The previous concerns about screw anchoring and the seat buckle have been addressed by the Elie folks. After a lot of comparing similar sized boats in this price range, the Elie Sound 100 stood out among the others. Lots of extras, one of the most comfortable seats in the industry, and a state of the art polystyrene hull. When the REI anniversary sale came around, it was time to step up. If you're looking in this price range for a similar sized kayak, I don't think there's a better value.

I have to say I have mixed feelings about this kayak. It is a great design, has ample day trip storage, great stability, and all the basics you could need. However first time in the water 1 mile out my left side screws for my foot peg fell out. About a half hour later my right side screw fell out! Making the foot braces unstable and small amounts of water to get in the boat. Very frustrating. I carry supplies for such occasions and after about 3 miles I was able to stop and repair. Now to top off my frustration once on the water again a few miles later my seat plastic buckle for the seat broke leaving me virtually sleeping in the thing! That was the final straw trip was over. I was able to fix it with some extra Yakima straps I had. They are now metal and work better than the factory! Other than some poor quality parts I do enjoy this kayak but in hind site would of got the 120xe for a bit more speed.

Perfect for relaxing fun!

Did the research and decided on this. Lucked out and nabbed one from the downtown Portland store, then another from the Clackamas store in the same day. My girlfriend and myself rented kayaks one weekend and found it delightful, but they were longer and heavier than these. The difference is amazing! These are very stable, the V-hull design allows it to glide easily in the water, the seats are comfortable and easy to lean back to kick the foot up and float happily. The buckles for the seat straps are no different than what you'd find on a backpack. We're both around 120lbs and they're solid, no breaking or signs of stress on them. The foot rests are easy to adjust and though they seem like cheap plastic, they're solid also. The bolts for them are holding well and no leaks at all. I love having the pads on the side. For the extra money it's a nice addition to keep from sore knees, and they also help to keep the paddle rested nicely without rolling around. The fin on the back works wonders for keeping it going straight as well, and it "completes the look" of the kayak. The vibrant yellow sure catches attention when we're driving by people too! These are also tough boats. I rammed a log and it didn't even scratch it! The seams are smooth and overall a quality job was done in making it. Glad I didn't buy a cheap $300 boat! This will last for years and keep me happy.

Nice entry level kayak

I bought this kayak about a year ago and really like it. I'm a small woman and I like the fact that I can lift this kayak on and off the roof of my SUV by myself if necessary. Unfortunately, the adjustable seat buckle broke even before I got it into the water the first time, don't know how or when. Fortunately I noticed before hauling it to the lake and was able to "fix" it by tying the straps to a spare carabiner I had. The design has lots of handy features like a bottle holder that actually holds and some room behind the seat for stuff you want out of the way but handy. If I had it to do over, I would buy this kayak again.

Great Boat; Average Paddler

Just got back from the first voyage up here in Folsom. Fist off; I am six three - 240; 37 in waist; I am a big guy; this kayak fits me perfectly with room to spare; the padding for the knees and the seat is just super comfy (I was out on the water for 3 hours) - I have been kayaking my whole life; this is by far the best Kayak I have owned. It tracked well. Not fast but I did not expect it too. Back hatch and features on the Kayak are great. (note the water bottle holder is really just for a small water bottle however the dry-sack on the table will hold a 1.5 l nal with the top off)

Perfect kayak for me

I purchased this kayak with the intention of recreational paddling on calm water with my dog. I wanted a 10' kayak with a large enough opening to hold me (5'3" 120lbs) and my 40lb dog. I was a little nervous about my purchase after reading the other reviews, but happily I haven't had any of the problems the other reviewers reported. Five different people have used the kayak (from my size up to 6' 200lbs). My brother-in-law owns 2 other 10' kayaks, and he reports that this one is more stable. It's heavier than the ones he owns, but I can carry it by myself. The kayak tracks very well, and even with a dog who moves around and sometimes leans over the side to get a drink, the boat has been very stable. I am very pleased with this kayak.

My first kayak

This is my first kayak. So I don't have a ton to compare it with, but I liked all the features, like 2 water bottle holders, and the built in dry bag in front for things like cell phones, and the storage in the back. Plus the bright yellow color is pretty awesome. Been out half a dozen times already.

Took the boat out yesterday and had a blast with it! Tracks very well. Had plenty of storage for lunches and a few beers! Was easy to lift and put on my car top rack.

Excellent if you accept them for what they are

I bought these kayaks as a starter for my wife and me. They are extremely stable. Even in a boat it has been stable the whole way. They have quite a bit of storage and the self in the front is extremely useful. They aren't very fast, but they are made for speed, their made for stability. I believe that the problems mentioned in other reviews have been addressed. I would recommend this kayak (especially at this price point) for anybody wanting to get into it.

Great kayak for calm waters

I had been wanting to get into kayaking for a few years but never had the room to be able to store it. After I recently bought a house I now had the extra storage space to be able to keep it in the house. I looked at many different kayaks but settled on the Elie Sound 100XE due to it being both affordable and having a lot of features. I'm 6'0'' and with the foot pads adjusted all the way my legs have plenty of room. The seat is nice and padded and can be adjusted some. You will appreciate a good seat if you are out there for hours, some cheap ones just have plastic. The cup holder fits a regular water bottle just fine. It has a screw off storage bag in front, great for putting your cell phone in to keep it dry. The rear trunk has a sealed bulkhead so you don't have to worry about water splashing and getting inside. I bring my expensive DSLR with me so keeping it dry in the trunk is a must. The sides of the cockpit are also padded which is nice for your knees. It has all kinds of bungee straps on it which I don't use but I assume it could hold a lot of gear. Due to a 10 foot kayak being on the smaller side this is best for calm waters. I took it out in choppy water once but it was a waste of time, I got wet and could hardly move forward. However it's small size is an advantage for maneuverability. I have a 2009 Toyota Matrix that I used to move the kayak. I don't have a roof rack yet so I have been using 3 pool noodles as pads under the kayak and 3 ratcheting straps to hold it down. Works fine for now, might not like that for long trips though. Also I bought this kayak when they had a 20% sale in June so look out for the next sale, saved me $100.
