Works for 5 bikes
I used this for five bikes, and it works. Three adult bikes and two 20" kids bikes. Did have to buy the extenders for the smaller bikes, no way to do it without those. It is tight, and takes a little time to get them all on, had to adjust some seat heights. Does go in/out okay, takes a little effort, but is nice and secure once in there. No tools necessary as it says, so that is nice. Without the bikes, folds out of the way so minivan back door can open, no problem, does not fold with bikes on it. Would recommend if you need to take five bikes.
Unable to reliably support 5 bikes
The Yakima Full Tilt seemed like the perfect answer for hauling five bikes of differing styles ( we have two full suspension mountain bikes, two aluminum trail bikes, and a kids bike). It takes some time to arrange the bikes but once on they are secure. The major problem is the flimsy hitch stem. In an effort to make this rack adaptable for both 1 1/4 and 2 inch hitches, Yakima used an adapter at the hitch end point, leaving the weight of the rack and bikes supported by a 1" squared stem protruding from the hitch to the rack base (see picture). The result was a pronounced sage when loaded, excessive movement when on the rode, and eventually the stem bending to the point the rack was not usable without taking the bike tires off. I feel Yakama should send out a recall for this rack as it is advertised as a 5 bike carrier but structurally is unable to support 5 bikes of average weight without eventually failing.
Nice features IF you can lift it to install/uninst
I bought this a week ago. Salesman showed me how to install into my 2" hitch. This was to replace a damaged Thule rack from rear end accident. I went to uninstall it today and could not turn the red nob to loosen. Grabbed a neighbor. Then I could not pull it out. So I drove over to REI. The salesperson said there was a grey button on side. Need to depress it while you lift and pull this 41 pound beast out of the hitch. He could do it - I could not. Finally I just returned it. Will keep looking. Nice features but beware if you dont have the hand strength to press the grey lever while bending over and lifting the 41 pound beast out.
Great for 5
I bought this rack last week for my family bike riding/camping at Gettysburg weekend. We have 5 bikes, all 26"-27" wheels. Two hybrids and 3 mountain bikes. This rack carried them all with no problem. 3 of our bikes are step over frames (formerly known as girl frames). I purchased the adapter of these bikes and it worked great (except for the added expense). I love the cls used to hold the bikes in place, at the store I had a hard time closing the Thule rubber staps with holes. Only complaint- with 5 bikes the bike lock won't reach to lock. Maybe I'm doing something wrong...
Feel off while driving
We had a hedge installed on my Toyota sienna minivan for a road trip to California. Use this bike rack for the first time on my van. Previously had used on my husband‘s Tahoe. After going over a bump on the road the bike rack hit the ground and the whole entire bike rack with all the bikes flew off and landed in the road. Damaging the bikes!! We attempted to put the rack back on the hitch, but again with one big bump it fell off again. We had to cram our 5 bikes and the bike rack inside our minivan with our luggage, 5 passengers and golden retriever to drive back to Washington from California. Silver lining- we didn’t have to leave the bikes behind. Expensive purchase. Don’t use on a minivan ever!
Problem with sliding out of hitch
I have had this rack for over a year, and have no trouble with getting 4 bikes on, 5 is tricky. I do have an issue with the rack sliding itself out of the hitch though. There is a small pin type thing that is supposed to lock it in and that seems to fail often, nothing that bolts all the way through. I have a 2 inch hitch and tighten until I can't tighten any more and it still wiggles out. Fortunately I have caught it prior to dropping out. I am looking for another option, will definitely only go with a 2 inch receiver moving forward to lock in better. If I did not have this problem it would be a pretty solid rack.
Yakima full tilt 5
The best for the family that rides or if you have a few friends. My full tilt is a second purchase as the first was damaged from a rear end accidenr. It handled it well but bent the main frame to the point where reliability could be an issue. The insurance replaced it and the new one has some great improvement. New improved frame lashings and an integrated lock where the second bottle opener used to be! It's the perfect rack. Fits 1.5 or 2 inch hitch size. Very strong and worth the price! Looks great on my Outback!
Ok if you don’t fully load it
I bought one of these several years ago when it was the only 5 bike rack on the market. It worked pretty well the few times a year we used it. It often took awhile to load - trying to jam the bikes together in the right combination to get them to fit. Many bikes require an extra bar to get them on the rack. The bigger problem is that it is not really engineered to hold the weight of 5 avg bikes. If you have 5 carbon fiber road bikes or a bunch of little kid bikes, you will be fine. However, five avg aluminum bikes of 25-28lbs each plus a few mounting bars, gets you right to the 150lb max weight. On one trip we discovered that the bikes were hanging low. The tongue of the rack had bent. Yakima replaced it. On the first trip With the replacement, 5 miles from our house, we went over a bump at less than 10mph and I watched the bikes sag again. Same bend in the tongue. It is ridiculous to market a 5 bike rack that can’t support 5 avg bikes. Still waiting for our second replacement. Will now be mounting one bike on the roof.
great rack but it’s not for 5 adult bikes
Like all racks. It’s very difficult to mount the full capacity of bikes as advertised when it comes to these hanging type of racks. The amount of room is not enough. I expected from years of using these racks that the issue continues. So I bought the five bike rack with expectation I can only use for 4 full size bikes. Which this rack does fine. Make sure to stay within the weight limitations of the rack or else you will risk breaking the rack during transport. So don’t just blindly carry any 4 bikes of whatever size. If you want a rack that can carry the amount of bikes as stated. Get a platform rack. They are the only ones which can carry a full size bike with enough room between them. Even with 4 bikes in this rack. The bikes will still touch each other and hit each other during transport. And yes they will scratch. But that’s the nature of this type of rack. So again if you want a rack with a good distance between the bikes because you have some expensive bikes that you don’t want to risk damage than get a platform rack and not this. This rack is more for families with average cost bikes that don’t mind the scratches and just want a rack that can get them from point a to point b.
Not Great for Paticular Bike Owner
I’ve had this rack for almost 4 years. Not a great rack if you’re looking for something easy and you care about your bikes. It works pretty good for bikes with a traditional top tube but very few bikes still have that geometry. So you will have to drop an extra $50 for an adapter for each bike with a sloping top tube and it doesn’t secure the bikes nearly as well. That adds $150-$250 to the cost and at the point you could have considered a tray rack. It’s a puzzle to get more then 3 bikes on and I’ve never got 5 on. My biggest peeve is that if bikes make any contact with each other they will rub the paint off and damage the components. Our bikes have bare patches all over them. I’m pretty particular about my bikes and I’m okay with slapping the beach cruisers on here but I won’t carry my MTB or Road bike on here if there are more then two any more.
