Sizing notes

TALL: Some pants, shirts, jackets and parkas are available in tall sizes, which generally means an inseam that is 3 inches longer and a rise that is 1 inch longer, a shirt or jacket body that is 2 inches longer, a parka body that is 2.5 inches longer and sleeves that are 2.5 inches longer than regular sizes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Eight years later, it's still working I am a bit curious about many of these reviews. I have had my Precip jacket since 2007, and, while it's showing its age, it is still working. Among other things, when it begins to wick water through the fabric, it is generally an indicator that the jacket needs cleaning. A mistake many make is to wash it with a laundry detergent. This leaves a residue that will only wick water through the membrane. Clean all waterproof/breathable fabrics with products like NikWax Tech Wash or Atsko's Sportwash. Overtime, it also helps to rinse the jacket in a product like NikWax TX Direct. Like I said, my is eight years old and it is still shedding water.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Green Color More Effective Than Bug Zapper I waited until the last minute to purchase this jacket, so the only color left in size large was the Greenland/Green Lichen color. I had no problems staying dry, but in between the rain storms, flying insects flocked to the light green color on the jacket like it was a fluorescent lighted bug zapper. My husband was wearing the exact same jacket in a grey color, and had no problems with the insects. I removed the jacket and turned it inside out and no longer had a problem with the insects as the interior is white and grey. I am so thankful that R.E.I. has a wonderful return policy, so I was able to return it for a different non-insect-attracting color.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great backup rain jacket I wanted a hooded jacket small enough to bring on every hike for unexpected showers. This stuffs into its own pocket, making a football-shaped bundle about 8"x5". That's bigger than I had hoped, but still leaves room in my waist pack for hat, gloves and snacks. I haven't used it in a downpour, but it has been fine in medium rain. It also works well as an outer shell in colder temperatures. The material is breathable as advertised. Perhaps the best feature is the pit zips, which I didn't see on other products in this price range. I'm withholding one star because I wish it were smaller, but otherwise this has been perfect as a there-when-you-need-it outer layer.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great customer service I ordered a Precip large tall (I'm 6'4" with long arms) but received a regular large instead. However, the regular large fit perfectly with room for layers underneath (I personally prefer a more "athletic" fit rather than a baggy fit). So I called customer service and told them of the mistake, but instead of exchanging I wanted to get refunded the difference between LT and L. The rep was very friendly and immediately granted my request. It was one of the best customer service experiences I have ever had. As for quality, it kept me dry in drizzling rain and safe from gusty winds while biking in Switzerland!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everything We'd Hoped For! My wife and I recently bought these for a 3-week trip through Scandinavia; they meet or exceeded our expectations handsomely; easy to stuff in a backpack; lightweight; didn't look wrinkled and out-of-place when unrolled and worn; and kept us dry and warm when needed. I love the velcro tabs on the cuffs and zipper, and the hood that stays hidden away until needed. The zippered "pit slits" did a great job of regulating the temperature, allowing us to stay dry without overheating. One of our daughters is about to embark on a 4-week journey of her own; guess which article of Mom's clothing she asked to borrow?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent lightweight rain protection I live in Seattle where it always seems to be raining. This is a very lightweight shell which offers superb wetness protection and is beautifully designed for adjustable fit AND breathability. Had mine for years and it doesn't show a speck of wear. I've also worn it in India during monsoon season and was so impressed I bought one for a friend down here. He pointed out a drawback worth mentioning: even though it will keep out the rain, you can still get a little chilly if you're riding a motorcycle because fabric so thin. Of course it wasn't designed for that, but that's the only complaint I'm ever likely to hear.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Perfect for Raining Days Received my first Marmot PreCip jacket as an anniversary present a year ago. So completely satisfied with the jacket, over the past year I have purchased as presents one for my husband, my mother, my father, my sister and recently a second one for myself (to get another color). It is practically "feather" weight and packs easily for travel, yet it is so well made that it will keep you completely dry and a year later still looks like new. I can use it fall, winter and spring in Louisiana. It has also been my "go to" jacket for summer rains in the Colorado mountains, a rainy October trip to New York City and a fall trip to Europe. I love that it is practical and fashionable.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Short Life Span I have an older version (probably 2011/2012). The jacket is comfortable and has a practical design. I didn't use it often since during the first part of this decade we experienced significant drought (and when it does rain, I often forget the jacket). Even spending so much time in a closet, the liner has decayed around the neck and hood and it now allows water to pass enough that my shirt is wet after only 10-15 minutes of exposure. My wife purchased the REI brand jacket of similar design about 6 months before my purchase and uses hers much more (even as a dry weather windbreaker), and it is still running strong. That will be my next purchase.

This product has several reviews stating the liners poor quality and short lifespan. Has this been fixed in the newest model?

Asked by: NWWashington
Marmot has made updates to the liner over several years and has made it more breathable. There are several negative reviews regarding the durability of the liner, but overall we have heard more positive feedback regarding the durability of this jacket than negative feedback. If the jacket is well taken care of, the jacket and the liner should last several years.

how does the hood store in the jacket

Asked by: mikkiyee
The hood stows into the collar on the PreCip Rain Jacket via the Velcro tab on the back. Simply roll the hood into the collar and thread the Velcro tab through the loop and close.

Will this jacket hols up when worn under the weight of a backpack? In particular, I am concerned the straps rubbing on the jacket might wear through the light weight material. I am planning on doing the jmt this summer and expecting some rain.

Asked by: jimm
This jacket is not reinforced on the shoulders in any way, so it may wear out faster in the shoulders than on the rest of the jacket if you will be hiking with it on the JMT.
