II 30 years of camping and hiking I've had a lot of sub-par jackets. The Haglofs Roc Spirit is the best featured jacket I have found. The exterior is rugged, sleek and functional with pockets and features in just the right places while remaining simple. I've never seen a hood as perfectly well-fitting with or without a helmet. The hood visor will keep rain off my eyeglasses without obstructing my view. Fit is nearly perfect with sleeves just a bit too long but not really a bother. Interior feels slick and ventilates well with an interior pocket that only European makers ever think about including. It looks unobtrusive and unpretentious with an understated quality that is a combination of the design, the fit, the color, and the material. It's the Volvo of jackets.
I moved from Dallas to Seattle a year and a half ago. I decided it was time for a proper rain jacket. This is perfect for fall and spring. And good for winter with a puffy vest underneath. Sizes run small so step up a size if you want room for layers. And it is lightweight. I was able to get rid of my old raincoat and my ski parka so a significant reduction in closet space. Double zipper in front and arm vents provide ventilation as I walk up to Cap Hill.
Haglofs Roc Spirit jacket. Pros Rain beads on the outside of the fabric, and runs off. It appears that no water soaks into the fabric. I wore it for 6 hours straight, carrying a pack in the mountains, raining off and on, and my sweat mostly disappeared. The pit zips are long. Usually on a day like that I would be dripping with sweat. On exposed summits, in a cold wind, I zipped up the front; it zips up to my lips, with a soft pad against my chin. After I zipped up the pit zips, almost no air came moving through the inside. Very cozy in there. Cons I like the low weight, but it does mean that some usual features are missing. e.g., no Velcro closure on the front: you either zip it up, or leave it open. I buy rain jackets oversize, so I can wear a small pack underneath, on my back. (So, no evaluation of 'fit' and 'looks'.) If I'm bent over a little, on a drizzly day, it works fine, especially if I can close the front at one point with Velcro. But not with the Roc Spirit. Also, few pockets, and the two outside pocket zips are difficult to find and zip/unzip without taking the jacket off. Maybe I will get used to them, but they seem badly placed.
I am not a technical climber. I simply bought the jacket because the features included light 3 ply gore text fabric that I could effectively use in the city as well as when backpacking, an adjustable hood that can accommodate my head w or wo a helmet, a great snug fit, and all round aesthetic looks. In the past month since using the product I haven't been disappointed on any of these counts. I recommend the jacket.
