Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my best purchases ever! I will never hike or camp without this! I took this backpacking in Point Reyes National Seashore, because the campground website warned people that mice come into the bear boxes at night. I got the small size and was easily able to fit all of my food and toiletries into the bag. Sure enough, each morning, I woke up to little mice sleeping in their little homemade beds NEXT TO my food, but this rat sack kept them completely away from damaging anything! My campground neighbors lost their food to vermin, but none of mine was touched at all, thanks to this sack. I will never camp without it again! It is worth its weight in your pack for sure!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Keeps the mice and other gnawing critters at bay I bought two large bags for my wife and I. Surprisingly we were able fit all of our food in one bag on a 5 day hike on the AT. Even using the bear cables some hikers had there food bags chewed into. We let several other couples borrow our spare and they were pleased with it as well. I highly recommend using one. One concern I read in another review was that they were afraid it would rub a whole in their pack. We had the same concern so we packed it in the plastic sleeve it was shipped in to keep it from rubbing.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good lightweight option The ratsack works great as a bear hang bag. keeps the little critters out which was my problem with bear hangs. I use this in special situations where the trees are good for bear hangs. it holds about 800ci in the bag. which is much more than my solo bear canister holds(450ci). I still find myself using the bear canister a lot for ease of use and anytime i am not given good bear hang trees or above treeline. this bag said it weighs 6oz but actually weighs closer to 9oz. still a great weight for a good food storage option. gets pretty small when not in use too. the bag is not very forgiving when in your backpack. I fear it could rub a hole in my backpack as i hike since it is a metal bag. If you are looking for a lightweight option to protect your hang from small animals, and you feel very comfortible with bear hangs. then this is a great option.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Armored bags keep out critters I backpack exclusively in the Grand Canyon. Many areas have so much traffic that it is very difficult to repel mice, ringtail cats, ravens and other critters from invading food bags. I owned the rat sack before REI offered it for sale. I have never lost food since I started using it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Does the job perfectly After a few trips into the Smoky's, I discovered that mice were more than happy to get into my food bag suspended from the bear cables. Chewing into everything having a few bites and moving on to the next item. After buying the ratsack, I have no further issues, but my buddies who didn't purchase one always have problems. It only takes one trip where their food gets eaten and mine is safe before they buy one. It definitely keeps your food and other items that smell safe from mice in the smokies (And the mice in the smokies are smart as heck).

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wire meshing could use some work Bought this for our Grand Canyon backpacking trip and used it for 7 days and 6 nights in the canyon. Placed my ziplocked food, snacks, and toiletries in dry sacks, into the mesh bag, and hung from various places along our route. The wire mesh was less rigid then a similar product my friends bought and one of my dry sacks got chewed and ruined when I had to hang it in a tree. The rodent had forced the wire to one side to gnaw on the dry sack but only got away with making a small hole in one of my muesli bags and only a tiny bit of muesli fell out. The mesh on this bag is also a little bit sharper than expected so both of my dry bags left the trip with holes in them. Overall it did the trick as I didn't lose more than a few sprinkles of oats but sadly I have to buy a new set of dry sacks.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One and only ratsack Purchased this for a 5 day Grand Canyon hike (hermit/tonto/bright angel) There are NO bear boxes to store food so the rat sack is a MUST...lots of sneaky nocturnal critters around. The thing worked great !....the only issue we had was that "something" was able to "somehow" chew some small holes in some oatmeal packages...yet I do not blame the rat sack. If you are going somewhere with no storage DEFINATELY need one of these.

Will these bags protect against raccoons?  Thay are nt your average rodent.

Asked by: Ricoh
The Ratsack Cache Food Storage Bag will protect against raccoons. It's best to hang it out of the raccoon's reach if possible. Also be sure to lash the bag to something so the animal does not take the bag.
