Sent back good bags
The quality of these bags looked & felt very good. It is unfortunate that the only sizes are the very large rear pannier and this front pannier size. I need something between those. The other thing was the color: online it appears to be a vibrant orangy red. In natural light, it is a very dull orange. I can't downgrade the bags for manufacturer choices nor color being different than on an electronic display. If these bags suit your needs, I would recommend them.
Love the flexibility and ease of use!
I bought the green pair last summer before heading on a 150 mile bikepacking trip. They held up amazingly along that ride over 2.5 days including some rain showers and wet trails (to which everything stayed dry). They are a tad on the smaller side so I stuffed them to the brim. I like how they have 2 pull strings in case you are really stuffing them full. The mounting system is designed generously and the included shoulder straps are another perk. I ride with at least 1 if not both panniers each time I take my bike out. Usually I keep a hefty U-lock and cable in 1 and some gloves and other accessories in the other. I've also used them to transport some groceries and even beers between locations! My wife also took a liking to them again for the simplicity of mounting/removing them with ease on her rides. The only drawbacks which IMO were not worth deducting 1 star were: This material can scuff a little and show even when I've hosed and sponged off the outside to remove dirt and debris Putting a bluetooth speaker in there muffles the sound more than I would have expected but I just turn the volume up a little louder if desired My rack is made by Topeak and with the mounts of these bags, you cannot get one of Topeak's trunk bags that slide and lock in on the top of their racks. My solution while bikepacking was stuffing my clothes in a compressible dry bag and bungeeing that down to the top of my rack in lieu of a trunk bags adding storage. I suppose you can buy other trunks if you want that storage. I don't see it currently on REIs website but I ran into an Ortlieb trunk roll top bag at an REI garage sale and perhaps that mounts around their panniers but I didn't have a need to justify the purchase. This review was written after owning them for nearly 10 months and riding in Ohio and Pennsylvania spring, summer, fall and a few winter rides and they've seen probably 900 miles of action at different speeds and terrains.
It's cool to ride with an icon
These panniers just exude quality and good design as soon as you pick them up. It's obvious that they're the product of decades of refinement. The size of them was spookily exactly right for what I mostly want to carry (kiddo lunchboxes, blankets, helmets, my work bag). I was worried that the material and the design would mean they don't cinch down in a compact way when they're only partly full, but of course they do...almost as if a team of dedicated Germans had spent years ensuring that every aspect of this thing works perfectly. I sometimes transfer panniers between bikes, and the Ortlieb attachment system makes that possible in like one minute *without tools*. On a tour that would be handy if you needed to change panniers between riders for whatever reason. The photos don't show the inside, but there's a super handy pocket in there so small items are easy to keep track of, and the pocket stores invisibly out of the way when you don't need it. Of course. I have only two complaints: 1. The front straps attach to the body of the bag with a kind of round plastic bauble which gets in the way slightly when you're trying to slide bulky items down into the bag. But I assume there's some kind of genius reason for this that I don't fully appreciate yet. 2. The hard plastic bumpers on the outside of the bag tend to clatter against my rack when I go over potholes (I live in Sacramento; the roads are 40% pothole). Would be great if there were some kind of rubber insert to prevent that, though it's easily solved with some tape.
