Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not what I am looking for Extremely well made with quality materials, but a weird size. All of my friends thought this pack was huge when they saw it and they were shocked that it was only 28 liters. I find the size to be very awkward. It is too large to be a daypack unless you carry a lot of gear, and it is too small to be an overnight pack. The body is very narrow and when you combine that with a top loading pack, it is very difficult to access anything that isn't at the top. It is very comfortable to wear, and I love the suspension system, but everything else about it is inconvenient. I will be returning this pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Day Pack Ever! I initially bought this as a day pack to use for hiking/outdoor adventures, but after my regular Jansport backpack was leaving my shoulders extremely sore/knotted, I started using this pack for my daily commute to and from work (about 2-2.5 hours standing total) and can't live without it now!!! Love this pack and highly recommend it!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A little constricted at the top... Good for day hikes, but a little constricting to get supplies in and out of. I think this is just due to the conformation of the bag (ie: top-loading), but somehow it gets pretty annoying. Otherwise I love the quick-use kangaroo pouch on the front, and it's SUPER comfortable. Great for people who don't mind gear, and owning multiple packs of different sizes. Also seems of great quality, as most REI gear does.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not as great as I had hopes. Yes, this pack is comfortable. But I took in on a short 4 mile hike and realized the two pockets on the side are not large enough to hold my water bottle. The only thing accessible while wearing it are the two zippered pockets on the belt. But they are not deep enough to hold my cell phone. So taking a photo means I have to take off the whole pack.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great small day pack. Too small to carry a sleeping bag and stuff but works for a long day pack and I used it as my carry back when traveling. I had gotten it when I was going to Havasupai and because my main stuff was on a mule I had this for my day pack. So for food, micro towel, change of cloths, solar charger, go pro gear, and a chair it worked great for the ten hours of waiting for my other gear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I like it! Very comfortable and stable for a full day hike with lots of water, food, gear. Like the pole holders for scrambing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Light to pack, but use for the minimalist day hiki The pack was recommended by rei staff, and initially was ok for day use, but on the trail it lacked necessary features such as water bottle pouch was shallow requiring help returning the bottle with help or taking the pack off. The main pack although it has a handy water proof part, the main body was hard to get items out easily. For extended day trekking it was not an ideal pack.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from REI Broke The Mold With This One! I bought this six months ago and love it! It's been with me on rainy hikes in England and blazing hot hikes in Zion NP, and thus far my only qualm is the lack of a built in rain cover. I have been using the REI 40L Duck's Back (Which I bought for a larger pack) it fits just fine and stows nicely in the front pocket. I have a smaller frame that makes pack fitting a bit of a challenge, but this pack fits me like a glove! Yes, 28 L is large for a day pack, but if you hike in all seasons and are a prepare for the worst and hope for the best type of person (layers, rain gear, trekking poles, etc.) you'll be glad you have the extra space! A word of advice: My wide mouth water bottles do fit in the bottle pockets, but getting them in and out is a bit of a struggle with the pack on. I prefer to use a hydration bladder so this isn't a problem for me, but it might be for some!

Does this backpack fit in the overhead compartment of an airplane?

Asked by: towerover
The "generally accepted" carry-on size is 22" x 14" x 9" or 45 linear inches. The shortest length (based on the rigid back panel) for the medium is 21". Depending on how full the Traverse is packed, it may fit in the overhead bins in an airplane.

Is the fabric waterproof?   Looking for a larger (25-35L) day pack that has modest suspension and waterproof coating or fabric. I also want a whistle on the sternum strap and side pockets for water bottles, gear.  Lightweight too! (under 1 lb).

Asked by: nativeplantnut
The Traverse 28 Pack is not made with waterproof/breathable materials. The Mountain Hardwear Scrambler 30 OutDry Pack will be the closest pack that meets your needs.
