vehicle at all times. With regards to noise, there is a whistling that I've heard at around 35-50 mph. It's not much and you wont really hear it unless the radio is off and the windows are down. The whistling sound goes away once you get on the highway. Driving with the cargo box on is very stable and no rattling noise for the most part. I did look up while we were driving (70-80 mph) and can see some movement. I was not worried about it because the box is made from ABS plastic and there is some flex to the cargo box. This is my first cargo box so I don't have anything to compare it to, but there is some noise at highway speed. The sound is similar to being on a plane but not as loud. The sound increases the faster you go and starts at around 50 mph. If you drive with the window down and no music you can hear it very clearly. I've also driven in the rain (>400 miles) with the cargo box and rain water did not get in. As for clearance, I was initially worried that keeping the bars on full time would mean that I cannot use my moon roof. This was not an issue. I'm able to raise my moon roof up and open the entire thing without contact with the raised rails. I originally purchased the 43" aerobars because I did not want the extra bit sticking out. However, the bars cannot be installed because there is a 1.5 inch clearance requirement on each side of the car. The 43" is about 2 inch too short. When the cargo box is on, I've positioned it so that the front lip of the cargo box does not go over the top of the windshield. Having the cargo box in this position, I was still able to fully open my rear lift gate without contact. The height of the VW Tiguan with the cross bars installed is 67.5 inches. Adding in the cargo box adds another 16.5" to the height. The Motion XT is measured at 18" but there are dips where the bars go and these are account for about 1.5". Total height of the car + cross bars + cargo box = 84". Finally, I bought the one key system from Thule. I chose the 6 lock option to cover all my locks. The cargo box has 2 locks and each raised rail has a lock each. This was an expensive purchase, but overall I'm happy with it.
Looks fantastic
Was having a hard time deciding between the L and XL version; I have a sedan and though I need some extra space, I also value proportions/ratios and how the roof box would change the overall appearance of the car. Decided to go with the XL version and do not regret. I think anything bigger, would indeed have been too big, but I think XL is the maximum level between look & form for a sedan.
Super easy, light, stylish, and very functional
Early Saturday morning, I arrived at the Store...I was offered assistance to put in the room...took me 5 minutes to install and maybe another 5 minutes to position...2 weeks prior, I was at my local Porsche dealer for recall repairs...they had a more expense cargo box with a semi-permanent mounting system (requiring two people and some mechanical knowledge)...the Parts guy was very unsure of the installation process and an additional $200+ bucks for the Service department...upon leaving the dealer, I ordered Thule Motion online and schedule to pickup at the local REI...best decision, I will update in a couple week...heading up to the mountain tomorrow.
Subaru Crosstrek 2021 Sport, OEM
I believe the Subaru OEM roof box is the Force, might be Propietary, with some hesitation I got the Motion L size, It works with the OEM crossbars but if you are planning to place it as it, as Subaru tells you where to locate the crossbars, it will ""not interfere"", but it will "touch", "kiss" the rear hatch when opened; I needed to re arrange my OEM crossbars, moved forward 2-3 cm and then there is no interference at all with the opened hatch. Barely noticeable as far as wind noise, this thing is huge, easily fits stuff for 2 people (camping gears, sleeping bags, backpacks, dog stuff); roughly is as large as a 2 person sofa couch. The only downside I can think of, it is when not in use, you will need a place to storage, This thing is made beatifully, super shiny black color
Love it so far
I picked this up today and placed them on the Thule Aeroblade 7502 and 7503 cross rails for my ‘19 Forester. It fits perfectly, rides quietly so far at 50mph on the way home, and the rear gate can still open. It took a few simple minutes to twirl the four securements til the click was heard. My fingerprints were visible on the high gloss and my only concern is how hot the black will be in the summer. Other than that, I’ll take it out this weekend and see how it goes. I have to remove it to park in the garage but it’s ok. I think my Forester measured at 84 inches with the box on it so I was a few inches too tall.
Used once, needs a repair already...
Very easy to install onto a standard factory luggage rack. We have a 2017 Chevy Traverse.(+1) Kinda flimsy plastic material makes closing the roof box less than a perfect fit each time. (-1) After one use noticed a rivet had popped on one of the four corner locking mechanisms. Really don't feel like a $800 roof box should need repairs after first use. If that happened already, what lies ahead? (-2) This is an OK product. Not sure I would recommend or purchase again. Possibly a roof bag next time(?). I've purchased Thule products before, this is the first one to disappoint. (Still need to replace a rivet, which sounds simple, but I'm not terribly handy.)
Fits my 2018 CX-5 GT Perfectly
Just picked this up, but I am impressed. It was very easy to lift to the top of my car and the installation couldn't be easier. We had it out of the box and installed in under 5 minutes. Perfect size (L) and the rear hatch is able to open fully without contacting the carrier. The lock/opening mechanism was simple to use and I love the fact that you can access the inside from either side of the car. The black glossy looks great as well. I have noticed very little wind noise. Can't wait to take it out camping this summer!
Stylish and Functional
I purchased this at an REI store to save on the shipping right at closing. A sales associate helped me install it even after they were technically closed which was really cool. Installation was straight forward and it helped that the mounts has a torque indicator that "clicks" when it's grabbed on to your cross bars completely. The black glossy look is really nice. I was concerned that the gloss would eventually get all scratched up compared to a matte finish but if it ever does get to that point, I'll just buy a can of Plastidip and spray the glossy top to Matte and it will look brand new. It's very roomy inside and the locking mechanism of this new model compared to the older Force is much better. I can easily tell if all the locks are engaged before turning the key. I'm using this with the Thule Aeroblade Edge and works perfect for it. I'll be getting the Thule lock to key all the locks together. This is on top of a 2014 Jeep Cherokee Trailhawk and it is the perfect size for it. It obviously adds noise but it's not a massive difference but I don't plan to keep it on all the time as it will diminish my gas mileage.
Robust and Spacious
I purchased the Thule Motion XT L Roof Box specifically to haul extra luggage on a winter cross-country trip. Thule Motion XT fit our Volvo XC90 very well and was simple to install. Although I was considering a larger XL and even XXL version, this Thule Motion XT L was large enough and - in my opinion - looked more proportionate on XC90. With the added height of the roof box, the car needed approximately 7.5 ft of clearance, which is worth considering since few indoor parking spaces are able to accommodate the extra height. As far as the capacity, I was able to fit three large duffle bags: Gregory Stash 95L, Patagonia Blackhole 120L, REI Roadtripper 100L, as well as few more smaller items. Overall, the cargo box performed extremely well during the 3500+ miles, weathering snow, ice and rain. Few times, the temperature dropped to 9F; however, the adverse conditions did not affect the Thule and it remained completely weather proof. The cargo box did not affect fuel economy of the XC90 with speeds up to 70 miles per hour. Over the 70 mph threshold, I started to notice increasing wind noise and the fuel economy took a 10% hit. Thule Motion XT did great and I am very happy with this product. I would recommend it strongly for its build quality, ease of use, and cavernous space.
