Rated 5 out of 5 by from Terrific We've had a set of three chairs for three seasons now, and couldn't be happier. They're light, set up in a flash, and completely comfortable. You can slouch all the way down and the back will support your head, for the ultimate in deck or lawn loafing. Some comparable products force you into a rather upright position, but we enjoy having the option to droop and melt into whatever pose is most comfortable. The holder on the right can accommodate all of our drinks glasses (some are on the large side) while the one on the left is useful for phones or whatever. These chairs also dry quickly. I can't readily think of a way to improve these chairs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Nice chairs but not durable, strange cup holders I like these chairs, but they're just not very durable. I take good care of my gear, and the front grommets are already cracking with minimal use over two years. The hardware holding the legs together at their pivot points also looks about to shear as described by other reviewers. The cup holders are also a bit weird--one is useless, and you need some sort of koozie for the best shot at your drink not tipping over in the other. I was surprised that the REI salesperson said I was out of luck when I inquired about repair or replacement. I would expect chairs like this to come from a discount store, not REI.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great chair I'm small, and I don't usually fit well in this style of chair. They just swallow me up, and end up being uncomfotable. But this one works very well for me. Supportive enough to be comfortable, but I can still recline, relax, or curl up in this chair. And it feels stable, not wobbly. My average sized husband seems to fit pretty well in the chair too. The cup holders are handy for miscellaneous items and beverages with lids. But an open can of beer or soda could easily be spilled, so caution is required with open containers. This style of chair I think is natrually a little bulky, but this one is actually smaller (both stowed and deployed) than several other similar chairs.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Weak Point(s): Rivets I have two Mesh Chairs, which, according to REI, are structurally the same as the X Chair. There are rivets, about 1-1/2" long, that create pivots where the diagonal legs cross. Normal use causes the legs to saw through the rivets. On one of my chairs, the front rivet snapped. When the front rivet snaps, the chair still stands. But, I don't know what happens if one rivet snapping puts enough strain on the other rivets to possibly have multiple ones snap together... ...and if the chair collapses. The rivets appear to be steel. There's not enough clearance to be able to look at the wear points to know when a rivet is about to snap. In the attached picture, you can see the grooves that formed. The rivet snapped at one of the grooves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid camping chair Can't go wrong with this chair. It's comfortable, has pockets on both arms: one's a basic beverage holder and the other is more of a pouch that folds under the arm via velcro. It got rained on pretty good one morning too but dried out quickly. Bottomline, I'm a 260lb dude that isn't always satisfied with camping chairs, but this one is great. Went back and got a few more after my first trip with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Comfortable Chairs These chairs are comfortable and the fabric/mesh seems durable. I have used these mostly for car camping and general recreational uses. The cup holders are useless becuase of their size, I assume they wanted to make the holders compatible with nalgenes - but in doing so, the holders are way to big for a bottle or can and if you're not careful it will tip over. The holder is large enough for a 12oz can to lay on its good! There is a holder on the other arm that goes under the arm rest and velcros up when not in use, but it also doesn't work very well, because there is nothing to support this cup holder, so if you put a full bottle or can into it, it sways under the arm rest and will dump out some of your drink - it's only good for drinks with lids and is just kind of awkward.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Solid Chair My wife bought me the chairs for Fathers Day and I have alrady used them a couple of times. Once at an outdoor concert and another time for a Braves game. What I especially like about the chairs is the screen mesh that literally lets the breeze flow through and keep you cool. They were specifically purchased for the beach, but can be used at any oautdoor event. They are very sturdy and I expect them to last quite a while. Highly recommend.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Designed All Around The design was well thought out from the bag to the chair. The attention to detail is what I liked. The bag opening is reenforced to prevent the stitching from coming apart and the inside seam is covered with material so the edge of the bag material does not get caught on the chair as it slides in. The design of the chair is also well done as that is the key part of the whole purchase. The is a sizable cup/bottle holder that I'm testing out with a cold one as I write this review and another pouch on the left side for stuff that you can hide under the arm rest using velcro when not required. The seat is well ventilated reenforced mesh to keep me cool on those hot CA days. The height of the chair is also just right for me (5'10") and my wife (5'3"). The best part is that it comes with the REI warranty so if I have a problem, it's easy to solve. I'll come back in a few months and let you know how it worked out.

Questions & Answers

How small does this chair pack down to? I'm looking for a good chair for my 11 year old son for Boy Scout. Something he can hang on the outside of backpack.

Asked by: texasjmd
As a Boy Scout 30 odd years ago (at age 11) I weighed 78 pounds. The recommended pack weight for a boy that age at that time was 25% of body weight. In my example: a backpack weight with everything he will carry should be about 20 pounds. A chair in the case of hiking would be too much additional weight. If your boy will be hiking any distance greater than 2 miles, I would go with the 10 essentials and call it good. A 19 year old man can carry 50% of his body weight up to 20 miles in the military, but not without strain. Our men in uniform don't carry chairs, unless vehicle delivered to the location. As an older man of 45 and 220 pounds, I can carry about 40% or 80 pounds reliably and will substitute a chair with a lightweight hammock every time. Cheers!

The fact that this mesh is thin for drying, does that mean it will burn easier if sparks from the fire hit it? Seems like it would and very quickly you would have a chair with many small holes in it. Thoughts?

Asked by: K Taylor
Embers from a fire landing on the mesh can create holes.
