Works as expected

Good kit. I opened a second box with a longer upper part and found gold colored grommets that matched my project. The short box had silver. As one review mentioned, the "cutter" is too dull to cut through anything substantial but a couple seconds with a grinder or some filing to make the end sharp solves this problem. Also worth noting, the half of the grommet with the extension that you lay on the bottom winds up being the side with the finished look (picure 1). The "washer" becomes the less finished looking side (pic 2).

Didn't work on leather!

I needed this grommet kit to create a couple pairs of secure holes at the top edges of a leather rucksack to keep it securely closed with a couple carabiners since the flap over the opening doesn't have a clasp or snap or other closure. The grommets and the tools look fine, BUT the punch is not sharp enough to penetrate leather despite some heavy hammering. It didn't even scratch the surface, just left a pressure indentation. So, I don't know how well the grommet-closure tools work because I never got past the failed efforts to punch through the leather. Now I must suspect that it would not work with thick or tough canvas either. Beware!

Better than hardware store grommets

This is the second grommet kit that i bought, the 1st being from a local hardware store. These grommets are much much better and fit together perfectly. The awling tool is much better than my previous one. For those that complain about the cutting tool, they r right, it doesnt cut thru anything but i have my own cutting tool. Bottom line, if you want good quality grommets that fit together well and secure, this is the best kit!

Not compatible with my REI tent...

This handy little kit was great--except that it contains grommets that are the wrong size for my REI Slip Tent, that has been serving me so well since the late 90s. While the Slip Tent model is no longer available, I assumed that the grommet set sold at REI would be compatible with any REI brand tent. This turns out not to be true. Just a warning to double-check the size of your grommets. The ones on my tent (the only part of the tent to ever give any trouble, by the way) are smaller than the ones in this kit, which are 3/8 inch. This leads to the poles of the tent just slipping right through the grommet, making it useless. I love my tent, and still love REI, just confused as to where to find the right grommet--my local hardware store did not have the right size either.

Save Your Money

The hole punch is not sharp and wouldn't even penetrate a single layer of Tyvek without great difficulty. Also, it is difficult to remove the grommet from the grommet setting tool once the grommet is finally set. I've used other grommet setting kits and this one is decidedly inferior. Save your money. Get something else.

wrong size grommets

I bought this to repair my tent that was missing a metal grommet in one of the corners. The kit comes with 3/8" metal grommets, but the correct size is 5/16". 3/8" is too big and the tent pole will slide through. I got the 5/16" metal grommets and the anvil (part that helps smash the grommet together) from Hobby Lobby for $5. The kit would work if it had the correct size grommet.

This product needs better QC

Ugh! I had to return this because it was... unusable... the die/cutter was not even close to being sharp.

It got my job done.

I needed to use a quarter instead of wood to make the hole. The quarter became not legal tender. Making the hole is the hard part. I was able to get my job completed; however, I hope to never have to use this again.

Cutter not sharp enough

As others have said, the cutter is not sharp enough. In my case, it would not cut through a nylon strap. I bought a set of hole punches at Harbor Freight to complete my project. The grommets and the die for installing them worked well.
