Rated 5 out of 5 by from Light, Compact, Strong I am an AMGA certified ski guide and AIARE avalanche course instructor in Southwest Colorado. I have been using the BCA B-1 EXT shovel for several years and it has become my daily go-to shovel for backcountry skiing, winter mountaineering, and alpine climbing. The light weight (just over a pound!) and very compact shape make this shovel a breeze to pack and carry. It is also well made and strong. I have put it through the wringer digging snow profiles, practicing companion rescue, and digging out tent platforms and it has held up great in years of use. All in all, I have been very happy with this shovel and I would recommend it to others for backcountry skiing and winter climbing.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Almost the perfect shovel. Good Shovel. Good size and with the extension it doesn't kill your back if you're shovelling for an extended period of time. I build quite a few jumps and this thing cuts through all types of snow really well. I'm not worried its going to break on me. Also great for getting the sled unstuck. I get stuck a lot so it really pulls it's weight there. Only thing is, it won't shovel for you...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Dust to Crust This lightweight and easily packable gem made back country snow-den camping easy. The shovel cuts nicely through dense snow and fairs very well with ice layers. The head is a nice size for snow weight quick digging, shaping snow, and packability. The edges stayed sharp, even thru ice, and the material without bending/warping. The handle looks cheesy but it is very strong and appropriately shaped for the tool itself. Cons: With a serious dig, the adjustable handle/shovel head locking mechanisms allow snow into shovel making for a very difficult time detaching the shovel pieces (would be nearly impossible if you had frozen fingers and/or were without a tree/rock to break the ice out of the locking mechanisms against).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very happy! I've only used this shovel once so far, but for quite a job of clearing a large space for the tent on the side of Mt Shasta in a nasty storm. It went right through the hard pack, didn't mind the ice, no bends, no breaks (my last one broke on me, different brand) - and it's pretty darn light. Well built, worth the money.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from very light shovel I picked one up because it is so light. It breaks down into 3 pieces, easy to carry. And it can move snow!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Functional, tough and compact Used it the moment I purchased it getting someone out of a snow berm. This lives in my car as it beyond essential during winter travel. This is also on my for backcountry adventures...ya never know.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Well Designed Shovel Used this shovel over the weekend to build an igloo. It is very effective and appears to be far more durable than the inexpensive aluminum snow shovels (I have already broken two). Note the dimensions - it is smaller in real life than you may think, particularly the handle length. It is also extremely light. It has an elliptical handle cross section that I appreciate, and the orange tipped handle is a nice touch.
