Sadly this jacket will be going back. It is awesome for short exposure to rain and foul conditions (30-45 minutes). It is well constructed, has great features and the flexibility of the material is excellent. However, it does not remain dry after long exposure to the rain (60+ minutes); the water came through on the shoulders and arms. I know that it was rain water coming through the material and not perspiration because I was actually standing outside in the rain for 90 minutes. We had to pull our boat out of the river due to flooding and so I was sitting in the boat or standing on the dock for 90 minutes - not too terribly physically demanding.
i am 220lb 6'0, 46 chest / 36-38 waist, i usually wear large and thus, purchased a large. I though it was a little tight in the chest, but kept it and agree with reviews relaying this is a somewhat heavy shell, mild stiffness & stretch, and will definitely keep you dry (i wore it 6+ hours in and out of rain at the Kentucky Oaks and was bone dry after a day in the blowing, cold rain). My final point--this jacket looks very slick, and although it will perform admirably for a cool hike, it is best suited for nasty city weather in which you want to look your best while staying dry.
Bought this Apex Flex jacket for a very wet trip to Ireland! Performed extremely well against rain, sleet, hail and wind! I'm 6'2" with a slim frame...except the dad-bod waist! The large fit perfect with room for a lightweight down jacket under it for warmth. I love the active fit of the jacket, as most other NF softshell jackets are too boxy and short for me! Arm length is longer than usuall but perfect for the taller folks like me! Pit zips are a great feature as it allowed me to dump excess heat with ease and still stay dry as a bone! Worth the price in my opinion!
I bought this jacket for a trip to Iceland. While there, I wore it for excursions as varied as whale-watching, exploring a glacier, and just sight-seeing about Reykjavik. Throughout the trip, with the addition of layers beneath as appropriate, it kept me warm and dry. My only wish would be to have had it in a better fit - I'm a large busted but not obese woman, so I had to buy a men's 2x - which was too long in the sleeves and slimmer in the hips than I would have preferred. Still a great jacket, though.
I ordered this online, after looking for a 3 layer gortex jacket for general hiking/backpacking/roaming the occasional deluge. Rei did not list the weight, but I took a chance, based on the weights of other listed 3 layers. UMMM, it arrived (XL), a beautiful jacket, no doubt, but weighs in at nearly 3 lbs.! This is a great coat if you need a rain in the city coat, but as a hiking layer/backpacking coat, it's too darn heavy. the lining is what does it. sending it back (alas at my expense)
I like this jacket and I got it on good sale. My intent was for mountaineering, though once I got all suited up and tried to put my hood over my helmet I could not move. I would think that North Face would still maintain their roots of business and be mountaineering helmet compatible - unfortunately not for this jacket. The construction and soft shell is nice, and it fit well except the sleeves are too long by 2-3” (I am very average in proportion). I think that the lining over the Gore membrane should help it last a long time. I have not tested it in extreme wet and windy conditions. I am happy with it as a ski jacket.
This jacket works great for the rain, and it truly is waterproof. Everything that is underneath the jacket stays dry. I don't know how you quantify something as windproof, but this jacket holds up great in windy weather too. Being that the jacket is truly waterproof, it's also a bit heavier than a windbreaker, so it wouldn't be advisable to wear while running. I'm sure it would work great for riding a bike in the rain though. One thing to keep in mind, is that it's not to keep a person warm. It's not advertised as such, so it's not misleading. If one is looking to stay dry, and warm during a cold rainy day, find another jacket with insulation.
Bought this during a work trip to OR, and it was perfect. Looks decent enough to wear into the office, waterproofing worked wonders during the constant rain while I was there. Also survived me hiking down a mountain, unfortunately I can't say the same For my shoes....
I would consider this a "medium duty" rain coat, its built as such. Fit in the body is slim, so be aware of that- it wasn't what I wanted but it can accommodate a mid layer without issue. Pit vents are uni-directional, there's no inside pocket which is a disappointment (especially for travel), hood isn't detachable. No issue with rain, obviously it's new so that may change. I'm over 6ft and 195, sleeve length is not an issue at all.
The jacket has a thick softshell-like feel but with 3-layer Gore-Tex protection, it blocks wind, will keep you dry, and even adds a little warmth. The knit interior is super soft to the touch, making the jacket comfortable over a t-shirt, but the exterior is all business. In terms of features, the Apex Flex is fully loaded. You get 3 pockets, a helmet-compatible hood that cinches both in front and around back, pit zips for ventilation, and Velcro cuffs. This jacket is heavier than some of the ultralight options and doesn't pack down nearly as small, but it's a great option for urban use and leisurely outdoor trip. I would recommend it. it.
