Well made, nice fit
This jacket replaces an ill-fitting coat from another manufacturer. The old coat used velcro to adjust the fit -- not good. This jacket is well made and the slide-in buckles on the side work well to easily get the right fit. My dog is athletic, and the coat does not restrict her movement. She has a very thin coat (nearly bald on her belly), so I wanted a coat for cold and wet conditions. Water beads up on it. To help others trying to figure out size: I first ordered small for my very lean 48-pound Lab. Her 27-inch chest was at the limit for size small and it covered only 7/8 of her back. I exchanged for medium. The new one covers her bum nicely. See photo.
Love It
I bought this coat last year when temperatures were barely above freezing and it was drizzly for days. That doesn't happen much in Texas, so I haven't gotten much use out of the coat, but when we need it, it's great. My dog doesn't mind being wet, or cold, but I figured the combination would be uncomfortable on our hikes. I like how much it covers his underside, which is something you don't see much on cheaper coats. The buckles make it easy to put on, and it's nice that they tuck under on the sides. The outer layer is similar to canvas or duck cloth, so it helps repel water and sticks and stickers, and the inside is fleece. Definitely recommended.
Dog Overcoat
This coat was well made and easy to adjust and put on. However, we returned it as the couple of times that my dog wore it on a run he ended up with a couple of rubbed raw spots from the part of the coat that goes between the front legs. My dog, a boxer/pitbull mix is just too narrow between the legs for this coat. Perhaps just walking around it would not have rubbed but for running it just didn't work.
A perfect fit!
I have a very hard to fit dog... She has a short back, and a stocky girth. Coats that are big enough around are too long, and sit back too far on her shoulders, but coats that are measured by length choke her and won't fasten around her middle. This fits her perfectly!! It's adjustable too, so it will fit my other dog (same length, smaller girth). I love that it covers her chest--this is too often overlooked in dog coats. This is not my first Ruffwear purchase, and it will not be my last!
Sizing is unfortunate
The quality of this overcoat is excellent; however, the sizing leaves something to be desired. My dog is part bulldog, with a thick neck and broad chest. Medium is way too small and large is too long and loose. There is quite a jump between sizes.
Yay ! It fits my rescued greyhounds !!!
According to the measurement data, my dogs should have taken a 'medium'. But when the first coat arrived, it was marginal on my smaller grey and impossible on my larger one. I ordered a size large and bingo! it was perfect for both. So I returned the med. to my REI store and had them order another large, which arrived today. Many thanks from me, Chesley, and Rider.
