REI has done the best job producing a 2 person tent with the 2 poles umbrella top design for under $100.00 that I have found. I am 6 ft. 170 lbs. and feel that the dimensions, length, width, and height are spot on. The fabric and stitching are excellent and overall design very good. I would consider it a 5 star tent except for 3 issues, pack size, canopy sag by head and feet, and zipper / rain gutter. I reduced the pack size of mine by replacing the 7 and 3 section poles with 13 and 5 section poles and shortened the storage bag. I ellimited the canopy sag at head and feet by adding a guyline loop to seam of rainfly that also attaches to tent canopy near head and feet. I was in a driving rain storm and the door zipper on my tent leaked. Water ran down and filled the rain gutter on the inside of tent once full then spilled onto my sleeping pad. I don't understand why the water passed through the zipper into the tent but didn't pass through the zipper back to the outside, it may be due to the driving rain and exposed zipper area on outside versus standing water and zipper area on inside. Anyway, I had the double zipper pulls located at top of door by positioning them at lowest point of rain gutter the water can pass through to outside and not overflow into tent. This was a severe rain and the rain gutter was the only water issue, no other leaks. This is a excellent tent, I am very pleased with it.
Just used this tent over a weekend by the lake. Must say that it’s lighter than I thought. Easy to set up. Probably took me 3-4 minutes and I occupied talking to someone while setting it up. Didn’t rain and only had some wind so can’t test those out yet. As with any advertised two man tent, this will fit one comfortably with gear. Two persons with small-medium frames should fit ok but, you’ll be close. The double doors are an added plus for two people. Maybe a little heavy for serious backpackers but this will do short hikes.
I bought this for a recent camp in the desert and it was perfect...Super easy to set up and take down with just the right amount of room for one. It is very light weight so I can't really imagine taking it on a winter camp but it only got as cold as 50 degrees when I tested it out and it worked perfectly. There were even some high winds throughout the day and this little tent held up. Perfect for summer camping for one, maybe 2 if you don't mind close quarters.
I really like this tent! Definely recommend for newbie backpackers like me! I've also taken it out for car-camping trips and short hike-ins (like 2 miles) and it's awesome. It's super spacious for one and good space for 2 (we could also fit extra blankets, clothes, and our packs). I would take this guy out for a short backpacking trip but not if I was expecting rain. The rainfly is quite short, there's really no vestibule to speak of, so there's no place for wet shoes or gear. Can't complain though, can't beat the price! May upgrade for a lighter option with a vestibule for long trips.
Best tent for your money. I bought this super simple tent as my first tent. Ive used it 70+ nights. It holds up super well if you take care of it. I have only been in rain a few times and you NEED the footprint, and also wouldn’t want two people in the rain because the sides of the tent do let water in if you touch them. It can handle decent wind. I don’t think it would be happy with wind over 30mph. Zippers, fly, poles, clips, everything has held up super well. Except the tent stakes but you just use a rock and hammer them back straight like everyone else and your fine. Don’t be a prune about the cheap stakes.
Some wind destroyed this camp dome 2. I'm not impressed.
Bought this for my son. I set it up to check it out, and the pole for the rain fly seemed very tight, but it does bend into shape to fit tightly. The first night, there was rain and snow, and he said it was sturdy, snug and waterproof. An excellent value!! Always great to buy at REI.
So bought this a little over 10 days ago to take on an extended kayak trip. It was fantastic. Also light enough to carry on short backpacking trips for about 20% of the cost of a more technical tent. There are no tunnels to slide the poles through wich is fabulous and really makes it easier for just one person setup as the poles don't get hung up. I could set this up in the dark with no flash light in less than 5 minutes. Tent has 2 poles of identical size so there is no way to make the mistake of putting it together wrong Really pleased.
I have been a Girl Scout Leader and Backpacker (with kids aged 11-18) for 27 years, I own over a dozen of these tents, and some of them have been in use going on 10 years now! As for backbacking, we use one tent for 2 people. One packs and carries the tent, the other packs and carries the rainfly and poles, therefore, weight is not an issue. I have read the few complaints that there is not enough room for gear with two people. We never store gear inside the tent anyway,.Backbacks are stored in large black trash bags, outside the tent. Animals don't bother them. EVER. These tents are sturdy, roomy, easy to set up. I will continue to purchase them!
This tent has seen it all. I work for a conservation corps in Colorado, so I basically live out of this tent six months out of the year. I have camped in torrential downpours and never had a drop of water inside the tent, dealt with 30+ mile an hour winds and it never once collapsed on me, and has held up to more than average use with grace. I love this little tent. I am 5'5 / 115 lbs and there is plenty of room to spare.
