So far so...great!

I've always been a loyal fan of Merrell until my most recent pair of Moabs wore out prematurely. But in general I have had good luck with the brand so I thought I'd give these a try. I have only had them for a month so I can't speak to their durability. However these are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned. I wear them around town because I like them so much. With no break-in I took them on a 22KM hike along the Amalfi coast. The trail was rough and rocky and these boots never slipped. At the end of the day I did not have a single blister or hot spot. Looking forward to trying these out on other terrain but so far I am very impressed with the purchase.

Steer Clear of these boots

I bought these in May 2016 for an extended trip to hike New Zealand and South America. Within a few day hikes and on my first multi day hike the boots started to fall apart immediately. The waterproof lining on the front of the shoe is peeling off, the vibram sole is ripping apart and just recently my shoelace just ripped as I was lacing them up. For a product that is more of an investment and supposed to last me years, I'm extremely disappointed in the performance of these shoes. It's frustrating for a hiking boot to fail mid-hike when you can't do anything about it especially halfway around the world. I wouldn't recommend these to anyone else.

Falling apart boots

I hiked in these boots since January 2018, maybe 70 one day hikes for about 700 very easy recreational miles. From the outset they gave me blisters on the heels no matter what socks I wore or how I lace them. They are now at the end of their life because they are falling apart. The seams are opening and the black Vibram is separating off despite multiple attempts at regluing with Barge and with Goop over the past year. The cobbler replaced one of the fabric eyelets about two years ago. Now with multiple seams opening it is time for a different pair of boots, but the next pair will definitely not be Merrells.

Poor quality

I bought these boots for heavy off trail hiking in the mountains. I liked the tread design for steep sidehill traction and the way the laces allow you to get a very secure fit. Unfortunately I had to return them after only three weeks of use. The second trip out I tore two of the cleats out of the arch and the stiching was coming undone on the ankle of the left boot. By the time I returned to my vehicle two cleats were torn completely off and two more were hanging by a thread. Wish I had taken pictures before returning them. REI provided great customer service in finding me the right replacement. Whatever you decide I would buy them from REI.

good boot

I have had these for about 3 months. They are exactly what I wanted. I’m a large man (about 270 lbs) and I needed something to support me and soften the trail. They did the trick. I found a different way to lose them to allow for a slightly wider foot on the left than the right. Everyone has a bigger foot. So once I got that worked out they got great and seem to be holding up well. I am hiking in Arizona where the ground is mostly rocky. By the end of a mile hike in regular shoes it feels like you are walking barefoot and can feel every rock underfoot. Not in these boots though! They are heavy but again it was exactly what I wanted.

OMG - I Didn't Know That Boots Could Feel So Good

I was wearing Merrell hiking sneakers which were excellent, but someone suggested these - and I have to tell you that they are terrific. They tie tight in the middle so that my feet don't ride forward when going downhill (my toes don't hit the front of the boot), and they hold my heels in place in the back of the shoe as I hike uphill. The high boot gives me the support needed to keep my ankles straight on uneven trails. They are wide enough for my wide feet. They hold up very well in the rain and mud. Can you tell I like the product? Great boots. I am a happy camper and customer.

Great Comfort Out of the Box

I owned a pair or Merrell hiking boots for about 12 years and loved them. The only thing that worn out was the tread. I have tried other hiking boots in during this time that were okay but either lacked the same comfort or did not last long. I just bought these boots. I thought I would break them in before I went on hikes but wow. The minute I put these boots on they were comfortable. The more I wear them the more comfort and support I feel. They are high enough to give great leg / ankle support and have a special cross band system that helps keep your feet from sliding in the boot. Basically, it is the way the shoe strings go through additional loops at the bridge of your foot. I would recommend these boots to anyone from the casual boot wearer to hikers.

Hard to get on and off

I actually returned these boots as I had difficulty with getting them on and even harder to remove. I was especially concerned due to an upcoming Appalachian Trail hike where I would be in the boot all day for 10-15 miles. I like the strap system instead of traditional riveted eyelets. But there are only two catches on top to pull the laces out and the tongue does not pull down far enough. My new boots have three catches and are easy on/off. Unfortunate since all my friends and family rave about their light weight Merrill's. Maybe the lightweight boots are more user friendly.

very comfortable boot

Was looking for a new trail boot and liked the options at our local REI store. I had 3 pair in mind when I went in from looking on the website. They only had 2 in the store and they felt more like a shoe boot and were mid size. After talking with the sales rep she pointed me to the Merrell Phaserbound. I tried them on and they felt comfortable in the sole and nice and firm especially in the ankle. I was weary about the way they designed the lace up holes. My concern was how well it would hold up over time and if it were rip from the shoe or the fabric its self. I guess the material used for that is a really durable canvas? The upside to the way they lace the shoe is I am able to get a really nice tight fit. The tongue of the shoe is pretty think, I don't find the shoe laces digging into my leg when walking. I have walked about 10 miles in these boots on concrete, do my yard work in them, and put about 15 miles (5 really muddy trails), and I love the boot. I really could wear them every day they are that comfortable for me. They did feel a little heavy for me at first, but it is by far a better boot than my old ones. After using the boots for awhile, they don't feel heavy anymore. If your not into this brand or looking for a new hiking boot I would recommend at least giving this a try on.

Comfy, but degrade to useless in less than 5 month

Bought these 6 months ago, took 2 week-long hunting trips and hike every other weekend or so and these boots have already lost their waterproofing, the vertical seams on the inside have blown out and the toe cap has started to peel back. I will be taking these back. It's unfortunate because these are light comfy boots but are just not up to snuff of medium intensity use.
