This was a mistake

I was given the original Light My Fire firestarter about 10 years ago as a gift and I've loved it for years. When I was prepping my gear for a camping trip that I'm going on in a couple of weeks, I realized that I'd lost it. I did some searching and found this newer version and ordered it. After trying it out repeatedly to light fires in our backyard fire pit, I find this one awful. It's too small and the grip on the striker is too small, in fact the striker itself is too small for anything resembling adequate leverage for adult hands. Highly recommend that you search out the original, Light My Fire FireSteel Army Model and order that one instead (as I did last night). It's larger, allows for much better leverage for striking (and, consequently much bigger spark) and is all around easier to use.

Light My FireSteel Scout 2.0 Fire Starter

The fire steel separated from the plastic body on it's first day of use. I put the steel back in it's plastic housing and it seems to fit very snug, but I will still be returning this due to the malfunction. Maybe I got a defective product but I'd like this item to perform flawlessly as it is stored in my emergency bag.

Lots of Sparks!

Hey! I originally bought it just to teach a class. After we (kids and adults) all successfully lit up our tinder nests (with lots of drier lint) we went to coarser wood shavings. The Light My Fire generated enough spark to get them going quickly. The whistle works pretty well too. We heard it out past 100 yards in thick woods. It now sits in my 10 Essentials pouch. Thanks for listening.

No More BIC Lighters For Stove Ignition

Forget the piezo sparker that dies before your stove; forget BIC lighters and cold fingers. The FireSteel Scout will outlast you (and your next 3 stoves) and provide the hot spark you need to get your warm beverage going fast. And...it's TSA and airline friendly. The thumb indents show you how to hold it for a no-fumble strike that creates a hot spark in one stroke.

Light and inexpensive

This works great and is easy to stick in the backpack. I have used it 50 times and it always work. The secret is getting good tinder. So far cottonwood cotten, cat tails, and the tassels on tall grass by the streams in Utah. Learning: if the tinder is not good you are just wasting your time...you can shoot sparks at it all day and it is flame proof.

Good fire starter

I am very pleased with this fire starter. When used properly, it produces more than enough sparks to quickly start a fire. I only wish the rod was a bit longer to allow for a wider range of motion on the down strike, but that's a very minor detail. For the price, I would recommend it.

Strong sparks, quick fires

I bought Light My Fire to keep on me as a minimalist solution to starting campfires while fly fishing in the Utah mountains. I found that it works great ,especially when you have the luxury of bringing some prepared tinder like Vaseline-coated cotton balls to strike over. It works great with naturally occurring tinder, too. This puppy drops some serious sparks that will have you over a nice fire in no time flat.

Like how it works but when returned to store found the one for about the same price that clicks together and takes less space
