  • Polyester headband wicks moisture away from your brow and speeds the evaporation process
  • Rear toggle fine-tunes the fit of the REI Paddler's hat

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Paddling Hat This is my favorite kayaking hat. It ventilates well in the Florida heat, looks good, and the brim holds its shape, even in a strong breeze. Fit can be problematic since only two sizes are provided. Even with the hat adjustments, I'm between sizes, so the S/M is too snug and the L/XL is too big. I liked the hat so much that I kept the S/M and got a hat stretcher to obtain a comfortable fit. Hopefully REI will offer more sizes in the future, since fit is everything. I have used mine for a year and it has held up well, with the exception of the chin strap tensioner which is just a small piece of neoprene. I replaced it with a cord-lock.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hat - back brim a little wide This hat has performed well over the past two years of frequent summer use. The foam toggle is lame. My issue with the hat is the size of the back brim. If I want to look any higher than straight ahead, the back brim jams into whatever is back there - my back, life jacket, day pack or backpack. Consequently, I am usually found walking/hiking/paddling with the back brim flipped up. it stays up beautifully, but that defeats the purpose of a wide brim. I do wish there was a little more mesh. All that said, it's the best thing that I have been able to find. I really appreciate that the brim maintains is shape and doesn't flop in my face.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from my go to hat i purchased this hat as my go to hat for spring, fall & summer hikes and it has performed admirably. I especially like that it breathes well because the summer heat here in So. Cal. can be daunting. since i perspire heavily i have washed it a couple of times in the washing machine, as apposed to hand washing, and it seems to be holding up well. The only thing that might be a negative would be the strap adjustment thingy :p that goes on the cord. it's made of flimsy sponge material and after a couple of uses it's basically worthless. but that is nothing that an after market product can't take care of cheaply. it did hold up against some constant light drizzle but i wouldn't take it out when rain is expected.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEST HAT IN THE WORLD I bought this hat five (5) years ago and it my go to had for all the hiking I do. The hat has held up perfectly. No tears to the mesh, the bungee is still functioning and the chin strap is in tact and slide is fully functioning. There are no tears in the fabric. It is washed only as needed but some stains have not come out. The brim it not perfectly flat but it does not deter me from the wearing. Except for the headband being a little wonky now (won't stay flat against my forehead anymore) I think this is the best hat I have ever owned. I own it in light beige so yesterday I was looking at the new version in the darker color. I like the new color, might hide dirt better. In addition to hiking, I wear it for yard work as well as my daily dog walking. Yes, I'm that lady in the neighborhood with the big hat. :-)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great for hiking. I agree with some of the other reviewers. Would have liked a tan that the picture looks like. The olive color isn't bad though. the foam toggle on the chin strap is a bit flimsy. I did, as one reviewer mentioned, buy some toggle locks. I will replace it when it wears out. The foam toggle is a bit awkward to tighten or loosen quickly do I may replace sooner. The venting on the sides is better than most hats which is a good thing. Brim has excellent coverage. I bought this hat to replace my old hiking one that I misplaced and even though it is made for water activities it is an excellent hiking hat. The toggle in the back ensures good fit. Only downgraded it due to lack of color I thought it was in the picture and cheap chin strap toggle. Other than that I like it a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This hat is comfortable This hat does it all. Best hat that I ever had. It's comfortable and light weight . I've had mine for 2 years and it still in great shape. I use mine for work every day and when going hiking or working outside on my property. rain or shine, it protects you and holds it shape. when dirty, just put it in the washing machine with spot cleaner, lay out flat to dry. and it's like a new hat again. I have had more expensive brim hats that are thicker and not as comfortable in the past, and most cant be used in rain or you cant wash them in a washing machine without loosing the brim's shape . I highly recommend this hat to anyone, for anything, you will not be disappointed. as for the strap , I took mine off and had no problem with it staying on my head. even when windy or rainy days.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good hat - could be perfect Good hat. Agree 100% with Space Coyote's comments. Pros: Cool, nice wide brim which is wider than competitor's offerings, packable, adjustable to head size. Cons: chin strap cinch is inadequate, sweat band does not stay in place. It would be the perfect hat by improving the issues listed as cons and adding a hide-away sun flap like the REI Sahara hat has. I own one of each, and REI could combine the best options of both and offer one perfect hat instead of two good hats.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from South America "no problem" My wife and I were looking for a hat to wear on our trip to the Colombian Andies so we bought a couple of Paddler's hats. They performed beyond our expectations as far as shielding us from the sun and countless rain showers. The hat folds flat for packing in luggage and also on vehicle doors when hung from the door opening lever. This is a great product at a reasonable price

Do you think it will fit a woman size Small?

Asked by: Nor Cal
No. I was at REI yesterday to try on this hat. The S/M was just a tiny bit too large and the kids 7-14yrs version of the Paddler (yes, I went there) was too tight. If you have a tiny head like I do, this hat won't fit properly. I wish this came in individual sizes like the Explorer!

My size falls in-between the S/M and the L/xL hats. Should I get the smaller and stretch the head band a bit, or try shrinking the larger? The larger does also seem to have a brim too large, would that shrink as well?

Asked by: lweinberg
If you are between sizes in the REI Paddler's Hat, we would recommend sizing up.
