This sleep pad is amazing! I just can't sleep on a flat foam or ridgerest-type pad anymore-- it hurts my hips. But on this camp bed, my hips don't even touch the ground. I love being able to easily adjust the air pressure to conform perfectly to my body's need for comfort, and it keeps me warm in cold conditions. It is perfect for car camping. I have used it on a 3 day backpacking trip too. It is a little wider than some other pads, a little heavier, but I would not be able to camp or backpack without it. I am more than willing to sacrifice a little extra weight for the extreme comfort this bed provides.
With an aging body (61 years and counting), it was time to replace the two, thinner ThermaRests I had used stacked, one on top of the other. I considered the 3" pad, but the 2.5" kept my shoulder and hip off the floor when trying it out in the store. If I weighed more than my 150 pounds, 3" would have been necessary. The first night I used it, I felt the amount it filled itself was too little. The second night, I blew some more air into it and I had a good night's sleep. I wish I could roll it tighter, but I can still fit it into its sack. Because of this and since I do not plan to backpack it, I can live with a slightly bulkier rolled-up pad than I am used to.
We put these on top of the mattress in our popup camper (the mattress was awful) and the REI camp bed actually makes the popup mattress bearable! Provides surprising amount of support. I would also use this for car camping in a tent though I would purchase the 25" wide pad for that. We are 58 y.o. and have more crinks in our bodies than when we were young, but I am pretty sure the 2.5" thick pad would work for us on the ground too! (I am comparing it to very thin and thin thermarest pads from my past.) I can roll them up with only 2 passes (and this on top of the squishy popup camper mattress)- well worth it for a good night's sleep!
Bought summer 2010 for Alaska fly-in raft trip. Overall have used 25-30 nights, none below freezing. I'm 5'6", 150 lbs. At first, typically let it self inflate, then added from lungs as much as I could. By morning, the pad was always nearly flat from under shoulder to hips, and full and tight at feet. After first week of use, I ended up folding it in half, putting the whole pad partially inflated under my torso, & using clothes to insulate legs & feet. It was not leaking, just redistributing pressure internally. For me, much of bulk, length, weight, expense was a waste. Will try a new "pressure map" pad before next extended trip. Don't see"shorty" pads on the market anymore?
I absolutely love this camp pad. Before this camp pad I had been subjected to the normal "average" camp pads and was not intrigued. I would usually end up having sleepless nights due to lack of comfort and the feel of debris in my back. Now with the REI camp pad I am a happy camper. It is extremely easy to use, all you have to do is unfold, open the air valves, wait until it self inflates, then close the air valves. How easy is that? I will take the bulk of the camp pad and its weight over a sleepless night any day. With that said, I must admit it is heavy and bulky, thus making it great for car camping; not so much for backpacking.
I first reviewed these pads in 2009. At that time I was in love, and bought two more as gifts for friends. While I still love the comfort and size of the pad, I've had to replace each pad at least once due to leaking valves. Now my most recent replacement pad is less than a year old and has developed a number of slow but steady leaks all along one edge of the pad, about two inches in from the seam. I think the materials are flawed and will not stand up to even occasional use. Sadly, I can no longer recommend this pad.
I got this for car camping comfort and it delivers that perfectly. Of course it's heavy and bulky, but I have an ultralight pad as well. This one is warm, comfortable and the surface is soft to the touch. Basically this has become my girlfriend's pad, and I usually use a NeoAir. For car camping, it's almost perfect. I just wish it was a little bit longer. They should make it as 74 inches. I'm 6'1" and I stay on the pad just fine but if I stretch out I hang off a bit. I didn't want to get the large 3.5 inch thick guy though because that thing is too big, even for me.
I used this sleeping pad in Guatemala at the end of January for 3 nights. My bed was a thin board, but I was very comfortable with this pad on top of the board. I sleep on my side, and I had no problems doing that. I let it inflate for about 15 minutes, added 2-3 breaths, and locked the valve. I didn't have to adjust it at all during those 3 nights - impressive! To fit it in my suitcase, I did have to fold/roll it differently than the way it came - so it was somewhat bulky. But I slept as well on it as I do on my own mattress at home. Thank you REI!
Bought this to replace a cot I had. Wasn't to sure about how comfortable sleeping on the ground was going to be, but was I surprised! The pad quickly inflates and I also added in a few extra puffs by mouth to get the thickness I wanted. I used it with a REI Polar Pod +25 bad and Thermarest pillow. Temps got down to the about 30 degrees and I was very warm and comfortable. I actually didn't even use the pillow the second night because the pad had plenty of thickness and comfort that I didn't even need the pillow. It doesn't roll up tight enough to hike with, but is a solid car camping pad. Two thumbs up!
So I picked up this pad for my car camping trip to the Sierras. I was excited because the 2.5 seemed like a nice blend of air mattress and a basic self-inflating pad. I wasn't excited about the price (paid [$]), but I was looking forward to the comfortable nights. Man was I let down. Honestly, this wasn't any better than the Brand X pad from your Big Box Store. Sure the design was nice and the quality was there, but this pad was not the air mattress-light that I was hoping for. Thankfully, I was able to return for a refund with my REI membership.
