Fits what I don’t want in my cabin
Vehicle: 2018 Subaru Outback with factory retractable crossbars. Before purchasing, I read reviews here on REI.com The front crossbar from my vehicle does not sit far enough forward. The minor problem = The cargo box doesn’t sit far enough forward that I would like, despite adjustability of the box. My hatch will not open all the way. The height of my hatch is set to stop at about 5’5” to allow for .5cm of gap. For me, this is o.k. And does not hinder my way of life (I camp out in the wagon every so often). This item affected my MPG to about -2mpg. I am not going by what the vehicle computer says, but I calculate Distance/Gallonsconsumed (refuel til click) =MPG. Dynamic changes are felt only when higher G forces are achieved (emergency swerving, hard braking, etc) I keep blankets, folding cot, small hammock, duffel bags, empty packages for gear (literally all REI stuff l.m.a.o.!), clothing, footwear, hats, extra toiletries. I chose this item for the 11.5 inch height at the middle, obviously it is not a rectangular box. I was concerned for clearance in my parking garage with an entrance on uneven ground. The limit is 6’10” Max Clearance and I am about 5 to 6 inches under (I am speculating), I am somewhat dwelling on whether I should have gotten a 16” tall Carbonite with 16 cu in of space. The low and relatively flat profile of the box allows for me to see all of the small items I have But a fully stuffed duffel bag, depending on position in the box, you may have to use some force to close the box. Some rearranging will help. Heavy items must not be placed fore or aft of the cross bars. Middle is best. Overall I am satisfied with the item.
Good Amount of Storage in a Low Profile Box
This unit is long. It fits good on my Mazda CX-5. I needed a low profile box as i have an awning in my driveway, which this cleared nicely. Anything taller, it wouldnt have cleared. The box fits well on top of my Mazda, however, there is a bit of overhang in the front, which jeopardized gas mileage. Drove out to Illinois from NJ, and gas mileage was around 26/27 mpg on the highway, when usually its around 31. With the lower profile of the box, room becomes a bit of a problem trying to stuff suitcases and what not into the roof box. Also with the Lo, you lose 2 (on each side) mounting points for tie downs. In the LoPro, it had 4 (on each).
Awesome, quiet, easy to install, and looks great!
I really took my time sizing up which roof box to scoop up for '07 Forester. I found many of the Thule rigs to just be more than I was willing to pay for essentially the same Yakima product, so I narrowed it down to Yakima vs. Inno. My intention is to leave the box on 24/7, so it was really important to me to get something that decimate my gas mileage and was fairly quiet. The Yakima really just ticked the boxes for me, with it's lower price (vs. Inno) and large, low-profile design. The good: +Super quiet, could be the "dimples" in the texture as they claim. My car is loud, though, so take that with a grain of salt. +Didn't absolutely kill my mileage - the gauges on the Forester aren't super precise though so no idea what it did do. +Easy to install - love that you can set and forget the box and take it on and off easily. I highly recommend using the Yakima hitch guide to set your bars up before picking the box up so you can quickly latch it on at the store. +Protection; I had the Yakima FatCat for skis previously, and it will be nice to have them out of sight and clean this year, along with being able to store boots and other dry goods up there. The meh: -The latch is touchy and kinda hard to open until you figure it out. -Plastic, plastic, plastic. I don't love that the mounting hardware is all plastic. I get that the box needs to be, I just would be more comfortable with some sort of metal/alloy arms keeping it locked down. That being said, as long as you're not foolish it's easy to use.
Great fit for Forester
I needed a box that would fit inside a garage. This does. My garage door has a 7' clearance. This measures at about 6'10" on my Forester. I packed ski gear for 5 adults and the 5 for a trip to Tremblant. (The 5 adults were crowded for the 90min they were all in the car.) It had no problem with the hotel garage @7'2" and I could unload it inside. I didn't try the downtown Montreal garage @6'10" posted. Gas mileage dropped from my normal 26.5 with snow tires to 23.5 driving 70 with all that load.
Great fit on my BMW X5
This is my second experience using a roof box. I also have a Thule Ascent 1100 which is now on our other vehicle. My vehicle is the one used for outdoor activities and road trips and we needed something that had more room than our prior box and still maintained a low profile for parking garages. The yakima Skybox Lo met all of our criteria. The look is much nicer and sleek then our Thule box and it is well constructed. I like the carbonate look with the dimples. What really stands out for us is the ease of installation on the roof and how you can lock down the adjustable feet on the track separate from the clamping mechanism. This makes it so much easier to put back on the next time. On Thule you always had to re-adjust the feet every time you put it back on the roof which was more an annoyance and frustration over function of the mechanism. Overall we are pleased with the purchase.
Great low profile box with lots of room but....
I really like this box. I like that I can open it up on either side and that it has anchors to attach a cargo net to hold stuff down. A couple of things that I would change on it would be the handles that are curved out so that you can grasp it and lift it up and anchors on the lid. It should have a more hand friendly thickness to it and not a thin edge like the rest of the lid so that it feels more comfortable to open instead of digging into the hand to open it. Especially when it's high up on the vehicle so you have to press it up which hurts a bit. The second thing I would improve is to add anchors on the lid itself near the edge somewhere so that you can attach the net to so that when you close the lid the net will stretch down to hold things down automatically instead of having to take on and off the net.
'15 Subaru Forester XT
Perfect Fitment on my 2015 Subaru Forester XT Touring. No interference with my rear hatch gate. Have tracked mpg's for a year with the box and have found zero impact. The box is part of my daily-driven set up. The low profile box is the only one on the market that fits on my car while parked in the garage. The low profile does NOT hinder internal cargo space. I am able to fit 4 snowboards (each in their own board bag), two pairs of boots, a fully stuffed backpack and small items like a waxing kit and snow chains, all in one load. I've also carried golf clubs, camping gear, folding chairs, et cetera in the box. Of course by leaving it on for daily use I do give up the panoramic sunroof. I am tall enough to stand on the car floor and reach into the box, but since cargo space is so abundant I often carry a folding step stool to make loading/unloading quick and easy. The step stool also helps protect from anything scratching the car. The width of the box again is a perfect fit for the '15 Forester. The dual-side opening is another thoughtful design feature I utilize for convenience. Solid investment and perfect accessory for the active lifestyle. Expands the cargo capacity while protecting the interior/exterior of the vehicle, and makes it easy to spot in the crowded parking lot. [Two Thumbs]
Great Cargo Box
I borrowed SkyBox 16 from my coworker for Christmas trip to Big Bear. I was great to have all my skiing gear out my trunk. But I notice that if I got one of these cargo boxes I could not drive into my garage. SkyBox Lo Carbonite fixed that problem fit on Forester 2015 and fits in my garage. THERE IS NOT TO MANY CARGO BOXES THAT CAN DO THIS.
Excellent Service
I bought this almost seven years ago for skiing. After hundreds of openings and closings, one of the latches broke. I contacted Yakima, and they are replacing the cargo box. That's excellent service.
Best Cargo Roof Box Ever!
This is my third roof box and so far we love it! Easy to open from either side of our Toyota Highlander. We use occasionally and when on Family trips. We have a low Garage Door so its the only one on the Market at this time that allows me to drive into our Garage without having to remove it. Love the slick design and easy to clean.
