So like most people that use headlamps I have read the reviews and looked at all the different brands and spent way too much time deciding which headlamp would work for me. I predominately use mine for working on cars, wood working, getting up to check the kids, putting the dogs out and basically anything and everything that that would require a flashlight. I was mainly concerned with power, comfort and longevity. As with most headlamps, to get that extra power you have to go with a bigger battery pack so I was concerned that working on cars and getting in tight places would be an issue with comfort. Well after extensive use, I can say that if you are looking for a headlamp that will do it all, this is the one to go with. It is powerful, comfortable and has a decent battery life. Now mind you that I use mine for everything and I get it in all kinds of positions and the battery pack has actually acted as a head rest to my surprise. I did take the top strap off because I never had an issue with it sliding down, but kept it just in case. Just on performance and quality you can’t go wrong with this black Diamond product, and the price is what I would place on the mid to higher end (although REI does have it on sale from time to time). Now let me drive your decision home…..I lost my original Icon headlamp on a trip to Sun Peaks way up in Canada. I was totally bummed and my old headlamps just did not cut it in comparison to the Black Diamond, so I went and bought another Icon. Well 6 months later I found that 1st headlamp way under my truck seat. It was working fine, but for some reason had an intermittent issue with the battery pack. Well I emailed Black Diamond and the customer service was outstanding and they went above and beyond what you would typically expect. They took care of my issue so fast that replacement parts were on my doorstep while I was still only looking for an email. So my advice to you if you are looking for a powerful headlamp and are trying to balance power, comfort and cost, also throw Black Diamond customer service in the mix and go with this Icon head lamp, you really can’t go wrong.

I really like the light output of this headlamp, and find it comfortable to wear as the rear battery pack helps balance the light weight in the front. But I have had three of this same headlamp over the last 5 or so years and they have all had problems sealing the battery compartment. Either they don't seal, or they are very difficult to get them to seal properly, with the end result that they all have ended up getting corroded inside the battery compartment and eventually cease to function. I hike in the rain often.

Exceeds all Expectations

I purchased this lamp two or three years ago for my general use light and to use in search and rescue with the fire department that I work for. I have a bad tendency to neglect my equipment and this light spent a few months tied to a tree between camping visits, when I found the light I replaced the batteries and never looked back. I recently requested some replacement parts for my light and was treated like a king throughout the process. If I ever do find a way to break this lamp I will buy another Icon the next day. The performance of the light is also amazing but anyone who halfway does their home work before they buy knows that.

good product but......

I purchased this only for a night backpacking trip. it has great features that others do not like the variable outputs on the white or red lights. it is a bit heavy but you should expect that from something that puts out so much light. I agree with the previous post that it is a good all around working light. like i said in the first sentence i purchased this for night backpacking. I wish the red light was brighter thus the 4 star rating. i do not feel that it is bright enough or goes far enough. i still would recommend this to a friend just because it has good quality and the lumens that it puts out but as for night hiking under the red light i wouldn't use it stick to the white light

2nd one; faulty switch

This is my second one. On the first one the switch failed two weeks after purchase. Good thing I was not out on the trail but just doing a night run. Now, the same thing is happening; the light just cuts off. I did a four hour night hike in October and it was fine. Sadly, I was out night running and it has shut-down about four or five times each run. I have to stop, open the battery pack and shake them around and then turn it back on. However, I'm not sure that is the problem. It might be the wiring harness or the switch? I will take it back and go for the "third time is a charm." On the good; very bright and the third strap keeps it in place over the noggin. The run times are long and the LED light is good. Not too many are this strong.

Head lamp worked great easy to use very bright! My only issue with the headlamp that I bought was the latch on the battery housing cracked after a few days.

Light up the night

I had last years model and was using it up on Rainer September of 2014. It was the brightest headlamp on our summit climb besides the other Icons being used. Then, the new Icon came out. Yeah, I purchased one and was blown away by the new one. I don't notice the weight on my head or on my helmet . What I am focusing on is seeing what I want and need to see. This headlamp does the job and then some. I was up at Muir this last August 2015 and everyone was asking what headlamp I was using. As everyone is getting ready to head out at midnight I am illuminating the entire surroundings as I am looking around. I am over on the upper ledge by the toilets and I am lighting up people and their gear between the climbing rangers hut and the RMI hut. As soon as I turn my head they are back in the dark with this tiny little area from their headlamps. Having the boost mode is nice because you don't need the headlamp to be on full because it is kinda overkill. When you want to see something farther away.. boost that thing up and light it up. I have the revolt and it is a nice lightweight headlamp. But for mountaineering.. Go with the Icon and be blown away with how bright it is. The new lamp also has a different light color than last years.

best all around headlamp on the market

I've used the Icon for over 10 years, 1st & 2nd gen. and it has been and still is the best all around use headlamp on the market. I've owned many brands & models, the Icon still out guns the others. The brightest, most adaptable, dimming, strobe, locking, easy to find in my dark pack, comfortable, waterproof and it uses AA batteries which are the cheapest to purchase. It is a little big but it doesn't bother me, for lighter duty I also use the BD revolt head lamp, but if I'm only taking one I'll grab the Icon every time.

Solid light, worth the extra weight

I first started using this headlamp for night SAR missions, and it performs beautifully. I recently started taking it on glacier climbs, and really appreciating the extra power for blazing the way through the inky dark of a moonless alpine start. The "task" light setting is wonderful for close work or simply around camp. Owning rechargeable AA's and a quality charger is a must though; I fully recharge the batteries after every use, and have never had any issues. Great light, no regrets!

Poor Quality but Good Performer

This headlamp performs great but deteriorates quickly. The housing for the latch on the battery housing is fairly thin plastic (this apparent on inspection) which has broken on me. Additionally, the point where the headlamp attaches to the harness has also failed. Aside from durability issues, this headlamp works well. The four double AA batteries give enough power and longevity to satisfy me. The lack of durability has caused me to trash this headlamp and purchase a different make/model.
