As a Boy Scout 30 odd years ago (at age 11) I weighed 78 pounds. The recommended pack weight for a boy that age at that time was 25% of body weight. In my example: a backpack weight with everything he will carry should be about 20 pounds. A chair in the case of hiking would be too much additional weight. If your boy will be hiking any distance greater than 2 miles, I would go with the 10 essentials and call it good. A 19 year old man can carry 50% of his body weight up to 20 miles in the military, but not without strain. Our men in uniform don't carry chairs, unless vehicle delivered to the location. As an older man of 45 and 220 pounds, I can carry about 40% or 80 pounds reliably and will substitute a chair with a lightweight hammock every time. Cheers!
