Typically petite sizes fit women 4'11" to 5'3". Regular sizes fit women 5'4" to 5'8". Tall sizes fit women 5'9" to 5'11".

Reliable jacket!

So, I’ve always wanted to get an REI coat, but was scared off by negative reviews about them not holding up to washes, tearing easily, not being warm enough, fitting strange, etc. I was psyched to get this product and try it for myself. First impressions: I got a medium, which is a size up, and it fits great for layering. I could put a light sweater, fleece, or flannel underneath and still have some room. Probably could not fit a thick fleece or sweatshirt under, though. That said, the fit is definitely feminine. It’s tailored for hips, waist, all that. If you want a more androgynous, rectangular fit, go for the mens version. I like that there are pockets on the inside and the exterior pockets have zippers. The zipper coating will also be very nice in the winter. The sleeves gather at the wrist, which is a nice touch so you can size up but not be drowning in the fabric. Also, the color is stunning. I never would’ve picked that color, but it’s subtle and goes well dressed up or down. It’s a nice touch, and is classy without being boring. Thoughts on usage: As far as warmth goes, this coat is really nice for temperature control. It warms you up quickly, but not so you overheat. It breaks the wind well. It’s very cozy and comfortable to be in, whether hiking or working in the office or outside. It also seems pretty durable. I was very worried about tearing it because it feels delicate, but I was doing restoration work, removing 100 year old rusty nails from a historic house and the jacket was perfect. Didn’t rip or tear, despite being up against splintering wood and jagged nails. Laundering this kind of down jacket was also a major concern. I’m a lazy graduate student and I’ve always been scared of down because I feel like I can’t take care of it. I had to wash it after said restoration work and threw it in my not front-loading washer. I put it on the hand wash setting and it washed up perfectly and dried quickly. I wouldn’t suggest doing that, and I won’t do it again, but in a pinch, a hack job laundering didn’t seem to kill it. All in all, it’s a stylist, effective, easy, reliable jacket. I should mention that I’ve only been able to use it in the autumn months. No rain, light snow, and ~50°F days. I would imagine it will hold up in the winter, but still. If it doesn’t, I’ll update this review then. I suggest buying this coat, and I hope you get as much out of it as I have been.

I really wanted this jacket to work

I bought this jacket 2 weeks ago. And have worn it virtually everyday since I bought it. I live in SLC, and recently we made two trips down south to Escalante and Moab. The weather change was about 40-50 degree swing between day time/night time. Jacket holds up in the sun in 45 degree weather, with a light weight merino wool. However, I was so disappointed every night the sun would go down. I lived in Chicago, and this is not a jacket you wear with with a windchil of -50. But, I was so hoping it wiuld hold up against 20-30 degree weather at night. I tried paring it with a higher rated Merino wool, and my arc teryx mid layer. I was still shivering. I paired with a higher rated merino wool, and just the jacket - since some jackets work better if they sit closer to your body - still cold. I then tried pairing with a merino wool layer and my Kuhl fleece - again still shivering. Ultimately, I had up to 5 layers on at one point, with a blanket in front of a fire- to finally feel warm. This is not what I was expecting considering the price. And 850 fill rating. However, the fit is amazing. The capacity for layering if needed is also great. Its very comfortable, the hood fits and and sits perfectly on my head. This jacket worked well, in the sun and as the sun was going down. I gave it 3 stars due to the fit - but as far as the warmth factor, I am severely disappointed. And sad. I really wanted this jacket to work.

Beautiful colors and warm

I received this product for free from the REI Trailblazers sampling program in exchange for my honest review. I really like the colors of the jacket - perfect for the fall season! Others have complimented the color too. The hood can fit over a climbing helmet and there's a drawstring on the backside. The bottom of the jacket's drawstrings are more on the backside (rather than side or inside the pockets), so the plastic part may get in your way when sitting. The zippers seem pretty sturdy, although I wish it was two-directional. I couldn't pack the jacket into it's own pocket, but it tucks nicely into the hood. Overall a great puffy jacket

Very warm for as low as 20*F

This jacket is very stylish, although I didn't expect the color to be more muted than as pictured. As for use case, it worked wonders during my trip out west from Colorado to New Mexico in the middle of October. I've worn it in windy conditions and temps ranging from 20-40*F with no issue. I did wear a fleece as a layer underneath it solely because I didn't want my skin sticking to the nylon fabric. I didn't feel the need to add any more layers as I was comfortable and I am able to easily adjust the straps to keep the cold out. I'm very glad I was able to pack this - I put it in its stuff pocket and it was small enough to throw it in my carry-on with all the other stuff in there.

Poor quality - insulation degrades over time

I owned this jacket in the previous edition (2022). At first it was great. Still warm for being thinner insulation, packable, breathable. But over time, the insulation started to degrade to the point that you could actually see light come through if you held it up - it basically turned from an insulated jacket to a windbreaker. If I washed it, it was on cold/gentle cycle, and I laid it flat to dry. I called REI and went to a store and was told that because my jacket was over 2 years old (literally 2 years and 2 months), there was nothing I could do. Pretty disappointed as Co-Op member. I won't buy another REI Coop branded jacket again as it doesn't seem durable.

Cute and comfy but tight fit

This jacket feels really nice and will keep you warm, no doubt. The sleeves are long enough to suit us taller gals and I think the extra length in the back will make a lot of plus size girlies happy too! My only qualm really is with the fit, I typically wear a 3x from other popular plus size brands and this jacket barely zipped over my tummy, and definitely not over my chest. I would like to see either a wider range in sizes or an adjustment to the sizing scale, so that this and other products can accommodate the plus size community.

Cozy without being too heavy; great fit

The weather hasn't been cold enough yet for me to wear this, but I have tried it on a few times and have high expectations. I have been looking for a jacket like this for a few years - something short and casual that I can layer with other things in cool weather. Most jackets I have found don't fit around my belly, and if they do, the sleeves are usually too long and there is a lot of extra room in the shoulders. This one is almost a perfect fit!. It is cozy without being heavy, and fits comfortably around my belly and but without being too roomy up top. I am looking forward to wearing this in fall/spring/and mild winter weather instead of layering stuff under my rain jacket like I've been doing for the past several years when I didn't want to wear a full-on winter coat.

Great for a woman with curves

I’m a petite woman (5’3”) with a large bust, a tummy, and round shoulders, which can make jackets hard to fit. I’ve found that REI’s cuts tend to work well for me. I got my normal jacket size - an X-Large - and it fits comfortably with room to layer underneath. Unlike other down jackets I have, this fits very well in the shoulders without tons of extra fabric. The sleeves are a good length on me, and the waist and hip hit pretty well compared to other coats. The cut is trim enough that it’s flattering - I will happily wear this around the city without feeling like I’m in my hiking clothes, but also trust it outside. My favorite feature is the draft collar. It helps seal in some heat without making the hood overly tight. I left this coat packed into it’s pocket for days, and the loft puffed up really quickly. The down baffles stayed evenly stuffed, and I didn’t get cold spots at my elbows like I often do with lightweight down. It’s not the lightest coat out there, but the excellent warmth -to-weight ratio combined with the three very usable pockets mean I’ll be taking it on all my shoulder season trips.

Warm and packable!

I’ve never owned a puffer jacket before this one, but this seemed like the best bang for my buck. Overall, I love it! It packs down well for travel (even though it takes a bit of patience to zip it into its small pocket). It keeps me warm, the hood means I don’t have to pack a hat, and it layers well, both layers underneath and over the top. I got caught in rain in Iceland with this on, and it repelled water well. It does shed some feathers, but I imagine it doesn’t do so more than any other down jacket. I bought some patches to travel with in case I puncture a hole in the jacket, but I don’t feel the need to be overly cautious with the material. I’ve just traveled internationally for two weeks and this has been the perfect companion.
