Beautifully styled down jacket
I bought this for myself after trying it on in the REI store. This is a beautifully styled jacket, flattering and slenderizing, not like many down jackets which are too poofy and lumpy. I am 5'2", 120 pounds, and the Medium fit perfectly. Also I love the Seattle Mist, a silvery soft color which sets off my white hair well and goes with every outfit I have. Even wore the Magma to a fancy luncheon since the silver color looks dressy with black slacks. Soft, smooth fabric and very warm, yet very lightweight so it can crush into a suitcase and come out unwrinkled. Love it!
REI Jacket
This jackets is very versatile and light weight. I wore it hiking in Yosemite and it kept me warm in the 40 degree weather. We hiked to Taft to watch the sunset and I also wore the next day hiking the Mist Trail. I got warm and took it off and it fit perfectly in my back pack. Unfortunately at some point on the trail I lost this jacket, not sure if it was stolen. I really love it and will be buying it again.
Great jacket
I am a very cold person and I have tried many different coats and didn’t have any luck finding one that kept me warm. I looked all throughout REI and just kept going back to this one. I decided to buy this one and it was worth every single penny. When I walk to class in -7 degree weather I am not cold on my upper body at all, I highly recommend this coat to people who get cold easily or even people who live in cold weather. One thing I saw on a lot of reviews was people complaining about the zipper but I have found you just need to pull down the side with two zippers with the strings and then put in the other zipper. I love this jacket so much!!!!!
Sister's only coat
Bought it for my sister when her house burned down on the Tubbs Fire in Santa Rosa. I can honestly say it is now her favorite (and only) jacket. REI Santa Rosa was a huge help during this time. Many thanks to the Manager and staff.
Great coat but loses feathers
I loved this coat - great fit, great color, very flattering and comfortable. However, after wearing for a week or so, I was losing feathers constantly and noticed some stitching coming out. It was perfect for a 30 degree day to wear on a walk or hike, and kept me warm but still breathable while snowshoeing. I also loved how it adjusted to keep me warm but not hot indoors. However, for the price, I was pretty disappointed with the leaking feathers and returned it.
REI is stepping up their game with this one!
I believe the Magma 850 jacket is a new offering from REI this year, and it's a solid one. If I could fine-tune my rating it would be 4.5 stars, for reasons below, but overall I'm super happy with my choice. I don't often buy things without reading reviews, so hopefully mine helps someone else. SIZING/FIT -- I'm 5'4", size 14, pear/hourglass shaped with a short torso. The L fits me very nicely, and allows for a base layer and hoodie underneath. It falls closer to my hips than my waist, and seems a hair longer in the back. It's not the most flattering coat I tried on, but it's definitely not the least. I also tried on the XL, which was less shapely but would have allowed for a bulkier layer underneath. Overall, it fits great everywhere but the neck -- if I zip it up all the way, it's almost uncomfortably tight and bunched up under my chin. I just leave it unzipped an inch or so wth a neck gaiter or scarf. STYLE DETAILS -- I bought this in "Mineral Water," which is actually a really lovely earthy blue, but the other color choices are underwhelming. Pockets are placed quite high on the front, which is nice for accommodating a waist belt/fanny pack, but if you put anything in them besides your hands it looks pretty silly. WARMTH -- I'm pretty active when outside, but also am warm-blooded in general, so YMMV. But so far, I've been very comfortable at 5-10 degrees (F) wearing a midweight wool base layer, a midweight wool hoodie, and this jacket (plus a hat, scarf, etc). At 20-25 degrees I only need the wool base layer underneath. I've worn this in heavy, wet snow, and it seems to hold up OK for 30-45 mins without losing any loft/warmth-- if I planned to be outside longer than that, I'd throw a shell on top. I'd *love* to see a hooded version of this jacket next season. The fact that it doesn't have a hood was almost a dealbreaker for me, and I would have happily paid more for that option, but I'm glad I took the chance on it anyway. As is, I think this coat is a fantastic value, even at full price.
Fits perfectly
I just bought this jacket & tried on every brand in REI. This fits perfectly in the body & sleeves. It tapers slightly in the middle & looks great. I'm a size 16 & got the XL. I wish it had a hood, but it's plenty warm.
Nice jacket but not durable
Only had it for 2 months and haven’t been taking it for any outdoor activities because the feathers are leaking A LOT! I only used it to go downtown for sightseeing etc. I can’t trust wearing this on a hike because it doesn’t feel durable. I’m returning.
Great jacket... except for feather leakage.
I'm amazed at how light this jacket is because it's just so warm and cozy! I got the "spanish spice" color. The online photo does make it look like a bright red, but I bought it in store and it is definitely more of an orange-red (which I love). I'm 5'1 and about 120 lbs and the XS fits great, plenty of room for layering. The sleeves are a great length for my short arms, and the torso is also a little shorter. The drawstrings at the bottom are very handy, too. The biggest drawback, however, is that I seem to leave a trail of feathers wherever I go! The outer fabric is quite delicate and feathers leak out of the seams. If I'm going to buy a nice down jacket, I expect it to be of good quality so that it will last me a while. Very frustrating, I'm considering returning this to REI.
Not That Warm/Sheds Often
This jacket is kinda warm. I wear it hiking in winter PNW weather and I still wear smart wool and a fleece jacket underneath. The pockets are awesome and the jacket fit is excellent. The down sheds out of the jacket. The jacket has literally no water resistance capacity. Keep this in mind if you buy this item. It’s overall a nice jacket that I use frequently but it has technical limitations and I am unsure of its warmth.
